Last Man Coming Like Really Coming

After 15 years of posting about the possibility it still seems utterly impossible to me that an actual honest-to-blog television series adaptation of Brian K. Vaughn's comic Y: The Last Man has been finally shot, edited, and finished, and will be premiering on FX on Hulu come a month from now (September 13th to be precise) -- but they have the receipts, proof, and all that jazz in the form of footage they have been sharing, so what am I to think? An elaborate deep-fake perhaps? This is a cosmic joke being played on me alone? Or it's just a show, premiering on FX on Hulu on September 13th. Lots of different people are saying lots of different things, the truth could lie anyway, man. (I guess I'll find out this weekend since I got screeners of the show this week, holy shit.) From Yellowjackets To Yorick We Go

I have to big important and exciting trailers to share with you and you today! Above is the first (clearly), for the forthcoming Showtime series called Yellowjackets. What is Yellowjackets, you ask? I am glad you asked, here's what Yellowjackets is -- Yellowjackets is a series that stars Melanie Lynskey, Juliette Lewis, and Christina Ricci, with a pilot directed by Karyn Kusama. What, you need other information? Fuck your other information. Watch the trailer, that'll give you your precious "other information" -- me, I know what I need to know to rearrange my entire life around that thing, thank you very much. Yellowjackets premieres on Showtime sometime this fall.

And then we have the first trailer for the long and I do mean long gestating Y: The Last Man adaptation, which I have been documenting basically since I began posting on this site 15 years ago. (Chart all of our coverage at this link.) It's been some time in the making! It was supposed to be a movie, or two, at one point -- it almost got made with Shia LaBeouf. But now, eighteen years after comics writer Brian K. Vaughn first introduced Yorick Brown, the sexy regular-guy last male on Earth after a plague wiped out all of the menfolk leaving a world of pissed-off and free women to pick up the pieces, we've got an FX series. And it premieres soon! On September 12th! I gotta go see about screeners, yo.

Good Morning, Gratuitous Ben Schnetzer

It looks like the wonderful 2014 film Pride might be turning itself into one of those American-Graffiti-style generational texts that we look back at from the future and say, "Oh I didn't know all these people were in that one before they were somebody!" It's already given us Hot Priest Andrew Scott and Preacher's Joseph Gilgun (yes yes they were in things before but whatever) not to mention Mr. George Mackay, but here today comes Ben Schnetzer, snatching up some attention this morning. I don't know how I totally spaced on posting this news from February (thx Mac) but Ben here got himself cast as Yorick in the long suffering TV adaptation of one of my favorite graphic novels, Y: The Last Man. Let's hear it for Ben!

I don't have it in me to go into Y: The Last Man's eternal in-the-making story this morning, you can skim back through our archives for that -- just know that the last we'd heard our boy Barry Keoghan had ditched the project, and Schnetzer here is replacing him. I thought Barry was a weird but inspired choice for the role -- Schnetzer seems a little safer? But that's okay. I have nothing against Ben here, and he looks more like Yorick as he was drawn...

... than Barry ever did. I am open to this -- I am open to anything when it comes to this show, because I am so very tired of waiting for it to happen. That said after all this time they best not fuck it up! If you're unaware Y:The Last Man is a about a plague (heh) that kills all the world's men except one, Yorick Brown, leaving him alone on a planet full of women. It does not at all play out like the frat-boy fantasy that description might sound like at first blush -- it's complicated and dark and terrific. You should read the series if you have not! MNPP approved!

Anyway back to Ben here. Besides Pride you might recognize him from the TV program Happy Town (I never watched that) or the movies Goat (speaking of frat-boys), The Riot Club, Snowden, Warcraft... oh and I guess he's in Xavier Dolan's The Death and Life of John F. Donovan...

And it would seem that the movie Pride got him the attention of a few gay directors -- besides Dolan he also did a photo-shoot for Numero magazine last November alongside the actor Will Poulter that was photographed by no less than one Mr. Luca Guadagnino...

... of which I'll share more below. Still I like to think of this Euro Pink Mafia pushing around these names -- Xavier and Luca sitting on the phone, twirling the long twisty phone cords that no longer exist but exist in my imagining of this scenario, getting giddy about the boys of Pride. (Oh Luca should certainly work with Andrew Scott.) Anyway I digress, I always digress. I was reminded of Ben Schnetzer's casting as Yorick this week because this week came word that the show will air on FX on Hulu and not just regular FX. And here we are. Posting some pictures! Wolf Boy Becomes Wolf Man

1917 star George Mackay, aka the cream that rose to the top of this past awards season -- that works in the sense that he's a terrific actor finally getting some attention after several years of great work and in the sense that dude is real pasty -- has just lined up a new gig, and it sounds possibly pretty interesting. He's going to star in Wolf, playing a young man who has "species dysphoria" and actually thinks he's a wolf. (So basically he's playing Sheila the She-Wolf on GLOW.) His family sends him to a clinic for brain treatment, as one does, and there he meets a young lady (to be played by Lily-Rose Depp) who thinks herself a wildcat. One assumes an interspecies romance then ensues.

What this actually most reminds me of is Park Chan-wook's criminally under-rated 2006 romance I'm a Cyborg But That's OK, which had the singer Rain romancing Soo-jung Lim, who believes herself to be half-robot and has elaborate fantasies -- or are they? -- where her mechanics take over at great moments of stress and the like. The tension between one person's belief in another and how that feeds the increasingly dangerous fantasies becomes, in Park's hands, the perfect engine to explore What Love Means. Let's hope it's like that!

On an interesting side-note the original star of this movie was apparently supposed to be our favorite spritely lil' weirdo Barry Keoghan, making this the second project in the past month -- alongside the Y: The Last Man series -- that Barry's either dropped out of or been booted from, not sure which in either case. We're giving him the benefit of the doubt that his big Marvel movie Eternals has swallowed up his time, but if another project drops we might begin to worry. Funnily enough in a weird bit of overlap the director of Wolf is Nathalie Biancheri, whose last movie Nocturnal starred Cosmo Jarvis, aka Barry's co-star (and MNPP crush) in Calm With Horses, which we just posted a trailer for the other day.

The Last Man Is Cursed, Curse The Last Man

Okay first fucking things first how has this photo of my boys Barry Keoghan and Kumail Nanjiani shirtless at the gym escaped my eyeballs for forty-eight straight days? Barry posted it on his Instagram on December 20th! That was in an entirely different decade, yo. Granted that was only a couple of days after Kumail first revealed his big boy Marvel Movie physique (see here) so perhaps this tinier wave to those tidals was lost in their wake, but still. This one makes it gayer with one of my faves! Forty-eight wasted days of my life, damn. 

Barry is co-starring with Kumail (not to mention Richard Madden and Kit Harington) in Eternals, which is set to come out in November -- Barry's playing the character called Druig, cousin to Ikaris (aka Madden's possibly homosexual character), and I think he's kind of a bad guy? His Wiki bio says he likes torturing people, including his cousin -- ooh Barry Keoghan torturing Richard Madden, I could so be into that. 

Blah blah blah I'm not here to talk about a blasted Marvel movie! Funny how they swallow everything up, innit? I'm here to talk about the accursed TV adaptation of Brian K. Vaughn's comic series Y: The Last Man, which just dropped a brand new bomb on us today -- Barry is being booted, and the leading character of Yorick is being recast yet again. Dammit all to heck and back! Barry got cast in the show back in July of 2018 and I was happy about it -- I loved the comics, and I love Barry. Talent meets talent, what's not to be happy about? 

Apparently something. I've been covering the Last Man beat since 2008 and they just cannot get this thing off the ground. They were real close this time -- I think a pilot even got filmed -- and THR says that the latest show-runner Eliza Clark of Animal Kingdom isn't recasting anybody else, everybody else that was on board remains. I don't know if Barry's schedule just got in the way, what with the Marvel Movies and all, or what. All I know is I am sad he won't be my Last Man.

Oscar Isaac To Star In Ex Machina

Is that headline giving you a case of the dreaded deja-vus? But Oscar Isaac already starred in a movie called Ex Machina, I hear you thinking. Wait, is this a sequel? We'd love a sequel, but... well considering how Ex Machina ends, how... is it a prequel? I'd watch a prequel. Anything really to have more...

... of Oscar Isaac with that beard. Well stop thinking goddamnit, it's none of those things. Let me explain! Y: The Last Man writer Brian K. Vaughn also authored a comic series called Ex Machina that had nothing at all to do with the 2014 film that Oscar was in, but Oscar has taken it upon himself to confuse us all by attaching himself, as producer and star, to an adaptation. At least he has the decency to re-name the thing -- the movie will be called The Great Machine. 

"The comic, which Vaughan made with artist Tony Harris, debuted in 2004, running for 50 issues under DC Comics imprint Wildstorm. It centered on Mitchell Hundred, a former superhero who becomes the mayor of New York City after 9/11. Hundred had the power to talk to mechanical devices but the comic was concerned less about superheroics than issues of government and political leadership. Isaac will play Hundred."

As far as I can tell there haven't been any updates on the TV adaptation of Brian K. Vaughn's most beloved by me comic series Y: The Last Man since August, when Vaughn himself reported that things were going well in the writing room with the show's new showrunner. Its not like Yorick-to-be Barry Keoghan doesn't have other stuff on his plate -- he's co-starring in both The Eternals for Marvel and David Lowery's Green Knight, an adaptation of the Gawain story of yore, alongside Dev Patel. But I'm still gonna check back in on this project every couple of months, other projects be damned -- it at least gives me an excuse to root through Barry's Instagram for recent thirst traps.

Finally an update on what's happening with Y, FX's televisual adaptation of my beloved Y: The Last Man comics series that's supposed to star my beloved Barry Keoghan as Yorick, the last man on Earth -- the last we heard back in April the show-runners Michael Green and Aida Croal has split due to "creative differences" or whatever; well today comes word that Eliza Clark, a writer and producer on Animal Kingdom and The Killing, has taken over. Sounds great! Can we just get moving then? It's not like I haven't watched this property move through about five thousand different sets of hands over the years or anything. Well at least this new news got me to look over at Barry's Instagram where I've missed some stuff, let's hit the jump for a couple picks including that one of him and Lucas Hedges up top and then this shot of today's mood below...

It Takes So Long To Get To Y

Being a Y: The Last Man fan is so damned stressful! I've been waiting for Brian K. Vaughn's graphic novel masterpiece to be adapted onto some sort of screen, be it big or small, for over a decade now and it's been nothing but ups and downs and downs and ups, and just when I thought that FX had figured it out shooting their pilot with Barry Keoghan and Diane Lane in the leads and American Gods writer Michael Green, poof, more trouble -- Green and his co-producer Aida Mashaka Croal (Luke Cage) announced on Twitter last night that they were exiting the show, saying "FX has decided not to move forward with our series in its current form.” That said FX told Variety they're "still planning to move forward with the series with its current cast" so all's not lost, it's not entirely back to the drawing board. Still I wish they could get this together! It's been so long since I read the books my old man memory has faded everything down to dullness.

Just about two weeks back I told y'all that Dev Patel is going to star in an adaptation of the legendary action poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight for A Ghost Story director David Lowery -- well today comes word of two more names joining the cast and they're good ones! Our boy Barry Keoghan of Dunkirk and The Killing of a Sacred Deer fame -- not to mention his about-to-be leading-man role in our decades-in-the-making obsession Y: The Last Man -- is one, and Ralph Ineson, best known for his booming baritone playing the creepy father in The Witch, is the other. No word on who they're playing but these are some world-building faces, they are.

11 years ago in 2008 when I posted my first post on Brian K. Vaughn's magnificent graphic novel Y: The Last Man getting turned into a movie (which then was set to star Shia LaBeouf) the actor Barry Keoghan was 15 years old. He wouldn't even act in anything for three more years. And here we are and it's 2019 and Barry is going to star in a Y: The Last Man series for FX -- titled simply Y -- what a world, y'all. We already knew Barry had been cast last summer, but last night came word that FX is moving ahead with the series, which means we're actually going to see this thing! It's had more failed starts than Jack Nicholson's ED Medication, so this is something... 

... to celebrate! With some naked Barry, obviously. Nudity is important, after all! Not just for prurient reasons (although we like them reasons just fine) but because penis is a plot point in Y: The Last Man and we need an un-shy actor. They found one. Barry Keoghan is Your Yorick, Yours & Mine

Barry Keoghan gave last year's greatest performance not given by a person named Timothée Chalamet in Yorgos Lanthimos' The Killing of a Sacred Deer, and we've been smitten ever since - hell he even makes us look back at Dunkirk askance and we fucking hated Dunkirk. So needless to say when I read this afternoon's news that Barry's been cast as Yorick Brown, the lead in the forthcoming Y: The Last Man series -- a series I have been covering every up and down in production for almost exactly a decade (seriously my first post, titled "Shia's Pecker Is Of Dire Importance" was in July of 2008!) -- well, I met the news with a buoyant jig. A jig, people!

Don't look at me like that, Barry. Anyway after going through several iterations the Y: The Last Man series (which started as a comic book written by Brian K. Vaughn that I deeply recommend) is now being shepherded to FX by Michael Green, aka the dude who gave us the first season of American Gods alongside Bryan Fuller. Of course making a pilot isn't the same as going to series, so they've got to film this thing first. But Barry is a big heck-yes in the right direction.

Other names have been cast too, including Diane Lane as Yorick's mother and Imogen Poots as his sister - you can read through them all here (Thanks Mac). A couple of weeks ago there was a rumor that Jodie Foster was going to play the major character of "Dr. Allison Mann" but that casting hasn't been officially announced yet so we'll have to see if the rumor's true. For now though we're just gonna keep jigging over our boy Barry. Most excellent!

--- The Last Woman - Granted it's been several years since I have re-read Brian K. Vaughn's glorious comic series Y: The Last Man - a series I can't recommend highly enough to y'all, by the way; I have been blathering on about it ever since, after all - but I have no recollection of ever thinking to myself when the series was fresh in my mind that the role of Yorick's mother would be a hot ticket for a big name when they got around to casting the thing... and yet here we are and there's a rumor going around that the first person attached to the series is no less than Jodie Foster to play Yorick's mom. I mean, great! Jodie is great! Silence of the Lambs is my jam! I'm just wracking my brain to remember the importance of Yorick's Mom and wondering how this might skew the focus of the show, is all.

--- Robot Mama - Shooting has begun on the new Terminator movie, which is being directed by Deadpool's Tim Miller and is being billed as the real official sequel to James Cameron's T2, aka we should forget all those crappy sequels (sorry but you'll have to hold me down and lobotomize Jai Courtney's Almost Naked Scene out of me), and holy shit-balls it's a thrill to see Linda Hamilton playing Sarah Connor again. --- Fantastic Beasts - About a month ago I told y'all about Lovecraft Country, a horror series being produced by Jordan Peele that's basically giving the Old Ones inventor the anthology treatment. It's based on a 2016 book by Matt Ruff that I have not read. Anyway I guess Peele's involvement is enough to get some awesome and exciting names involved cast-wise, including most enticingly drumroll please Elizabeth Debicki! Elizabeth Debicki versus Cthulhu! Elizabeth Debicki could totally kick Cthulhu's ass, you guys.

--- Grand High Excuse Me - For some reason Hollywood has decided to make a new movie version of Roald Dahl's classic book The Witches when we've already got Nicholas Roeg's practically perfect 1990 version with Angelica Huston - don't ask me. But they are getting Robert Zemeckis to direct it, it looks like, and that's not a bad idea if they have to do this. Zemeckis has had a few years of not-quite-up-to-snuffs but this seems like a possibly good match.I don't know. I don't really let myself get too worked up about remakes anymore - the originals still exist for us to watch. So the question turns to - who would you cast as The Grand High Witch?

--- Hulk Out - You might've already read this since it was making the rounds pretty hard yesterday but Vulture's piece ranking the Marvel Movies by gayness is high hysterical work by good ol' Kyle Buchanan - I laughed mightily and long. I had a hard time picking just one favorite bit but then I realized something even more important...

--- You Shall Not Pass - There's a documentary about Ian McKellen called McKellen: Playing the Part that's making the rounds starting this week - you can see if it's playing anywhere near you right here - and our pal Nathaniel got to chat with the doc's director for Towleroad, read the interview right here. I saw the doc earlier this week and it's worth checking out if you're a fan of the actor - it reminded me first and foremost what an incredibly brave move it was for him to come out  thirty whole years ago in 1988. Just wow.

--- Tab Up - Last week we heard that the real-world 1950s closeted romance between actors Tab Hunter and Anthony Perkins was getting turned into a movie - this week Attitude caught up with Tab himself and got some good quotes from him on that romance and what we should probably expect from the movie, biographically speaking. It's pretty much like I said - this was not a great romance; I hope the movie stays true to the difficulty of what the two had, even just personality-wise, because that seems more interesting to me than some rose-colored version. --- And Finally it's been a very long time since I've done one of these link round-up posts so this news is weeks old, but I can no longer allow MNPP to exist without this news-story written somewhere upon it - Brian De Palma's next movie is going to be a fictionalized and no doubt controversial version of the whole Harvey Weinstein Horror Show. I can't even entirely wrap my head around what that movie will be, but I have already bought my tickets to opening night. In related news and worth reading is BD's recent editorial about how Dressed To Kill is the ultimate American Giallo, which I agree with one thousand percent.

The Single Man March

Years and years and years I've been following the development of Bryan Vaughn's comic series Y: The Last Man from page to possible small or big screen iteration - remember when the dude who made that Shia LaBeouf movie almost made this into a Shia LaBeouf movie? Heady days, heady days. The last thing we'd heard was over a year ago - that FX wanted to turn it into a series. 

Well it took some time but they've picked a show-runner and guessing by the company he keeps he must be a fine fellow - Michael Green, who is the co-show-runner on American Gods alongside our beloved Bryan Fuller, is taking over. Green's previously worked on Smallville and Heroes amongst many other shows - he's also the screenwriter of the upcoming Blade Runner, Alien; Covenant, and Wolverine sequels, so dude is really raking it in right about now.

Y: The Last Man tells the story of Yorick Brown, slacker turned last man on Earth - "last man" as in "all of the males of the species drop dead and he's stuck on Earth with just the women." Reading the book I was always glad for him that he was a heterosexual, poor Yorick, because as much as I love my lady-friends I don't know how I'd go on without any other dudes around. Anyway once again here is where I say Logan Lerman should totally play Yorick - it's taken so long to get this thing made he's finally gotten to be the right age, even!

I Love The Last Man

I used to write with so much anguish when the possibility of the wonderful comic-series Y: The Last Man being turned into a movie starring Shia LaBeouf came up -- and it came up often for a few years -- but here we are and it's 2015 and I really don't hate Shia anymore, now that he's revealed himself to be a total mess and endeared himself to my crazy-person-loving ass. Oh he's not right for the role of Yorick Brown, last man on Earth; he's even less right now than he was all those years back. But I figured I'll illustrate this post with him & Yorick as a little olive branch to the past. But nobody go getting any old ideas! 

That was a lot of rambling to get to our point -- Slash is reporting that there's now, finally, talk of turning the comic-series into a TV series for FX. I can't believe it took them this long. The story begs for a longer form. But that said, the story does NOT beg for an infinite form - the books are finite, with a terrific ending, and I wouldn't want them to drag it out past what they have to say either. The Walking Dead comics are still going strong so that show can run on forever, but this ain't The Walking Dead. (It is so much better than The Walking Dead, you guys.) I also worry whether Will Forte's very funny comedy series The Last Man on Earth has stolen some of the book's thunder -- it actually has literally stolen some bits from the comics. (Hello, space astronaut.) Anyway as for casting I still think Logan Lerman would be great; he's actually finally getting to the proper age for Yorick too...

--- Miss You Miss Collette - The first image of Drew Barrymore and Toni Collette in Catherine Hardwicke's Miss You Already (which I previously went on about the casting of Dominic Cooper in right here) isn't exactly the quickest way to my heart - it makes the film look like some mid-2000s forgotten rom-com about gal pals and their sassy problems, and hell, maybe that's what the movie will be. But I will see it because Toni Collette is forever.

--- Ding Dong The Man is Dead - Slash followed up with the screenwriter who was tackling the Y: The Last Man adaptation on a tweet he sent out this week calling the project dead, and sure enough, it's dead. The rights have reverted to Brian K. Vaughn and there they sit until who knows what. Well at least we never had the indignity of Shia playing my beloved Yorick.

--- Pressing Vice - In today's edition of "setting this aside to read at lunchtime" here's a nice big chat with Paul Thomas Anderson in The New York Times (thanks Mac), talking about his Pynchon adaptation Inherent Vice, which is screening at The New York Film Fest next week. Can't wait!

--- Have Pride - I wish I had gone to see one of the thousand press screenings of Pride I was invited to, it sounds like fun in a very specific throwback to "90s import comedy" way, and I know there's no way I'll ever get my boyfriend to go see it (not his cuppa) - for one of the opinions that got me jazzed about the film, here read what Nathaniel said at The Film Experience.

--- New Detectives - I haven't checked today, maybe they have officially announced it by now, but apparently Rachel McAdams and Taylor Kitsch are any-second-official as the other pair of cops in the second season of True Detective, who'll be joining Colin Farrell (hooray) and Vince Vaughn (boo). Vaughn is playing a criminal who is involved in the big investigation, so I guess he'll be channeling his prissy walk in Psycho, or whatever. I did like him circa the Psycho remake, maybe we can go back in time... (doubt it). As for McAdams, sure why not.

--- Rogue Cut - Some more details on the extended cut of X-Men:Days of Future Fourgy have dropped, read about it at The Playlist - I guess it's ten more minutes of footage, and it'll have a bunch of Anna Paquin as Rogue, who was all-but-cut from the original version. And here I was hoping it would be ten more minutes of Hugh Jackman walking around that room naked, silly me.

--- Peculiar Boy - I'm only surprised it's taken Tim Burton this long to get hold of giant-eyed pale boy Asa Butterfield for a movie - the Hugo star will play the lead role in Burton's next movie, an adaptation of the book Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, which already has cast our beloved Eva Green as the titular Miss Peregrine.

--- Civil Lady - I very much enjoyed the "Michael Fassbender's giant (not-that-one) head" movie Frank (here's that review) so I am looking forward to what director Lenny Abrahamson comes up with next and hey, look, news - he's going to make a movie out of Laird Hunt's new book Neverhome, which is about a Civil War-era farmer's wife who leaves her husband and transforms herself into a Union soldier. Anybody read it? It sounds like a super-role for the right actress.

--- Life After Enemy - We just told you about The 9th Life of Louis Drax earlier this week when Jamie Dornan and Aaron Paul were cast - Alexandre Aja is directing the script which is from actor Max Minghella. Anyway a new face has joined the cast, one we like quite a bit - Sarah Gadon, Cronenberg muse slash pregnant lady opposite Jake Gyllenhaal in Enemy. She's great.

--- And finally, have you seen these IBM commercials starring Dominic Cooper? (again thanks Mac) I think you'll forgive me for thinking the dirtiest thoughts regarding computer technology while watching them since that scene in Halt and Catch Fire where Lee Pace randomly mounted that dude, but come on, look at the way those chefs are about to ravage him.

--- Raptor Rap - I have a ton of old news stories to plos through so let's get this going! A bunch of people got cast in the new Jurassic Park movie - the names we care about are Judy Greer, because Judy Greer is awesome, and Jake Johnson from New Girl, because we saw Drinking Buddies a few weeks ago and he wears the hell out of a beard. We really must insist that his role calls for a beard.

--- Dook Dook Dook - Some people worth reading caught up with The Babadook, the horror movie I was raving about before I left on my vacation - here's Rich's take on it over at Gawker (along with a chat with its director Jennifer Kent) and here's Michael taking it on over at Serious Film.

--- Skin Tight - You should only click on over and read this if you've seen the second Captain America movie but over at Buzzfeed our pal Jarett caught up with some of the film's actors on what the events of that movie mean for the future of the Marvel universe and got some small tidbits worth perusing, my favorite of which is this response from Anthony Mackie:

"I know Falcon’s suit is going to evolve and I’m hoping it evolves into red spandex. I’ve been working really hard on my body and was very disappointed when I didn’t get a copious amount of spandex to wear while shooting this movie."

--- Met And Gret - I don't watch How I Met Your Mother (I guess that should be past-tense now) so I missed out on all the hullabaloo on the finale but here's Greta Gerwig talking about it (you should recall she's making the psuedo spin-off series) and being adorable as usual.

--- Adventure Tom - Tom Hardy is reuniting with his Locke director Steven Knight on an eight-episode series for the BBC called Taboo, which is about a dude seeking adventure and trade in early 19th Century Africa. I hope it involves lots of tight Indiana-Jones-ish pants and sweat. He's also taking on a small role in a musical called London Road.

--- Y Never - The guy who was finally going to turn Y: The Last Man into a movie is not going to turn Y: The Last Man into a movie anymore, he's got some other movie set to make. Sigh.

--- Work of Art - Ryan Reynolds is still working on revamping himself as an actor and not just an ab-tor (ugh sorry) - he's taking over a role that Andrew Garfield apparently had to drop out of; Simon Curtis, who made My Week With Marilyn is directing and he's opposite Helen Mirren and Daniel Bruhl in a story about a woman who fought Austria over some stolen Klimt paintings after WWII.

--- Post Queer - At this point everybody already got their say in about James Franco signing on to play an "ex-gay" (I refuse not to put that term in quotation marks) activist for Gus Van Sant, so I'll just say yup that's a thing. Tonally I am hoping for a farce a la The Informant! here. But then lots more movies should aim for The Informant! don't you think?

--- Doom Sayer - Toby Kebbell, who was in Prince of Persia ha ha, has landed the role of Dr. Doom in the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot. Sure he was also in stuff like War Horse and The East, that's what they keep playing up, but he was totally all over Prince of Persia yo.

--- Feminine Wiles - Enemy and Prisoners Director Denis Villenuve is abandoning his boyfriend Jake Gyllenhaal to make lady movies from now on - he wants to make The Story of Your Life starring Amy Adams as a linguist communicating with an alien spaceship (mkay) and he wants to make Sicaro, which sounds like No Country For Old Men with Emily Blunt in the lead, with Benicio Del Toro being all Benio-Del-Toro-ish on the side.

- Stirred Up - How great would it be if Chiwetel Ejiofor is the bad guy in the new James Bond movie?!? I love this idea. He's already proven himself more than capable at playing sinister as hell with Serenity. Plus he and Daniel Craig could make out too, I wouldn't mind that.

--- Guess Who's Coming - Eli Roth hasn't really ever made a movie with a big movie star yet so this news surprised me - Keanu Reeves has signed on for the lead in Knock Knock, his upcoming home-invasion-ish thriller. It sounds kind of like The Strangers if The Strangers had been two hot girls without masks on. Or maybe it doesn't sound like that at all, I don't know, that's what I'm picturing for some reason.
