Everything You Ever Need To Know About Life...
... you can learn from:
Brokeback Mountain (2005)
Cassie: I don't get you, Ennis del Mar.Ennis: I'm sorry. Was probably no fun anyway, was I?Cassie: Ennis, girls don't fall in love with fun!
Also justice for Linda Cardellini who never gets talked about giving one of the great performances in this movie but surely does

Let's Do the Brokeback Again

Today's Fanboy Delusion
Today I'd rather be...
... rolling in the dirt with Mike Faist and Lucas Hedges.
Don't ask me where this video from the theatrical production of Brokeback Mountain came from -- I have no clue, I just stumbled on it on Tumblr last week and set it aside to post when I had a minute. Did this production get a filmed release? I feel as if it would be stupid for it to not get that, given what we saw of the play (hubba hubba) but I know a lot of smiliar wonders have been lost into the ether. So let's just be grateful for this sexy eight-second snippet.

Brokeback Mounts a 4K Edition

Quote of the Day

"Back then, [‘Brokeback Mountain’] had a ceiling. We got a lot of support — up to that much... It has that feeling. I wasn’t holding a grudge or anything. It’s just how they were."

Jonny On Orgasms & Brokeback Mountain
"Unfortunately, there just weren’t that many were there growing up... but I met Matthew Rhys recently, who I just love. And I was thinking about that relationship in Brothers and Sisters. And then there was Queer as Folk. Russell, T. Davies changed the game. So many people owe so much to him just purely for visibility. There is no Tim and Hawk to a 2023 audience without Queer as Folk....
Speaking of history, I was doing media studies with an amazing teacher and I decided that I was going to do my dissertation about the representations of Hutus and Tutsis and the Rwanda genocide, looking at Hotel Rwanda and Shooting Dogs. And then Brokeback Mountain came out and I was like, “Hang on, how can I possibly create a world where I can go and have a free pass to go to the cinema to watch it 10 times?” I’m really proud of my 17-year-old self, I wasn’t necessarily out, but I changed the topic to representation of homosexuality in Brokeback Mountain and I watched that film 10 times. And this amazing teacher, Dr. Brunton, who probably had an idea of what was going on, was just like, “This is brilliant, keep going, keep going.” And I think it was the best mark I ever got."
There's also a lot of talk of eye-fucking strangers and orgasms and everything you want to hear Jonathan Bailey talk about so make sure you go read the entire thing. But first here I have the photos for you after the jump...

Good Morning, Gay Cowboys
"A man rides a horse across the desert that separates him from Bitter Creek. He comes to visit Sheriff Jake. Twenty-five years earlier, both the sheriff and Silva, the rancher who rides out to meet him, worked together as hired gunmen. Silva visits him with the excuse of reuniting with his friend from his youth, and they do indeed celebrate their meeting, but the next morning Sheriff Jake tells him that the reason for his trip is not to go down the memory lane of their old friendship...."It premieres at Cannes next month and then I guess we'll see from there? There is a little more info (as in quotes from Pedro) over at IndieWire; otherwise just watch the trailer here:
ETA after some research it appears that the actors playing the younger gay cowboys are José Condessa and Jason Fernández, and the latter was kind enough to share some shots from the film shoot on his Insta which I haven't seen before! And if I haven't seen them then I am guessing that you haven't seen them, because I been paying attention real close. Anyway hit the jump for the photos which are howdy-doo real promising...

Pedro's Strange Ways
Knowing how rich Pedro's short film The Human Voice with Tilda Swinton was a couple years back the fact that this is only thirty minutes long gives me no pause whatsoever. Anyway it's premiering at Cannes and we cannot wait. That poster up top is so Johnny Guitar we might explode!

The Brokeback Boys of (Not) Broadway
But also up for our former and most recent Riff is the long gestating stage adaptation of Brokeback Mountain! Him and Lucas Hedges are going to do it in London. And it's a musical? Can't wait for the "Spit Lube" song. In all seriousness it doesn't entirely sound like the characters themselves will be singing -- it sounds like a band will be playing country songs astride the stage antics. This is set to debut in August. I am perfectly fine with this, by the way -- it was Annie Proulx's story before it was Ang Lee's movie and there's lots of room for different interpretations. Do I think it's kind of weird that this very American story will be playing in London? Kinda! But that might just be me being annoyed I won't be able to see it talking.

Cowboys on the Verge of a Nervous Ho-Down
"He was reticent to reveal too many details about the storyline, but said that Hawke plays a sheriff named Jake, while Pascal will be the gunslinger Silva, and the characters live on opposing sides of the desert. The pair haven’t seen each other in 25 years. “So one of them travels through the desert to find the other,” Almodóvar said. “There will be a showdown between them, but really the story is very intimate.” Could it even be…romantic? Almodóvar chuckled. “You can guess,” he said. “I mean, masculinity is one of the subjects of the movie.”

Quote of the Day
"Aaahh. I don’t know. Maybe? Part of the medicine of storytelling is that we were two straight guys playing these parts. There was a stigma about playing a part like that, you know, why would you do that? And I think it was very important to both of us to break that stigma. ... But then again I think that has led the way towards people saying, you know, people of all different experiences should be playing more roles, that it shouldn’t be limited to a small group of people. And I believe that. But at the same time, I was very proud to be in that space and to be given that opportunity. And the reaction from the majority of the gay community when the movie came out, I got this sort of — we both did, everyone in the movie — we got this overwhelming sense of open-heartedness and gratitude.”
I think we all have confused and contradictory opinions on this subject because there is no hard answer -- I think it just depends on the situation, and he's right that it was a huge deal in 2005, these name actors taking on these gay roles. You had to be there. And I wouldn't give up Jake or Heath's performances, or Timothee Chalamet's performance in Call Me By Your Name, for the world. But of course LGBT actors need better, fairer opportunities, and there's not nothing to the lived-in experience that they'd bring to these roles. I mean just think how much better the world would be without having been forced to suffer through James Corden in The Prom?
