Time for a Battlestar Rewatch?

How in the fresh Cylon hell has it been 17 years since Battlestar Galactica finished its run? It was talked about a lot here on MNPP in our early years -- especially Jamie Bamber dropping that towel, that was a very popular subject -- but to be truthful I haven't watched a minute of the show again since it finished its run. I think I watched some but not all of the short-lived spin-off Caprica? I guess that's why it was so short-lived! Anyway news has landed today that the show is hitting streaming -- this can't be for the first time, can it? -- at Paramount+ and Pluto TV on May 1st, so perhaps a re-watch is finally in order. The world inexplicably feels more dystopian than it did during the GWB presidency, which is what that show was of course riffing on -- I feel like it might have entirely new lessons to impart here in 2026. All I know is we should throw our fucking President out of the airlock, full stop. 

Keeping Up With The Kellan Lutzes

I was just looking through Kellan Lutz's IMDb page (I don't just randomly do such things - he's turning 31 today) and wincing at some of the projects he's got lined up (look at the cast on this sucker, for instance) when I stumbled upon a movie called Money, which actually has an interesting cast... well OK it has a very attractive cast -- that's Kellan with Jesse Williams above (see a good Jesse post right here), and the film also stars BSG's Jamie Bamber.

(And yes it also has Jess Weixler, seen there second from the right, so phenomenal in Teeth.) That's a lot of hot man for one movie right there. Here's what the movie is about:

"Two wealthy businessmen are about to get away with $5 million in ill-gotten money until their plans are revealed by an uninvited house guest. "

Okay I want guesses - which of those two are the "wealthy businessmen" and which one is the "uninvited house guest"?  If the "uninvited house guest" is played by Jesse Williams then the movie suddenly becomes about race, at the very least tangentially, but that's my guess. Then again if this shot of Bamber on the set...

... is of him in character all of my assumptions go out the window. That is not a man to be trusted. Dry-humped upon, for sure - trusted, notsomuch. Anyway this movie seems like the most promising of Kellan's lot, so we wish him and this flick the best. And hey if nothing else Lisa Kudrow is probably out there figuring out a third season of The Comeback so Kellan should probably be buttering her up -- that episode where his character Chris tried to sleep with Valerie was a real highlight of the second season.

Not sure when this actually happened (and I'd like to know so I can rewind time and BE RIGHT THERE) but yesterday Tahmoh Penikett tweeted this picture of his Battlestar Galactica reunion with Michael Trucco, Jamie Bamber, and James Callis! This makes me miss that show so much. Or at least it makes me miss the locker-room scenes of that show so much. What, they couldn't have their reunion at the baths? Selfish.

I actually decided the other day to download the original series to watch; since it was before my time I've never seen it. Amazon has the reboot we do know and love on super-sale this week - the whole series for 90 bucks on bluray!!! Picture it, Jamie Bamber and his slipping towel...

It's been awhile since we checked in with Battlestar Galactica's resident towel-slinger Jamie Bamber - his birthday was about a week and a half ago (I missed it when I was out of town) so a happy belated to him! These are from a British program called The Smoke that he's on right now, where he's playing a firefighter who was injured badly in a fire who's trying to return to work.

Anyone seen the show? Jamie's also taken to Twitter to promote it the way every actor should promote their shows...

--- Up Up And Away - The Playlist shows off some new Man of Steel pics from the next issue of Entertainment Weekly, including that impressive shot of Henry Cavvil in his Supes costume there to the left, and also a pretty intense shot of Michael Shannon as Zod that's really reminding me of Arnold Schwarzenegger in Batman & Robin, which... well I don't think that's what they're going for.

--- Viva 90s - Earlier this week Nathaniel listed his top ten movies of the 1990s, go check it at The Film Experience, it's a great list. The 90s are hard for this sort of thing for me - it's when I came of age and I've got a lot of personal attachments to films, more so than other decades, so trying to sort out what's actually Great versus what I just love is tougher than other times, I think.

--- On Fire - Well this is a headline writ from my subconscious - "Jamie Bamber to star in Firefighting Drama." It's for the Sky channel in the UK, from one of the writers of that show Skins; it'll be eight episodes... for now, I suppose - that's how Brit TV works, right? They make a series and if it catches on, it gets a second, so on. Whatever - Jamie Bamber as a firefighter, y'all.

--- Deadites Alive - I did a happy dance when I saw a new review up over at Final Girl - Stacie takes on the Evil Dead remake! Actually, I like the thought of Stacie Takes On The Evil Dead. I wanna see Stacie slicing up demons with a chainsaw, dammit.

--- Furious Fast - Well I didn't see this one coming - James Wan, director of the first Saw film and the Insidious movies, has signed on to direct the seventh Fast slash Furious flick. I was gonna say this will be his first non-horror movie but that'd be forgetting that Kevin Bacon revenge thing (which I doubt he'd mind, that being forgotten).

--- Hang Man - Damn damn damn, I don't even want to write this because writing it legitimizes it as Really Happening - that Tarzan movie with Alexander Skarsgard and Jessica Chastain isn't happening, at least not any time soon, which equals never, probably. Boo. Now I'll never see Alex in a loincloth.

--- Tough Love - Joseph Gordon Levitt's directorial debut Don Jon (now sans Addiction) is coming out in mid-October, which seems kind of ridiculous - it's already screened at fests, why wait so damned long? Do they really expect Oscar traction? I wanna see JGL all greased and beefy, dammit.

--- Gun Slinger - I have no idea who's playing who in Jane Got a Gun anymore and I kind of don't even care now that Michael Fassbender and Lynne Ramsay have moved on along, but Roland Emmerich, who will always be Marlon in The Truman Show to me, has just signed on to play Natalie Portman's sloppy husband. I mean I'm surprised that Natalie isn't playing the husband role at this point.

--- Mann Up - DH has some details on what director Michael Mann is up to next, an Hong Kong cyber-thriller starring Chris Hemsworth - because obviously a movie set in HK would star that white man. Really though, can't you picture the way MM will shoot that city already? And everybody will orgasm over it even though it's entirely predictable.

This morning is literally the first time I've heard of a TNT show called Monday Mornings, but apparently it has our beloved Jamie Bamber on it and they got him into a shower on the last episode, so Mondays Mornings is on my good side. I mean it could be on my better side - the scene in question is tastefully PG to the point of puritanism. This is after all the man who gave us this. But we'll consider it a good first step. Anybody seen it?

(via) Apparently Jamie Bamber is on some show called Body of Proof - let me rephrase that: apparently there is a show called Body of Proof, and Jamie Bamber is apparently on this show. And while he's on this show, he's only just now decided to take off some of his clothes, even though this show, which apparently exists, has existed for several episodes with Jamie Bamber on it. I don't know. It defies all logic. You have Jamie bamber for five seconds, you get him out of his clothes! God, it ain't rocket science. Anyway at least things have straightened themselves out now. Next stop: dropping the towel!

What a coincidence! I was just looking at these pictures of Jamie Bamber and his glorious tank-top on his new show Outcasts over on the Beeb (prev post) when I see this news at EW, that he's reuniting with Battlestar's creator Ron Moore to do a show here in the US! It's called 17th Precinct and it's a cop show with a sci-fi spin, as they put it. Because the world needs another cop show, even another one with a sci-fi spin.


No, no complaints! Because this will be a cop show with a sci-fi spin that will also have Jamie Bamber and Jamie Bamber has what might be the world's most perfect body and presumably he will be forced to show it off, and that is enough. Maybe BSG-mate Tahmoh Penikett can join him and they can take showers together for forty-five minutes, end show. Why isn't anyone paying me for these ideas? They're gold!

I don't keep up with British television - hell I have a hard enough time keeping up with American television - but I guess Jamie Bamber, one-time Apollo of Battlestar Galactica and forever hot piece with the key to my "heart," isn't on their Law & Order spin-off anymore? Perhaps the spin-off isn't even on anymore, who knows. Nobody, that's who! Anyway he's now on something called Outcasts, which is a science-fiction drama that starts this upcoming Monday on the Beeb. And he's wearing a sweat-stained tank-top in it, therefore it has already won. (via)

--- And Gwen Makes Two - Them's your romantic pair in the new Spider-Man movie. As much as a re-boot seems silly so soon after Sam Raimi's films, there aren't many pairs I like as much as Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, so bring it on.

--- Meet At The Social - Sean T. Collins wrote up a couple of terrific posts on Fincher's The Social Network yesterday - first here, second here. I almost quoted the entirety of a long passage about the charges of sexism that've been leveled at the film from that first link here as yesterday's Quote of the Day because he hits the nail on the head. They seem really myopic to me, as if nobody's seeing the forest of assholes for the trees of dicks.

--- Mamma Wants A Slice - Also via Sean I found a link to a comic called Cockbone by Josh Simmons, which Sean named his third favorite comic of 2009, and it is truly one of the most horrifying things I've ever seen. Not Safe For Brains, much less work, you have been warned. Seriously. This thing is nightmare inducing. So of course since it's now online for free, as soon as I finished it I ran off to buy a copy. It's amazing. Thanks for the heads-up, Sean!

--- Zombies Popped - David O. Russell ain't got no time for Pride nor Prejudice nor Zombies! He's not going to direct that thing with Natalie Portman after all. Do you think any of these will get made?

--- Got Fear - AMC starts up their annual FearFest on the 18th and they've just announced what they're showing and I have to remind myself to get my DVR prepared with haste.

--- Wolverineier - I'd hoped that if Darren Aronofsky and Hugh Jackman reunited it'd be for a sequel to The Fountain, perhaps The Birdbath or The Futuristic Glass Sink. But no, they're just thinking they might make the second Wolverine movie together. I still haven't watched the supposed abomination that is the first, ya know. I've seen the naked shots, that's enough.

--- Samurai Spooks - Yesterday was Final Girl's Film Club for Onibaba, the celebrated 1964 Japanese horror film that I've been meaning to see for ages and still haven't seen, hence my lack of participation. But other people participated, and they did a far better job than I ever would anyhow. Go forth, see.

--- Bad Things, Sweetie - Glenn Dunks tells us why Jackie Weaver might get an Oscar nom for Animal Kingdom. She certainly fucking deserves one, but that's hardly ever been the most necessary factor.

--- And finally, Ron Moore, one of the dudes who made Battlestar Galactica - the recent awesome SyFy series, that is - is maybe going to make a remake of the 60s sci-fi-tinged Western television program The Wild Wild West, which starred Robert Conrad and Robert Conrad's extremely, obscenely tight pants and the myriad ways in which they'd find for Robert Conrad to bust out of his extremely obscenely tight pants. It's glorious.


I've devoted blog space to Conrad's expertly exploited assets on that show before; the boyfriend loved it when he was a kid and recently got the DVDs and so I've seen a whole lot of the show over the past couple years. It's fun stuff, and I could see what interests Moore about it, in a loose sense. I have no doubts his show will be very very different. Although there's nothing wrong with stuffing your male lead into some snug pants, Ron. I hope you know that. Oh who am I kidding, he gave us the greatest moment ever put on screen, of course he does.
