Anyway on Tuesday we shared the trailer for director Zack Snyder's movie The Last Photograph which co-stars Fra in its lead opposite an extremely buff and oft-naked Stuart Martin. You might recognize Fra from previous turns on the Hawkeye series or from the Rebel Moon movies or from all his hot sexy times with Leo Woodall on Prime Target. Or maybe just from the several times I've posted about him now. I do sometimes tend to get fixated!
Although I have a love-hate relationship with Zack Snyder's movies I think it's a little less contentious than most -- I loved Dawn of the Dead and 300 unabashedly, and Watchmen and Sucker Punch both have pieces worth defending. If I had to watch hetero-bombast I always preferred his more Kinsey-middle version to Michael Bay's! Anyway it wasn't until he waded into the swamp of making really shitty Superman movies (Henry Cavill's pecs excused) that I became more and more exasperated by him -- yes I have seen "his" cut of Justice League and yes it still sucks. Anyway he seems to've wanted a change as well so we've been keeping track of his next movie The Last Photographfor awhile now -- okay mainly because Snyder has been posting beefcake-y photos of his leading men ...
... Stuart Martin and (out gay!) Fra Fee on social media for awhile, but still. It had me curious! Anyway the movie's got a trailer today and as you can see by these gifs Snyder hasn't lost any of his ability to objectify beautiful men. This is why he and I will probably never be over! Watch:
The Last Photograph is set to premiere at TIFF soon -- in it Martin plays an ex-DEA agent who enlists the aid of a "junkie photographer" (Fee) to find the kidnapped children of a murdered diplomat in South America. I don't know what to make of the politics and exoticist issues on display in this trailer -- let's hope Snyder has delivered something thoughtful and not jingoistic. One can dream! I love it when actors do the work for me -- and you can chisel that on my tombstone -- so thanks to German actor Matthias Schweighöfer for posting this new photoshoot in honor of his own 44th birthday today! Schweighöfer was a great big star in Germany before making some in-roads here in the States thanks mainly to Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead zombie action movie -- his character even got his own spin-off prequel with Army of Thieves the same year. And then he had a small role in Oppenheimer too but then well who didn't? Anyway he first caught our eye well before that, romping about in his altogether with his buddy and also MNPP fave Florian David Fritz in the movie 100 Things which I must've posted about a half billion times back circa 2018. That there is our first look at Charlie Hunnam in Zack Snyder's upcoming Netflix movie Rebel Moon, via Vanity Fair who have a big piece on it today -- below you'll see Chuck alongside his co-stars Michiel Huisman and Sofia Boutella. Apparently this started off as a Star Wars spin-off but became its own thing and... uhh yeah, we can tell. Anyway Rebel Moon comes out right before Christmas and I'd like for it to be good, since Charlie (and us fans of Charlie) could really use something good on his resume right about now!
That expression on Henry Cavill's face just about sums it up, right? He's just making the "Ooh I squatted too much" grimace of work-out brah -- I'm over here making that grimace because of the state of the world. If only we could bring our grimaces together and make something beautiful! Alas. Cursed to grimace alone for eternity. Anyway hi everybody! I don't usually post on Fridays in the summertime since I've got Summer Fridays -- no I am not rubbing it in, don't you grimace at me -- but I wanted to share that photo for one, which is a new old photo (it hasn't been seen before but it was taken during the filming of Justice League), and for two I wanted to remind everybody no, I don't post today! It's a weird way to say I am not posting today -- by posting -- I will admit. But I do things my way! Oh and I will probably post later today at least once. I have some other things to share. How many of you watched Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead on Netflix (or in theaters I suppose) this weekend? If you did then you probably noticed German twunk Matthias Schweighöfer (seen here in another movie, the 2011 film What a Man) and maybe you recognized him from some of his German films, or maybe you recognized him from my incessant posting about him over the past several years -- whatever it was there he was, still being adorable, only this time with zombies. And as per usual when it comes to Matthias...
... or at least what I have experienced of him (you should check out his movie 100 Things with Florian David Fitz, or at least my posts about it) -- his character had mad chemistry with another dude. In this instance Omari Hardwick's hard-ass Vanderohe -- and that's not just me projecting! There's an entire interview with the two actors at Collider about their "bromance." (Thx Mac) Anyway the happy news is apparently an entire spin-off film has already been made about Schweighöfer's character -- Schweighöfer himself directed it (he's been directing in Germany for awhile), it's called Army of Thieves, and it's a prequel about his character's time during the zombie apocalypse, which in Snyder's film happens over the opening credits. It's going to be out before this year is over. Let's hope Matthias knows his audience and gays it up!
I don't know if you were privy to my inflamed reaction to the entire Justice League Snyder Cut bullshit debacle -- think I said more, or should I say "shrieked more," about it on twitter than I did here on the site proper. But I found the entire spectacle distasteful -- the fact that so much money got tossed at it on a poisonous flotilla of toxic fanboy behavior; the fact that a terrible film got turned into a four-hour terrible film; the fact that anyone with eyes and ears tried to say it was any better on the ass-end of the experience and not just hours and hours more shit. Anyway in my ever so humble opinion that was a gross experience for all parties involved!
That said the devil help me I am definitely feeling myself suckered in to Mr. Snyder's next movie, the zombie-heist flick Army of the Dead. It recalls the good part of Snyder's career -- aka the start, with his Dawn of the Dead remake. And it's truly got a super cast. Who can argue with Dave Bautista? He's so goddamned likable. You add Hiroyuki Sanada, Garret Dillahunt, Matthias Schweighöfer, Raúl Castillo, Omari Hardwick (seen above, strapping it on), and a zombie tiger? A zombie tiger! And I am pretty sure I saw a horde of Chippendales dancer zombies at one point? I can't fight this, you guys. Here's the just-dropped trailer:
We'll find out soon anyway, since Army of the Dead is hitting Netflix in a little over a month on May 21st. That said this is definitely one I'm a little annoyed I won't be able to see on a big screen. Right? It is screaming out for a great big screen.
I know they keep saying that the "SnyderVerse" (oh barf that phrase) is dead now after Warner Brothers let his annoying fans get their precious "Snyder Cut" released, but I keep not seeing (or not trying all that hard to see, more likely) what that means for Jason Momoa as Aquaman, or Ezra Miller as The Flash, or even Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. All of those things are still things, right? I'm pretty sure I saw some casting news on The Flash movie just a couple of weeks ago. And yes I realize all of this might be easily google-able but it's Monday morning and I'm lazy, okay? So if anybody has insight on this weird place we find ourselves in, DC-Hero-wise, please share in the comments! (pic via)

The first episode of Marvel's second MCU series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is now available on Disney+ for your eyeballs, including this very brief glimpse of Sebastian Stan just the way we like him (that would be "out of costume") -- I saw the first episode a few days ago and it's fine! Like I said awhile back I don't envy anything having to follow-up the wonderful weirdness of WandaVision, especially a show so Standard Marvel-y as this, but there's some good action and the Falcon's character especially is going to benefit from some depth. We'll see what happens! Unlike the mess at DC (I sort of live-tweeted the Snyder Cut last night if you missed it, see below) at least Marvel, for all their highs and lows, seems to remember why comics resonate in the first place and don't non-stop revel in aggressive ugliness...

I didn't post the poster for Zack Snyder's forthcoming Zombies-in-Vegas movie Army of the Dead last week because I haven't quite decided where I stand on the movie -- Zack Snyder's 2004 Dawn of the Dead remake was far better than it had any right to be and I was his fan for a good long while after it, but diminishing cinematic returns (and his professed love of Ayn Rand, barf) eventually snuffed out that flame. But this thing has got a cast!
The film, which hits Netflix on May 21st, stars Dave Bautista, exhibitionist-Deutsche -twunk Matthias Schweighöfer (see plenty more of him here), the great Hiroyuki Sanada (we love him very much), the great Raúl Castillo (with an admittedly godawful hair-do), the great Garret Dillahunt, and many many more. There are even girls, I suspect!
Anyway I have clearly caved and am posting about the movie today because they released a trailer and it looks like a heap of big dumb Zombies-in-Vegas fun. I spotted both a Liberace and an Elvis in the mix -- it's a shame Zack couldn't get Celine Dion to play herself, but who knows what surprises he's got in store. Did you see our big "James Wolk in Watchmen" post yesterday? You need to see that. Especially since this post now won't make sense without it. Anyway a couple of you made the excellent point that the "stupid panties" (as Laurie so eloquently put it) that Wolk's character rocked -- and yes comic book fanboys I know they were a nod to the ones seen in the Alan Moore's original Watchmen book...
... I am a nerd too thank you very much -- looked an awful lot similar to the metallic high-risers that Sting sauntered about in in David Lynch's Dune. Which hey yes they do! Which is something I weirdly never noticed before -- I mean, Lynch's film came out in 1984, before Moore's comic did two years later... do we think it's possible it was a reference? I just always thought of the Doctor's choice in vertiginous briefs as a Charlie Brown squiggle myself.

See our previous post on the new film right here -- it's a heist film set in Las Vegas during the Zombie Apocalypse, and it's got a delicious cast that also includes Garret Dillahunt, Hiroyuki Sanada, Dave Bautista, and Matthias Schweighöfer. You always know it's a good sign when I'm not sure which member of a cast to google first for pictures to accompany a new film announcement -- I went with Raul Castillo (once I realized I hadn't posted the above photo when I'd posted the rest of its sweltering sexy photoshoot) but Zack Snyder's new movie also gave me the option of the great Garret Dillahunt, the classic Hiroyuki Sanada, the brick shithouse of Dave Bautista, the much-loved-from-afar German Twunk Matthias Schweighöfer.
My goodness and gracious. I know I know, I said "Zack Snyder," we all collectively shudder a bit. But once upon a time Zack Snyder made some fun movies -- I was with him longer than most sane folks, up through Sucker Punch even, or at least some of it; it was the superheroes that truly did him in. And yes I agree his Ayn Rand thing is a horror. But this new flick, besides this cast, is returning him to his roots -- it's a zombie flick a la his Dawn of the Dead remake, called Army of the Dead, which... okay let's retire the "of the Dead" titles in honor to George Romero. Those were his. But this sounds like a fun idea -- it's a heist movie set in a post-zombie-apocalypse Las Vegas. Come on! That sounds fun! Also there's this guy...
There was some hullaballoo and a tad of a brouhaha on the Twitter last night (I know when ain't there one of those two things on the Twitter) when word went around that certain people somewhere had called the photos of Jason Momoa (see below) lounging around a pool on vacation this week "fat." I'm not even going to address that because it is, by account of my eyeballs, so patently absurd as to be an obscenity against the nature of truth itself. Also...
... while I have no doubt there's some jack-hole out there who said that sort of thing on the internet (you'll find anybody willing to say anything on the internet, as I am a great big red blinking arrow sign of proof of) I never saw the receipts of the person or persons who said this junk, so I don't have a specific target to lash out at. No...
... instead what I do have is the hour I spent googling pictures of Jason Momoa last night after his name came up, and those I shall now share with you this fine fair and beautiful morning. When I wished Watchmena happy 10 last week I forgot to make any mention of Jeffrey Dean Morgan's superhero mustache, and that shan't stand. No CG required on that sucker -- take that, Henry Cavill. Of course calling The Comedian a hero is a real, real, reeeal reach I suppose. Mustaches aren't for heroes! (Sexy) Bad Dudes only!
Today is the 10th anniversary of Zack Snyder's Watchmen, a film I tend to like more than most but which I concede has its issues. (Here's my original review, which is sort of painfully rambling to read now to be honest but I'll share all the same.) It's become especially difficult in the wake of everything that Snyder has made since Watchmen to attribute as much irony to the film as I had been when I first saw it -- when I saw the film in 2009 I thought the soundtrack being excruciatingly on-the-nose was the point, that it was some meta-Verhoeven shit turning superhero propaganda in on itself. Now here ten years and one Justice League later I'm more inclined to think along the lines of my pal Chris's piece over at The Film Experience today -- that Snyder's not really in on the joke. All that said I haven't sat down and re-watched the Watchmen in awhile, so I'll shut up and just point you towards some celebratory butts.
I would be shocked to find, if I went back through our archives, that I hadn't polled this question before, but this being Zack Snyder we're talking about there's no need to work myself into a lather of creativity or anything (and anyway most of our old polls don't show their outcomes after the old polling service we used shut down). So we'll ask it today, on the occasion of Snyder's 52nd birthday...
For all of my snark towards his last few films I did really love Dawn of the Dead and 300, and I really liked Watchmen and Sucker Punch even (I know, I know), so it would be great if he got his mojo back. Yes that is Patrick giving us his best Freddie Mercury, which turns out is actually a shockingly great Freddie Mercury. I suppose I shouldn't be shocked since he was trained via Broadway and all, it's just been such a long time since he reminded us of those bonafides (and also he is so different from Mercury physically). Anyway could somebody put him in another damn musical already? I don't even like musicals, but I do like Patrick Wilson strutting around in tight white pants so it all evens out.
In other James Wan news last week whispers leaked out of some early preview screenings of Aquaman that he might've made a great movie from that most unexpected of superheroes - I haaated how they managed the character in Justice League, with all the phony baloney Ultra Masc tough-guy posturing so I hope they tone that down. You've got Jason Momoa standing there with pecs half a mile wide - you don't need to convince us he's a man. We get it. Just be fun. Show him turning sea-horses into scooters and shit. That's what we're there for.
