Wanna try me?" and "The point is of no return and you've reached it!" all day yesterday in honor of Tura Santana, best known as Varla in Russ Meyer's classic Faster Pussycat! Kill! --- The Great & Powerful Franco - Are there really five James Francos and we just haven't noticed? Is his brother Dave putting on make-up and pretending to be him sometimes? Otherwise I have no idea how he's spreading himself so thin. His name's been attached to something new every other day - today he's apparently considering playing the Wizard of Oz in Sam Raimi's take on the material. I'm certainly not complaining - I love him and remember this film was once set to be ruined by Robert Downey Jr. I just worry he might implode.

--- A Good Girl Friend - And so it begins - Greta Gerwig has landed a role in an Ashton Kutcher movie. Earth swallows us in 3, 2... I kid. It's Ivan Reitman's next film, and also stars Natalie Portman, whom Miss Gerwig will be playing the best friend to. Hopefully she's got a character to play, and will shine her magic mumbly shine.
--- Mo' Ridley - Last week Ridley Scott spilled a bunch of news on his Alien prequel; well a little bit more just trickled out via Collider - the movie will be in 3D (duh) and it very well may be a pair of films, not just a single prequel. I'm so conflicted over this and will probably whine about being conflicted over this movie every single time I post about it even as I keep posting about it because I have no self control. So y'all have that to look forward to!
--- Via Lola - The German equivalent of the Oscars had their awards this weekend and Nat has the run-down... they gave Michael Haneke's masterpiece The White Ribbon ten statues, including Best Picture, Director, Screenplay, Cinematography, Actor, Supporting Actress, Costumes, Art Direction, Make-up and Sound. Susanne Lothar didn't win Best Actress though, which blows. Anyway, yay Germany!
--- Go Go Gein - Here's a good way to spend a Monday morning - flipping thru a scrapbook of Life magazine pictures taken of Ed Gein's house and trial and what not. (via Sean) It's terror-iffic! Sean is right when he says we wouldn't have had modern horror without Gein. He opened up a whole new world, he did!
It's long, so bookmark it to read later when you're not so busy skinning baby rodents and trying to suck your own dick, but Roger Ebert's got a new piece up inspired by the death last week of Malcolm McLaren, and it's amazing. Back in 1977 he and Russ Meyer worked on the script for a Sex Pistols film, which he says was to be Beyond the Valley of the Dolls meets A Hard Day's Night, to be called Who Killed Bambi. Apparently only one scene was ever shot before the plug was pulled..
"After dinner, we drove Johnny in a cab to where he lived, in an anonymous street in Notting Hill. "Fucking McLaren," he said. "That was the first decent meal I've had in a month." Meyer gave him five pounds and we waited outside a convenience store for him to buy lager and canned pork and beans. "Fucking great," Johnny said.
In all the years I knew him, I never heard Russ Meyer say the word "fucking." Perhaps he had too devout a respect for the concept. He preferred such synonyms as "wail," "pound," "pummel," "belabor" and "conjoin," always pronounced with enthusiasm."

In the middle of his review for Madonna's directorial debut Filth & Wisdom, I found this semi-distracted mid-review ramble by Roger Ebert on the changes in what constitutes sexy over time pretty smart and amusing... especially when one remembers he's the screen-writer for Beyond the Valley of the Dolls:.
"I saw my first strip show at the old Follies Burlesque on South State, one day after I moved to Chicago, and I interviewed the immortal Tempest Storm when she appeared here. The strippers at that time performed slowly and seductively, and it was a "tease." Today's strippers leap onstage already almost naked and perform contortions that gotta hurt. Some are so gifted, they can get one boob going clockwise and the other counterclockwise.
Ugh. They're erotic only to men who enjoy seeing women humiliate themselves. I was but a callow youth from a rural town amid the soy fields, but reader, I confess I idealized some of them.
