Hello, Sydney... Again? Again

The trailer and poster for Scream 7 -- I guess they're just calling it that? Okay -- dropped this morning and here I am, sharing it with you. Now normally I tell y'all I don't watch trailers and I especially don't watch horror movie trailers because they always give away too much. But I couldn't help myself today so I actually watched this trailer. I was too curious, given the mangled-up route this one took to making (what with half of the reboot actors peacing-out), along with those bizarre casting announcements -- Matthew Lillard??? I couldn't help myself. But this trailer is extremely straightforward -- Sidney Prescott and her daughter are hunted by a Ghostface, the end. I feel as if Kevin Williamson (who wrote AND directed this one) has to have more up his sleeve than this -- right? But I guess we'll have to wait until February to find out. Watch:

Scream 7 drops on February 27th.
(I'm going to form a prayer circle that they shock us all
and Melissa Berrera & Jenna Ortega are the killers.)
(Or Parker Posey. Justice for Jennifer Jolie!)

Good Morning, World

I watched Richard Linklater's SubUrbia for the first time last night and -- unlike most Linklater movies -- I liked it. I wrote a little on Letterboxd if you care. Anyway the above moment with Parker Posey is obviously the take-away, and I will cherish it. Moving on to "back to life, back to reality" -- The second week of NYFF press screenings has begun and I'm only here at my desk for about an hour before running off to that, so cherish these brief moments while you've got them. Hope everyone had a nice weekend -- if you watched anything interesting tell me about it in the comments.

Parker Posey Island Hop

The cast for In Bruges and Banshees of Inisherin writer-director Martin McDonagh's next movie is shaping up and it's a good one -- this past week Parker Posey and Steve Buscemi both joined the already-cast Sam Rockwell and John Malkovich in what's being called Wild Horses Nine. Buscemi is replacing Mark Ruffalo (and I feel like that's the first and only time that sentence has been or will be uttered) and the movie will shoot on Easter Island of all places later this month. I have to admit I sort of feel like Sam Rockwell is a harbinger of doom as far as McDonagh movies go -- he starred in my two least favorite movies from the director previously. But maybe their third time together will be a charm? And Posey's presence more than makes up for anyone else. Our queen! I'm slightly curious what y'all are thinking of her work on The Whote Lotus but also hesitant to ask because just know I vehemently disagree with any complaints, of which I know many are going around. I think she's hilarious AND I think she's nailing the accent. So there!

Don't Forget...

... the third seasons of both The White Lotus and Yellowjackets are back onn T.V. this weekend! And I have illustarated this news with two photos of Sam Nivola, son of Alessandro, who is on TWL so you don't forget. Of course Arnold Schwarzenegger already did that work for me when he told us all to keep our eyes peeled for his son Patrick's bare ass. What a proud papa!

Everything You Ever Need To Know About Life...

 ... you can learn from:

The Nest (2020)

Allison: You can blame shit on me Sam, but you're
the one who's going to have to live with your choices.
Sam: I don't have to make choices, mom.
I'll just find a man to make my choices for me.

A happy 44 to Carrie Coon today! We've just got a couple of weeks until The White Lotus returns for its third season and we're gifted with CC dropped Mike White dialogue like its hot (her AND Parker Posey -- I can barely contain my glee; and you did hear the show's already renewed for a fourth season right? It sppears the trade-off on this timeline was everything else is shit but we get Mike White finally being appreciated properly.) Anyway if you still haven't seen Sean Durkin's 2020 film The Nest (it got seriously lost and underappreciated amid the doom of that year) I highly recommend you seek it out; I think it's brilliant. Here's my review. And even if you disagree there's a Carrie Coon dance sequence that transcends all differences!

You should also go and watch His Three Daughters on Netflix by the way -- the movie got ignored by awards bodies I think because nobody knew which actress between Coon, Natasha Lyonne, and Elisabeth Olsen to focus on because they're all really great in it. A really fine piece of work, that one.

MaXXXine, You Forgot To Put On The Red Light

I thought George Miller's Furiosa was going to be my greatest disappointment of 2024, but here comes Ti West's MaXXXine to kick Furiosa outta the way with one high-heeled boot and snatch that feeble crown. Both subsequent films in franchises that are named after their leading ladies -- does this mean that I hate Strong Female Characters? Or maybe I just hate shitty movies? Y'all decide -- I'm too spent from drowning in disappointment this whole damned summer.

As a fairly rabid fan of both X and Pearl -- I've never been able to choose a favorite between the two as they hit very different joy buttons making it depend on my mood -- it brings me absolutely nothing but pain to share that MaXXXine did next to nothing for me. The giddiness I felt for the first half an hour or so here watching Mia Goth klick ass -- and even though this movie has very little idea what to do with her Mia Goth never stops kicking ass -- speeded out of me like air fizzling from a gently pricked balloon.

I'm seeing it a second time next week and I am fervently hoping that I'll be less down on it after that, but as it stands now on a single watch MaXXXine just feels like whiff after whiff -- it sets up what oughta be homerun after homerun and then just spins its wheels around them, unsure where to go or what to say or do. Nothing feels very propulsive, or meaningful -- ideas are introduced only to suffocate from lack of oxygen.

Stylistically it's sometimes fun, but only on a surface-level -- yes okay you're using the Brian De Palma split-screens, but where is any sense of De Palma's sleaze and perversion? Nowhere, that's where. It's a heap of red herrings lit up by neon signs. There's no urgency, no danger -- Maxine herself is such a force we never fear for her, and she remains so singlemindedly antisocial that the "friends" she's made, the ones who are in danger, never register enough for us to care when their times to bleed come.

I know there's been some retroactive appreciation for Scream 3 over the past several years -- mostly due to Parker Posey's hilarious turn in it -- but all I could think of watching MaXXXine was Scream 3 and not in a good way. There are half-baked meta allusions about the brutality of behind-the-scenes Hollywood yadda yadda but neither film makes them amount to much. And MaXXXine doesn't even have a Parker Posey to rescue it. It's Scream 3 without Parker Posey! Imagine!

Of course Goth is never bad and she gives it her all, but there's just nowhere for Maxine the character as written to go -- not as this movie shows it anyway. The pieces of the mystery that she finds herself in click into their expected place with a complete lack of surprise, or oomph -- MaXXXine feels like everybody cashed their checks and was halfway out the door before the first clapboard could slap Action. This was so fucking depressing.

Glover the Lover

I haven't seen any of it myself yet but I've only heard mixed-to-bad things about the Mr. and Mrs Smith series that's hitting Amazon today... and yet, as seen in my tweet down below, I kind of don't care when they've got Donald Glover looking like that on it. I'm easy like that! Plus Maya Erskine of PEN15 fame??? Yeah there's no way in hell I'm not watching this show. Then you keep glancing down the cast list -- Alexander Skarsgård! Paul Dano! Wagner Moura! Ron Perlman! John Turturro! Parker f'ing Posey! Does it even matter if the show is good when it's got this cast? (Cut to me, very sad, in about twelve hours.) Anyway no matter what this show's existence reminded me of that time Donald strutted around the streets of Manhattan in the sluttiest short-shorts outfit imaginable and for that we all (i.e. me) win.

Parker Posey! The White Lotus! Ahhh!!!

Okay we can shut down for the day, we've reached our pinnacle and nothing's gonna top this -- Parker Posey is going to be in The White Lotus' third season. She was on our wish list of names last year -- Parker is on our wish list for every thing, every time, every where -- but the fact that it's actually happening is too good to believe. Parker Posey and Mike White working together -- it's a dream pairing and I am tingling tip to toe y'all. It honestly seems insane that they've never done anything before, and the fact that it's happening feels so monumental like a prophecy being fulfilled.

That also would be epic. Anyway my apologies to the other names that Deadline drops in its announcement -- those being Leslie Bibb, Jason Isaacs, Michelle Monaghan, and Tayme Thapthimthong -- but all I want to talk about is Parker... oh and one other name! A well-known Thai actor named Dom Hetrakul who is extraordinarily hot and who I will now share several photos of after the jump...

The Thunderdome of Maternal Disappointment

Well I did my best to review slash wrestle with Ari Aster's Beau is Afraid, which is out in limited release at the moment and hitting more screens come Friday -- click on over to Pajiba to read my (mostly) non-spoilery thoughts. The first time I watched the movie I was like fuck me, what the hell do I write about that? What the hell even was that? So I went and saw it a second time and after the second time I was like...  fuck me, what the hell do I write about that? What the hell even was that? But I tried! I tried to get some thoughts down proper-like. And if that sounds like I didn't enjoy the experience that's not the case -- the review will make that clear. It's just... it's so, so much, you guys.

Thursday's Ways Not To Die

Amateur (1994)

Listen. If Isabelle Huppert suddenly popped up in front of me wearing a leather slicker and wielding a power-drill I would probably throw myself out of the window too. When I saw this scene last night for the first time while watching Hal Hartley's dryly comic noir, which feels beamed in from another galaxy in the same way that every Hal Hartley movie I have ever seen feels beamed in from another galaxy, I turned to my boyfriend and said that Isabelle Huppert wielding a power-drill might be the scariest image I have ever seen on-screen. And I have seen some shit, believe you me. And the character she's playing here is far from the terrors she's given life to in other movies -- her character is kind of sweet and innocent in this movie, even as she annoys her neighbors by reading porn loudly in diners. But it's still Isabelle Huppert wielding a power-drill when it comes down to it. And that shit's scary. It's a big enough image to've made it onto the poster!

Of courser that image gives you ideas that this will be the "Isabelle Huppert remakes Takashi Miike's Audition" movie of your dreams, which it seriously is not, alas. As you can tell by the goofiness captured up top, when the power-drill wielding does finally occur and all that happens is the dude flops out an open window. That said I dug Amateur -- it's very very funny if you're at all able to get onto Hartley's weird wavelength. (It's streaming right now as part of Criterion's new Huppert Collection, which is a marvel top to bottom.) And Parker Posey pops up for two minutes and steals the whole movie from everybody, as has always been her way.

Anyway I'm excited to see that Hartley is working on a new movie -- it's been far too long. (Did anybody watch Red oaks, the Amazon series he directed several episodes of? I did not.) The new movie is called Where to Land and here is how IMDb is describing it:

"Joseph Fulton, a famous director, wants to work at a cemetery. Meanwhile, he has his last will and testament drawn up. His girlfriend thinks he's dying. Rumor spreads and soon everyone he knows gathers to say their last farewells."

Let's all form a prayer circle that the lead female role goes to Parker! A Hartley movie without her still never feels right, no matter how many times it happens. Hit the jump for links to all of the previous "Ways Not To Die"...

Beau Ain't the Only One

I have entirely lost track of time -- which seems fitting having just watched this trailer! -- because last Thursday I'd posted the poster for Ari Aster's new film Beau is Afraid starring Joaquin Phoenix and I said at the time that they were promising the trailer would be dropped the following Tuesday. Well when the trailer did indeed drop this morning my brain entirely short-wired realizing that five days had somehow passed since I'd said that? How? How, I ask you? Retitle this bitch Jason is Afraid because facts.

Anyway yes the trailer is here and I know I'm not the only one getting Charlie Kaufman vibes (which I mentioned last week -- last week! -- with the poster as well) because I saw people saying as much on Twitter. It's screaming Synecdoche New York meets I'm Thinking of Ending Things at me. And I like it, I like it! Anyway watch and decide for yourself:

Listen if there's anyone that everyone should be aping it's Charlie Kaufman, so you'll hear no complaints around these parts. It's a fact that when it's a year that Charlie Kaufman puts out a movie the number one slot on my "favorite films of the year" list is always accounted for, and has been every damned time. But one of my other favorite filmmakers riffing on Kaufman? Sign me the fuck up, and that's before we even get to the glimpse of Parker Posey...

Beau is Afraid is out on April 21st!
Not soon enough! Bring it the fuck on!

No Disappointment Here

I apologize in advance because I can already tell I'm having one of those days where my brain is all over the map -- I think most people call these "manic episodes" but I ain't most people! Anyway have any of you ever been to Cape Disappointment in Washington state? My boyfriend and I were traversing that area on a trip around the Northwest a decade or so ago and ended up there and were delighted by the name, and (to finally get to my point) I thought about that place whenever I read the title of Ari Aster's next movie was Disappointment Blvd., and that made me happy. Fond memories! But Disappointment Blvd. was not to be -- talk about asking the critics to start licking their poison pens to pun themselves unto unconsciousness -- and so they changed the title to Beau Is Afraid, and today we have the first poster seen above. A24 says they'll drop the trailer on Tuesday. We know very little about what the movie's about -- or at least I do because I purposefully stopped paying attention since I don't need to be sold on an Ari Aster movie at this point. I'm there. I probably won't even watch the trailer. What we do know for sure is that Beau stars an astonishing cast, including Joaquin Phoenix -- several of him, judging by that poster! -- and Parkey Posey and Amy Ryan and Richard Kind and Nathan Lane and Patti Lupone and Denis Ménochet, among others. It's a weird cast and it looks like a weird movie and obviously we cannot f'ing wait. And the poster says April! So we don't have to wait too long! In summation...

Wherefore Art Thou Criterion

It's the happiest day of the month, Criterion Announcement Day! Where the company called Criterion announces all of their new titles for home video release. Today's announcement takes us to the releases of February 2023, but while we'll no doubt be chilly ourselves there in the dead of winter these releases are anything but. Take for example Franco Zefferelli's 1968 take on William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, which they're dropping onto blu-ray on (awww) Valentine's Day. Anybody else watch this in English class in high school? Do they do that anymore? As much as I love the Baz Luhrmann version I really hope they're not showing that in English classes nowadays. Still, Leonard Whiting's bum was inspirational for many of us so I hope the younger generations will now get to appreciate it in gorgeous 4K.

Also in February -- Krzysztof Kieślowski's masterpiece "Three Colors" trilogy of Blue and White and Red is getting upgraded to 4K! A grand excuse to re-watch these, it's been ages. Well I've seen Blue several times over the years as that's always been my favorite (Binoche-head that I am) but the other two could definitely use another look. And I have a feeling I'll appreciate them even more now that I've got all of these years piled on me, than I did when I was in my early 20s watching them the first time. That hits on February 7th, while on the 28th Robert Townsend's 1987 film Hollywood Shuffle is hitting the Collection. I have never seen it, which is shameful, especially since the description of the film they share -- a Hollywood satire making fun of how all 1980s Hollywood wants is "an Eddie Murphy type" -- sounds rife with possibility.

Also getting a 4K upgrade is Richard Linklater's seminal 1993 classic Dazed and Confused, hitting on February 21st. I've never been Linklater's biggest fan but I do like Dazed - I mean it's got Parker Posey so I have to, legally speaking. I haven't seen it in many a year either -- all I really remember is McConaughey, which seems about right, as he was still fuckable then. Anyway last but hardly least on the 28th Criterion is releasing a two-film boxed-set of director Marguerite Duras films, including India Song from 1975 and Baxter, Vera Baxter from 1977. I've not seen either -- I've never seen any of Duras' work! -- but I have always wanted to and this seems a perfect introduction. I mean they both star Delphine Seyrig for god's sake! Delphine Seyrig is one of the jewels in our crown. Anybody seen these?

Small Screen Dorians

This year GALECA, the LGBT critic's guild of which I have been a member for a few years now, decided to split our annual Dorian Awards into two parts, with our Film awards following the end-of-year schedule that the Oscars do basically, and our TV awards hitting mid-year, closer to the Emmys I guess. (I have no idea when the Emmys happen, I haven't paid the Emmys attention in at least a decade.) Point being the TV portion of our Dorians is happening right now and today the nominations were announced! Photographed above is the one that made me the happiest -- we have been worshipping the goddess Melanie Lynskey since Heavenly Creatures and the Yellowjackets love is well-earned! -- but if you click on over to The Hollywood Reporter you can see all of our noms, and I actually think they're pretty good! Nomination leaders Hacks and Somebody Somewhere are both wonderful shows anyway, and there are countless highlights besides. Okay I don't really know how The Staircase got totally snubbed but I'll just chalk that up to us being unsure where to spread the wealth, in which case let me just add...

Tuesday, June 21, 2022

Good Morning, World

Before the series The Staircase aired I never would've thought to do a post on nepotism-baby Patrick Schwarzenegger because he hadn't done anything to give me a reason to. I hadn't seen him act in much but when I did I wasn't exactly walking out inspired -- like, I'd wanted to like the horror movie Daniel Isn't Real more than I did but I thought the two leads, one of which was him, were distractingly weak. Anyway like every single person on The Staircase, Schwarzenegger was very good -- maybe not Toni Collette or Parker Posey good, but asking that of him would just be mean -- and here we are and I am sharing these photos from Interview Magazine this morning. There's a long convo with his co-star Dane DeHaan there as well, check it out if you're so inclined, or just hit the jump for the rest of the photoshoot...

Everything You Ever Need To Know About Life...

 ... you can learn from:

Waiting For Guffman (1996)

UFO Expert: I've been coming to this circle for about five years, and measuring it. The diameter and the circumference are constantly changing, but the radius stays the same. Which brings me to the number 5. There are five letters in the word Blaine. Now, if you mix up the letters in the word Blaine, mix 'em around, eventually, you'll come up with Nebali. Nebali. The name of a planet in a galaxy way, way, way... way far away. And another thing. Once you go into that circle, the weather never changes. It is always 67 degrees with a 40% chance of rain.

Classified as a 1996 movie most of the time because it played some fests that year Christopher Guest's masterpiece of loving lo-fi thesp foolishness actually came out properly in 1997 -- January 31st 1997 to be exact, making today the film's 25th anniversary! Yes, if you do the math, that makes you old. Me too! Guffman isn't my favorite Guest comedy -- my favorite will always be Best in Show -- but it's my second fave and so full of deep belly laughs it should be classified as a tummy toner. I've done several "Life Lessons" post for the film over the years, see them here, but today I was struck by this WTF random David Cross scene, which I always forget about until it's happening. Good stuff! Do we think Chris Guest will ever reunite the team and make another one of these? (Please say yes.)

Everything You Ever Need To Know About Life...

... you can learn from:

Libby Mae: What New York really is, is it's an island,
with lots of people, lots of different people... I hope
to maybe meet some guys, some Italian guys,
and maybe watch some TV.

Happy birthday, Parker Posey!

You Better Posey

Exciting news today, as a filmmaker as grand delicious as Hereditary and Midsommar filmmaker Ari Aster has decided to work with an actor as grand dame damn amazing as Parker Posey! Weirdly I've only posted about Aster's next film once, way back in November (when Joaquin Phoenix was announced as its star), even though we've gotten other updates since then -- what can I say, it's been a helluva time. Anyway what we do know now is the film is titled Disappointment Blvd and it's described as “an intimate, decades-spanning portrait of one of the most successful entrepreneurs of all time.” There have been scattered rumors it could be a musical, but today's news says nothing about that. What it does say is is that Parker Posey will be co-starring, and that is enough.

But there is indeed actually even more! More names in the cast include Stephen McKinley Henderson (you should know him as the sad drama teacher in Lady Bird), , Hayley Squires (recently seen in Ben Wheatley's In the Earth), Michael Gandolfini (son of James, seen playing his pops in The Many Saints of Newark), Zoe Lister-Jones, Amy Ryan (!), Nathan Lane (!!), and Patti LuPone (!!!). Parker Posey and Patti Lupone in one movie? That's some crazy shit. (And those last couple of names definitely seem to hint toward the "musical" thing.) But the name I'm most excited about, besides Posey, is French actor Denis Ménochet, as we are massive Ménochet-stans in this house. You know him from a dozen things but probably first and foremost from the opening scene of Inglourious Basterds. He absolutely rules.

I Am Link

--- Now Them's Some Women
-- I was already pleased as a punch to the happy-places when it was announced back in December that not only was Sarah Polley planning on directing her first new movie in nine years (an adaptation of the book Women Talking) but that it was going to star Frances f'ing McDormand, so trying to measure my renewed enthusiasm when a big batch of absolute queens were further announced to fill out the film's cast this week would be a folly's errand. Stratospheric shit! Said queens include Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley, and Ben f'ing Whishaw, oh my! The story "follows a group of women in an isolated religious colony as they struggle to reconcile their faith with a series of sexual assaults committed by the colony’s men." This is gonna be something y'all.

--- Friends No More -- I'll admit that my enthusiasm for In Bruges director Martin McDonagh has been dulled a bit by the projects he's done since that -- Seven Psychopaths and especially Three Billboards (ugh) were big letdowns for me -- but today's news that he's reuniting with the stars of his original masterpiece, Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, for his next one well that gives me renewed vim n' vigor, McDonagh-wise. The film will be called The Banshees of Inisherin and will film in August and is about a pair of lifelong friends who're navigating the awkward space where they no longer want to be friends.

--- Ain't No Mountain -- Similarly it's hard to get too worked up over a new Doug Liman movie, even though his earliest work I glommed onto, 1999's Go, ranks among my all-time faves, since he hasn't made anything as good since. But I'm gonna give him another chance with this next project because it stars Ewan McGregor and Ewan is always worth a chance. It's a biopic of adventurer George Mallory, who tried to climb Mount Everest back in the 1920s, and it will co-star Mark Strong and Outlander hunk Sam Heughan.  Oh and it'll be called Everest, just like the Jake Gyllenhaal movie from a couple of years back, but I have a feeling that if Ewan has a nude scene in his Everest movie he'll let them leave it in, unlike Jake, so Ewan wins.

--- Step Up -- Another addition to the incredibly stacked cast of that true-crime adaptation The Staircase, which already had Juliette Binoche, Colin Firth, and Toni Collette -- ex-twink Dane DeHaan will now also be sleazing around the joint. I was going to make a joke about how he could play The Owl but I don't know if any of you will get that joke. Anyway I apparently missed the news that the series will also co-star Parker freaking Posey too! Everyone, literally everyone, will be there. get me to this set!

--- What's Good For The Gigolo -- An update on a project we've been keeping tabs on: the series re-do of American Gigolo starring Jon Bernthal got picked up by Showtime, a ten-episode order. It's actually technically a sequel to the movie starring Richard Gere; Bernthal's playing the same character, just years later after he's gotten out of jail. See all of MNPP's previous coverage on this series here, but pay special attention to this post. That's the winner.

--- Til Death Do -- Kristen Wiig is going to star in an adaptation of the upcoming book called The Husbands, which "follows an overworked mother who, while house-hunting in a nice suburban neighborhood, meets a group of high-powered women with enviably supportive husbands. When she agrees to take on a legal case involving the untimely death of one resident’s husband, she risks exposing not only the secrets at the heart of her own marriage, but the true secret to having it all, one worth killing for." I can't for the life of me tell the tone from that description; it could be dead serious or it could be Desperate Housewives. Even a gender-flipped Stepford Wives maybe?

--- Channing Sandwich -- Speaking of movie descriptions that I can't get a handle on the tone for, Zoe Kravitz has gone and written herself a star vehicle called Pussy Island (indeed) that will have her heading to the orgy-centric tropical getaway of a tech-billionaire (to be played by Channing Tatum, somehow); while there things go from sexy to dangerous, or something. I don't know. Just throw me in a Channing Tatum Orgy and I'll figure it out as I go.

--- And Finally since I began this post with a crazy stacked cast I'll finish with the same - Apple is producing a psychological-thriller series called Surface from the creator of the High Fidelity series, and it will star several MNPP fave babes including Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Stephan James, Ari Graynor, François Arnaud, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Marianne Jean Baptiste. Good grief -- Get me to that set! To all of the sets! I gotta get the fuck outta my house! Ahem. Surface is described as "an elevated thriller about a woman’s quest to rebuild her life after a suicide attempt, and her struggle to remember – and understand – everything that led up to the moment when she jumped." Gugu is the lead. (And hopefully Oliver & Francois are sharing a trailer.)
