RIP Dolly

Truly -- what am I going to say that we're not all, every single one of us, feeling already? Dolly Parton hes left us at the far too young age of 80, and nobody will ever replace her. She radiated goodness and humor and intelligence -- for years she's felt like the one remaining bridge between everybody. We're all mourning today. Click here and you can donate to her Imagination Library program, which puts books in the hands of kids -- it'd be cool if we can give her life's greatest work a great big boost in her honor. Now if you excuse me I am gonna go listen to her cover of "Stairway To Heaven" (the greatest cover of all time) a dozen times and cry for a bit. And feel free to tell me in the comments what Dolly meant to you.

Everything You Ever Need To Know About Life...

 ... you can learn from:

Steel Magnolias (1989)

Ouiser: I do not see plays, because I can nap at home for free. And I don't see movies 'cause they're trash, and they got nothin' but naked people in 'em! And I don't read books, 'cause if they're any good, they're gonna make 'em into a miniseries.

A happy 91st birthday to the legend Shirley MacLaine!

Josh Segarra Eleven Times

I'm really bad about asking for television screeners, and I'm currently very angry at myself that I didn't get around to doing that for the new season of The Other Two -- god I love that show! Y'all watch it right? It's back on HBO on Thursday -- here is the trailer for the new season. It's the first place I took notice of Josh Segarra here (photographed for Bello magazine) (ETA actually I am wrong about this -- I first took notice of him being all hot and hairy and half-naked in the movie Trainwreck in 2015! I had forgotten about this!) but eventually he was everywhere -- on She-Hulk! Taking his shirt off in Scream movies! Singing with Dolly f'ing Parton! And we're very happy about all of it. No matter what else he does he'll always be Lance from The Other Two to me, though -- a sexy lovable goofball. Even looking at this smile-less photo-shoot I expect him to start giggling at any moment, bless him. He's so endearing. Hit the jump for all the photos...

Oscar Isaac Three Times

I haven't read Oscar's new interview with the New York Times talking his lil' Moon Knight program, have you? If you have or if you click that link and do let me know if it's worth using up one of my free monthly articles on -- I'm not convinced he'll say anything that he hasn't said in one of his ten thousand other interviews over the past several weeks that will justify that, to be honest. Those clicks are like gold! Anyway I would typically now with great enthusiasm bring up his outfit at the Met Gala last night but the whole "Abortion Thing" really kinda dampened my feels re: caring about silly costume theater with the mega-rich prancing about as the world burns to a literal Robber Baron theme. Yeah Oscar looked hot in his dress...

... but am I crazy for thinking that the dress should've been a little shorter? And I'm not just saying this for the obvious reason (that I want to see up Oscar Isaac's dress) -- Oscar is short. And no, I do not mind that fact. But it's a factor in what looks good on him and like with that kilt he wore several months back (although I think the kilt worked better) I think these fashion choices are making him seem smaller than he is? Maybe that's my own height-ism at work honestly, and the idea is to destigmatize Shortness? Or maybe I am overthinking all of this? Or maybe I am just annoyed I haven't seen any photos of his butt yet?

Everything You Ever Need To Know About Life...

 ... you can learn from:

The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982)

Miss Mona: Well I always just thought if you see
somebody without a smile, give 'em yours!

When I say "Happy birthday!" to Miss Dolly Parton I want you to know that if I could scream that "Happy birthday!" so loud it obliterated the solar system it still wouldn't be an ounce of "Happy birthday!" enough. If she wasn't before -- and you couldn't made the case and I'd have bought your case -- now that Betty White has passed on I think Dolly's the official Most Beloved Celebrity in the World? I always hesitate to make proclamations like that because I grew up around and among extremely close-minded Christian-types who would look down on Dolly for her tarted-up look with the cleavage and make-up and you know, the everything. But the same went for Betty White -- these people definitely looked down on The Golden Girls too. So fuck those people. Dolly is the queen of the world!

Read to Me, Dolly

.
You know we're in A Real Place right now because I kind of cried a little bit reading this news meant for children -- Dolly Parton is going to read a children's book to, you know, "children" on YouTube every Thursday night for the next ten weeks. The YouTube channel is at this link here -- it's somewhat promotional in that there's a documentary about her famed Imagination Library, which has been donating millions of books to kids since 1995, that was scheduled to come out in April and which has just been moved back, release-date-wise to September. The doc is called The Library That Dolly Built and the trailer's down at the bottom of this post.

I don't know about you but there seems to be only one thing in this world that every person can agree on and that is Dolly Parton, and the thought of her reading a bedtime story to me once a week in these trying damn times is like the warmest blanket I've ever imagined; hence the tears. I will be there anyway, and I think y'all should join us. This becoming a thing sounds like the first actual sense of comfort I've felt in three weeks. Dolly is magic.

Good Morning, World

.
.
Yes I know that Luke Evans has had an album out for a few weeks now, and I also know that I haven't said a word about it here at MNPP... well I'll let Olympia Dukakis do the talking for me...
.
.
(In all seriousness I haven't listened to a whisper of it, I know
what my likes are and this would only come between us.)

Good Morning, World

.
I know in theory there is pleasure to be had from cornball comfort-food television but man alive, and I say this with all the love in the world for Dolly Parton in my heart, her Heartstrings program on Netflix nearly busted my saccharine-meter. Picture all those little smoking wheels and springs going "yoing yoing yoing" out of it like a cartoon clock on overdrive and that was me, with this show. Granted I only managed to watch one and a half episodes, including obviously the one that starred my beloved Colin O'Donoghue...

... as a pond-prone bad-boy cowpoke called "J.J. Sneed" after Dolly's 1970 song. Did anybody watch this episode, or any of Heartstrings? I know some of you people watched Heartstrings. I heard there's a gay episode -- should I watch it? Or should I just stick with staring at all of these gifs of my beloved Colin O'Donoghue giving us the rest of his PG-rated skinny-dip (also known as "his best on-screen shirtlessness to date" if you can believe it) after the jump...

Good Morning, World

.
Today would've been Burt Reynolds' 83rd birthday had he not passed last September so I figured a little him and Dolly (who I gather was just honored for being "The Greatest Person Living" at the Grammys last night -- I didn't watch; how was it?) in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas being charming folks would give this dreary-in-NYC Monday morning a little perk. Miss ya, Burt! And let's get Dolly in another movie already.

The Emmys That Weren't

.
I had a friend's birthday party yo attend last night so I wasn't able to watch the Emmys -- somebody tell me the most important things I missed so I can seek them out, please. What happened? I know that Laura Dern won but I am waiting to watch her speech until the Internet dubs her so it sounds like she says "Enlightened" instead of "Big Little Lies." Also I think I might be bad luck now because so many awesome people won last night - maybe we watching awards shows is a jinx? In summation, here's some extra gay:

I Am Link

.
--- Fun Fact: I still have never even sat through the entirety of the original Grease from start to finish. So I definitely have never sat through the entirety of Grease 2. But I enjoyed the heck out of reading Nat talk about the latter in his ongoing celebration of all things Michelle Pfeiffer today at The Film Experience. In random asides he brought up a couple of my most cherish pop culture memories - the two men in bed scene from thirtysomething (which is the first gay thing I ever remember seeing) and Maxwell Caulfield, because swoon.

--- Brown Football Helmet - This year marks the 30th anniversary of the play Steel Magnolias debuting here in New York, and there's an oral history of the whole thing, from original inspiration up through the big movie-star movie, right over here that I highly recommend if you're an enamored with it as I am. There are tons of great details about the film's shoot on location in Louisiana especially; loved the bit about the Dukakis signs, and of course the reminders that Dolly Parton is the nicest gal on Earth:

"We were shooting part of the Christmas scene, and this was in the dead of August, and we were sitting out on the porch of Truvy’s beauty shop. We were waiting, and there was a lot of stop and start. The women were dressed for Christmas, and Dolly was sitting on the swing. She had on that white cashmere sweater with the marabou around the neck, and she was just swinging, cool as a cucumber. Julia said, “Dolly, we’re dying and you never say a word. Why don’t you let loose?” Dolly very serenely smiled and said, “When I was young and had nothing, I wanted to be rich and famous, and now I am. So I’m not going to complain about anything.”

---  After Life - Somebody yell at me about writing up my thoughts on Life, the sci-fi movie with Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds, please; while I wait for that here's word that Jake is re-teaming with Life's director Daniel Espinoza on a movie called The Anarchists vs. ISIS, which is based on a Rolling Stone article about the true story of "a ragtag team of American volunteers, socialists and outcasts who are fighting alongside the Kurdish militia known as the YPG to beat ISIS in Syria and establish an anarchist collective amid the rubble of war." You can read the original article right here. Or just wait for Jake's pretty face to make it all more palatable, whatever.

--- Earn the Dern - As Big Little Lies finishes up its stellar season and as we wait for Twin Peaks to start in a few weeks Laura Dern's got to find something to do, and she's having no trouble at all, thankfully - she's going to play the lead in Justin "King Cobra" Kelly's movie about phony hipster author JT Leroy, for one. That will co-star Kristen Stewart. And then, because she likes nothing more than mixing shit up she's going to co-star opposite Liam Neeson in another one of his revenge thrillers; she's playing "the wife" (god I hope it's more than that) in Hard Powder, which has Neeson chasing down the drug cartel that murdered his son.

--- But Speaking of Big Little Lies  I hate that people are even asking the question whether that wooden plank Alexander Skarsgard swung around on this week's episode was really his dick or not - if you have to ask that question you have never seen a penis in your life. If you want to see pictures of the fake fake thing click here (link NSFW not for the fake penis but for actual real gay pornography on the sidebars) but I'm not polluting up MNPP with that phony filth. Go real or go home, Alex! (My home, I mean.)

--- There & Here - And let's talk about a different Shirley Maclaine movie now! I got a bit pissy regarding somebody else's thoughts on Hal Ashby's masterpiece Being There on Twitter the other day, so In was glad to read Mark Harris' piece on the film for the new Criterion release, which is more in line with how I read the film. Choice bit:

"Being There asserts itself as a parable about innocence, cynicism, and limitless credulity. We invest people with unspeakable power by reinventing them as reflections of our hopes and our vanities, and it is thus terrifyingly possible for us to endow a complete imbecile who watches TV all day with qualities he has never possessed. This idea will never go out of style; as a cautionary tale, Being There is elastic enough to feel as if it is perpetually about our moment, as long as our moment includes campaigns, elections, and politicians."

---  Hot Potatoes - All of the headlines about Mike Newell's new movie (with the cumbersome title of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, which is after a book I am told) are grabbing onto the grab-bag of Downton Abbey actors he's cast in it, but clearly the more important story is the word that it will have a heatwave of dude hotness in the triumvirate of Michiel Huisman, Glen Powell, and Matthew Goode sharing the screen. Somebody get me onto that set, please!

--- And Finally I haven't had a chance to read this one yet but The Guardian chatted with actress Hanna Schygulla about her work with Rainer Werner Fassbinder earlier this week (thx Mac) - I guess they're doing a whole retrospective on the director at the British Film Institute this month, which she'll be taking part in. Also I cant remember if I mentioned this previously but RWF's 1972 TV series Eight Hours Don't Make a Day is being re-released and should play the US sometime this year. That's probably my number one cannot miss event of 2017 (besides Trump's impeachment and arrest, of course).

Do Dump or Marry - The Ladies Of Consolidated

.

In honor of Dolly Parton's 66th birthday today - happy birthday Dolly! - I ask you to look back upon the classic silly 1980 comedy Nine to Five for our first all female edition of Do Dump or Marry. I figure Dolly and Lily and Jane are the movie itself are all gay enough to overcome any funny feelings their lady business might inspire.

This query involves their characters - the mousy newcomer Judy (played by Jane Fonda), the manic yet efficient Violet (played by Lily Tomlin) and the busty and bubbly Doralee (played by Dolly). Which would you drop the pencil in your office for some afternoon delight with, which would you give their pink slip, and which would you chain up in an elaborate system of cords and pulleys to keep  forever?

Hit the comments with your answers!

Every Last Inch Of Him's Covered With Hair

.
Photobucket

Hello, most prominent reason to see Beauty and the Beast in 3D this weekend! Can you imagine? It'll be like motorboating Gaston at last! A dream fulfilled.

My first piece for Celebrity Beehive in this here new year can be read right over yonder. There you can see what I have to say about Contraband with Marky Mark and Joyful Noise with Dolly and Queen Latifah, amongst other seeming cinematic travesties. Have at it.

I Am Link

.
--- Martian Man - Some more pictures from Pixar's John Carter of Mars movie hit the internet over the long weekend, and they give us a lil' more Taylor Kitsch beefcake to sink our teeth into. Not to mention Woola! All hail Woola.

--- Wiggin' Out - This is a week old but I never got around to linking - Glenn got to see Dolly Parton in concert, and it's just as splendid as you'd think. Bless her.

--- Foxy Lady - MNPP bud Jarett got to talk to the gal playing Foxface in The Hunger Games on a red carpet, and here is what she had to say about that. The movie, I mean.

--- Foster Cares - Over at The Film Experience Nat interviewed Ben Foster and he's about as reluctant an interview subject as you'd suppose him to be, but Nat gets some good stuff out of him. He's a big Melancholia fan, which I've been jonesing to see again something bad. I don't know if I'd be able to resist asking him to trot out his Freaks and Geeks character, and I don't think that would go over well.

--- In Or Out - This is non-news, but Colin Firth's confirmed sort of that he's considering the role of antagonist in Spike Lee's Oldboy movie, against Josh Brolin. But he hasn't made up his mind, or something.

--- Chopped - I can't even believe somebody even bothered to think through it enough to think that remaking the delightfully horrible but very very very much of its time Chopping Mall is a good idea. And they're not even keeping the robots! I mean, what's the point?

--- Oh Boy Byzantium - Neil Jordan is making a vampire movie starring Saoirse Ronan? Plus cutie Sam Riley? I am there.

--- Vagabond Shoes - I'm sure we'll be seeing dozens of these everywhere for the next couple of weeks as the film gets released, but for now here's a nice chat with Shame director Steve McQueen and Shame star Michael Fassbender over at AICN. I like the bit about Carey's "New York New York" moment. I'm dying to see the movie a second time.

--- Daisy Chains - And speaking of Carey Mulligan, here she is talking about being nervous herself to play an iconic character like Daisy Buchanan in Baz Luhrmann's Great Gatsby movie. I love her and I have high hopes for her performance, but she's right to be nervous about it. People have their knives out already.

--- Suited Up - Christopher Nolan finished shooting The Dark Knight Rises last week and THR got some words from Batman himself Christian Bale about hanging up the rubber suit. That's nice and all but what I'm noticing is how hot he's looking in the suit there. Have they done some alterations? Some sexy alterations? because I don't remember him looking that good in it before. It doesn't even need nipples.

--- And finally, Poltergeist II made Post-Mortem Depression angry. Very angry. Find out how angry at this link. It is a terrible movie (and not terrible-awesome like the third one), but I give it a lot of leeway for Kane and the tequila worm business which grossed/freaked me out as a kid hardcore.

Lunchtime Music Break

If only it were Neko Case and Dolly Parton, I might explode.

I Am Link

.
--- Slow Show - I'm having one of those days where everything I read is making me angry. Take this tag-team take-down by the NY Times critics of a recent piece in the New York Times Magazine about how that writer can't stomach "slow" movies anymore. I agree with most everything Dargis and Scott have to say in rebuttal to this ridiculousness - although I got a little eye-rolly at Scott's insistence on bringing The Tree of Life into it, til he allowed for some wiggle-room for those of us that found that film ponderous for other reasons - but mostly it just made me nuts that the original article even got published in the first place. I get enough of a defense of intellectual laziness from our politicians, thanks very much. I thought I'd be safe amongst art critics. Shame is a lost art in this world.

--- Speaking of everything I just wrote, Slash rounded up a batch of "first impressions" of Green Lantern from Twitter, and I'm ashamed that I wasted my time reading them. Blake Lively is so hot with her brown hair 3D rules verbal barf kill me now!!!

--- Mutant X'd - Over at io9 they're offering a few reasons why X-Men Muppet Babies underperformed a little bit box-office-wise, including it's Michael Fassbender's fault for not being Hugh Jackman, and then  the first comment uses the word "funnest." I am just gonna throw myself off a cliff and be done with it. I have no patience for anything today.

--- Lil' Wizards - Okay, here's a palate cleanser via PopWrap - the first screen-test of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint before the very first Harry Potter movie. Awwwww.

--- Fun Fact of the Day - I didn't know that the background sound in Dolly Parton's "9 to 5" song was her tapping her fake nails on a counter-top! Learn all that and more over at Low Resolution where Joe and Mark are taking on the Best Song category at the 1980 Oscars.

--- And ending on a happy note, here's some behind-the-scenes footage from Ghostbusters 2. Slimer puppetry ho! (via)

Good Morning, World

.

.

Here's some worthwhile advice from your old pal JA to you. If you like to smile, you should set this song as your alarm to wake you up every morning. It's a cure for the smile-killers. Smiles all day long!
