In the interest of shortening what was already going to be a long post I will abbreviate the start of this scene -- Little Judy is riding in the backseat through the dark, through the night, with her asshole father and her wicked stepmother Rosemary in the front seat when the car gets stuck in the mud. They get out and start walking towards the closest house, but because Judy can't keep up -- being, you know, a little girl -- Rosemary comes back and throws Judy's teddy bear into the trees. Because, tale as old as time, that's what wicked stepmothers do. Judy though, she's got quite the vivid imagination! Hit the jump for the rest...

Dolls (1987)

We all love Dolls right? If you haven't seen it I really recommend you do -- it's on Amazon Prime but only until March 31st, so what else ya doing? Yes there's lots of violence but for being graphic it's all somehow goofy and cartoony at the same time -- it's also at the same time, for all its campiness, the only "killer doll" movie I've ever actually found genuinely creepy; I have no idea how director Stuart Gordon juggled all of those things at once, but juggle it he did.

I don't know what we did to deserve getting the fifteen or so delightfully deranged feature films that we got from Gordon in his 72 blessed years here on the earth but I for one think it must've been one of our finer feats -- RIP to that great crazy man this week; we didn't deserve him. In most excellent news for me specifically there are still several of his movies, like Fortress and Edmond and King of the Ants and Robot Jox, that I've never seen -- I might just make one of these quarantine days an effort in playing catch up.

Yesterday in his honor I watched Dolls for the tenth time -- I know Re-Animator is supposed to be everybody's favorite but honestly Dolls is mine; it's both so freaking weird and bonus without any of the fucked-up sex stuff that occasionally made me squirm in the wrong kind of way -- and I watched his 1995 flick Castle Freak (which is on Shudder right now) for the very first time... speaking of fucked-up sex-stuff. Eesh! That said you just kind of have to turn off the "moral" part of your brain watching these things and go along for the fucked-up ride -- you don't watch a movie called Castle Freak expecting a movie your grandmother will love -- so I did, and it was indeed a ride.

I asked that question on Twitter last night but a poll seemed important. I go both ways on him, which is probably what made him such a good match for Gordon -- sexy enough until you get too close and then you kinda wanna run. I say all of this with love. Jeffrey Combs is the man.
