All My Pretty Precioussses

I think I'm hardly alone in stating the cold hard dead truth that the three Hobbit movies kinda sorta broke my desire to watch Tolkein's Middle-Earth on the big screen anymore -- I couldn't even tell you anything that happened in them at this point; they went right in one eye and out the other. That said I started watching the Prime series, I think just because it landed in a lull in my schedule, and there's been some fun stuff in it. I will give it this -- it looks very expensive. (And given that Bezos shelled out like a billion dollars for the rights I should fucking hope so.)

Anyway I wasn't really feeling much enthusiasm about Andy Serkis slipping into Peter Jackson's director's chair to make Lord of the Rings; The Hunt For Gollum, yet another big-screen adventure -- this one about the period in the story where Gollum (who else) had already found the ring but before Bilbo got to him and snatched away his Preciousssss -- even as names like Sir Ian and Elijah Wood and Lee Pace started circling a return to the franchise. To get to my belabored point, made even more belabored by the photo up top giving my game away, they've now announced that dreamboat Jamie Dornan will be replacing Viggo Mortensen as "Strider" aka the name his character went by before he embraced his princely panatloons and became the Aragorn we all came to know and love in the original trilogy.

God this is so much nerd shit I am barfing right now! I need to go chop some wood or something stat. Anyway gorgeous Jamie is always a yes. I don't even care. I will now be watching this damn movie. And that's before we even get to the other two names that just got cast in it -- the queen herself Kate Winslet will apparently be the film's female lead, playing a character named "Marigol" (this site theorizes that she's Smeagol's grandmother), while our beautiful blond boy Leo Woodall will be playing a cohort of Strider's named Halvard. Does this mean this movie will have a lot of Jamie Dornan and Leo Woodall running around together, all bearded and dirty and huddling beside fires for warmth??? Because that's the movie I'm writing in my head, you best damn believe it.

He's Giving Us Woodall

I never saw Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy because I have never given a fuck about those movies -- should I, as a noted Leo Woodall lover, bother? The above gif of him soaking wet in a white button-down cradling a puppy makes me think there may be something in it for me. In related ignorance, is anybody watching Leo's new series Vladimir with Rachel Weisz? Should I watch that? I can no longer make decisions for myself apparently, but earlier today I saw...

... this footage of Leo wanking in a bathroom stall and I decided that maybe I should prioritize Vladimir as well. I'll just have myself A Day of Woodall this upcoming weekend. Sounds like a better way to spend my time than thinking about our imminent Armageddon anyway. Sigh. Where was I? Oh right, Leo. Sweet Leo. Did you hear the rumor that Leo might be playing the younger version of Viggo Mortensen's character Aragorn née Stryder in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt For Gollum? That would be one way to make me watch yet another unnecessary Tolkein movie.

Good Morning, World

You could do worse than kicking off your Tuesday with Viggo Mortensen's perky behind, I'd wager. This shot is from a 1995 Spanish movie called Gimlet that is streaming for free on Plex -- he plays a creepy stalker, which seemed to be his M.O. before the Lord of the Rings movies made him into a hero. Of course that pendulum swung back around again once he started working with Cronenberg. Anyway, point being -- butt. It's early and that's enough.

Pics of the Day

The first two images from David Cronenberg's next movie The Shrouds have arrived thanks to some rag called  Cahiers du Cinéma (via) -- that's Vincent Cassel on the left of course but apparently that's Diane Kruger on the right? I don't even recognize her. Amazing what some short wavy hair will do. Click here for my previous post on this movie, which is about a man whose wife dies and "the incapacity to cope with the loss of a loved one." Sounds cheery! No word on a definitive release for thi syet but I'm pretty sure I remember hearing it's expected to premiere at Cannes? Cahiers having this first look makes perfect sense then.

Fresh Shrouds For Cronenberg

I know I saw something within the past few weeks that had Vincent Cassel saying something really shitty about something, but my brain has blocked the entire thing out and I am choosing not to remember it right now so I can not be miserable for the rest of the day. I'm sure one of you will remind me in the comments and I will rightly feel crappy about giving the man a pass for a post, oh well. I have felt crappy for many crappy things and today will not be the last day that happens. Anyway! Vincent Cassel is starring in David Cronenberg's next movie -- that we already knew. But we didn't have more details, and we didn't have the news that broke today (via) that it would also star Vincent's old Cronenberg-Movie-Buddy Viggo Mortensen. No big surprise there -- if David Cronenberg is turning on a movie camera Viggo is not far off. Here are those fresh details though:

"In less than a week, David Cronenberg will be shooting his latest film The Shrouds in Toronto. Diane Kruger will star alongside Vincent Cassel in Cronenberg’s upcoming sci-fi film. We can now also add another stalwart actor to the cast, none other than Viggo Mortensen... Cronenberg has mentioned that Shrouds is part of the aborted Netflix project we had previously reported on. Supposedly, the streaming giant got cold feet after reading the second episode...

“It’s the story of a man who loses his wife. It’s about the incapacity to cope with the loss of a loved one,” Cassel told The Guardian. “I never thought he had such confidence in me and I’m really flattered. I told him, ‘David, honestly, I have no idea how I’m going to play this.’ And he said that’s exactly why he chose me.” Cronenberg told IndieWire while at 2022 Cannes that The Shrouds will take place in a world where people can watch their deceased relatives decaying in real-time."

That bit about Netflix freaking out about the second episode and backing out is so annoying -- come on, Netflix! You signed up for a David Cronenberg project! WTF did you think you'd get, tea parties and scones? More like tea-bagging and scabs, baby! And we wouldn't have it any other way.

Everything You Ever Need To Know About Life...

 ... you can learn from:

Caprice: What was that all about?
Saul: Just another epiphany.
Art triumphs once again.

Indeed art has triumphed once again as I haven't stopped thinking about David Cronenberg's Crimes of the Future since it came out back in June -- here was my review in case you missed it. Granted what I think about is often that jump scare slash punchline where Kristen Stewart pops out of nowhere all of a sudden like an enthusiastically sexy chihuahua. But that's a hell of thing to be haunted by! This movie is very funny though, and I kid as well -- the movie as a whole really has infected my brain. And while I do prefer Peter Srtickland's Flux Gourmet, its surprise companion piece on the body and art's invasion therein, I have a lot of love for Crimes too. Be gay, do Crimes!

Anyway I'm bringing Crimes up today, seemingly out of nowhere, because the movie is hitting blu-ray in a week! So if you haven't pre-ordered a copy already you can do so here. Admittedly this release feels a little bare-bones -- I could see a beautiful Criterion edition in our future... as long as "our future" isn't the 'future" of Crimes of the Future anyway, because I think blu-rays would be the last thing on our minds in that timeline. Not when we'd be so distracted grafting ears all over our body, and all. I don't know how you prioritize or schedule such things. "Oh sorry I can't make it to that screening -- I'm getting that finger sewn onto my forehead." The future is weird!

Back to Back, Sacroiliac, Spineless Movement

I think what hits you first is the silence. When you think about David Cronenberg films I think you first think of big things -- big slimy things bursting out of places where big slimy things should never have burst out of. Or into. You think of BrundleFlys and torso-slits and Jeremy Irons filled gang-bangs. Of that way Stephen McHattie's face just hangs off of him when Viggo Mortensen shot him through it in A History of Violence.

What you don't necessarily remember, or I never do until I'm sitting down to watch another one of Cronenberg's movies, is the diabolical silence. And the slowness. The purposefully glacial pace. The way it's all slightly affected, stilted, forcing you to lean in and do a lot of work yourself to meet the movie on its bizarre, singular wavelength.

It's been a full eight years since I needed to reacquaint myself with that ever determined tone of Dave's -- cold and hot, goofy and dead serious all at once. A whirlwind of contrasts so bleak and magnificently their own that it is its own state of mind -- he has, after all, become his own descriptor. And since you do get used to his movies with repeat viewings -- their maddening rhythms become familiar, or as familiar as a twitching gay sex bug with Julian Sands face stretched over it can ever become anyway.

And so it's only really when a new one comes along that you're reminded. Oh right. That's what he means. He doesn't not ask a lot of us. His movies are difficult, stubborn, off-putting. Ambitiously alienating. He wants to reach himself into your belly and tug at what unnerves you. To tug and to caress, to be intimate with your under-parts. David Cronenberg wants to make you feel funny in all kinds of funny ways, babe, and bless the heavens and stars for that.

This experience can sometimes make one more dismissive of a Cronenbergian dip the first go through, but as I have learned from the past -- hello there, Cosmopolis -- that way tomfoolery lay. Cuz the thing is these movies shove at you, slap you around, and then lick your bruises. They lay eggs in your brains and hatch only after. A David Cronenberg picture takes time, patience, space and a cool wetness for their moss to spread.

Which is all to say I kind of had no idea what I could write about his latest deliberate anomaly called Crimes of the Future after seeing it the one time a few weeks ago, and I'm clearly still at a loss for particulars six paragraphs in. The film stars our muse Viggo as the performance artist Saul Tenser (yet another perfect Cronenberg movie name) who is able to grow aberrant organs, only to then have then them tattooed and removed by his sexual and artistic life-partner Caprice (Léa Seydoux, fitting into the smirking whisper aesthetic just right). But no, this ability only makes him mildly special -- the world in which these characters live is not our own, but some future weirdness where everybody's half-tumor with legs, so much so that there are governmental agencies entirely devoted to such things.

Enter Kristen Stewart, earning her standard-round-these-parts kudos as Timlin, a buttoned-up agent of one such place -- and if you've ever seen a Cronenberg movie then you can already picture what the offices look like, barren places with old-fashioned filing cabinets and spider-nests in the overhangs. She and her partner Wippet (yes Wippet), played by outstanding Cronenberg regular Don McKellar, sneak around the fringes of Saul's world sniffing at the weirdness, taking little licks before admitting that they're of course way more fucked up and perverted than anybody.

It's all very slow and grotesque and old-school Cronenberg in the best sense, and it will probably, should probably, stop you dead in your tracks. Scratch scars. It will demand effort, and a double to triple dipping, is my point -- I feel as if writing about a David Cronenberg movie with just one watch is for fools. I can't do it. I mean I just did it, but did I? Really? I guess what I mean to say is I don't want to do it. I don't want to write about it yet -- I just want to see and hear and live in the movie again. So y'all go see Crimes of the Future, see it several damn times, and make up your own minds. And I'll be here doing the same.

I've Seen the Future (Trailer), Baby...

As promise-threatened yesterday with that super-ooky other poster for the film that I shared the first trailer for David Cronenber's Crimes of the Future has arrived and this shit is hardcore -- it's like the past twenty years that DC spent not making Body Horror Movies all knotted up and twisted inside his intestines and this beautiful freak-fest just up and burst out one day through his belly-button, fully formed and thick with mess. Oh my god I am so excited my knees are buckling.

Starring David's favorite pervert Viggo Mortensen alongside the ever-game Kristen Stewart and Léa Seydoux and hey-ohhh who's that hot bearded boy that we see for a split second there...

... oh right, Scott fuckin' Speedman is in this too, huzzah! Crimes of the Future will play Cannes and then it will hit U.S. theaters on June 3rd -- dude that is less than a month from now! As much as I have enjoyed many of the movies that Cronenberg's made over the past two decades I couldn't be happier that he went back to his familiar stomping grounds and decided to throw it all at us at once in one big deviant nightmare -- when your name has become an adjective it means something to people, I am glad he could embrace it again and show us whatcha still got, baby! My man.

Poster Crimes

Yesterday I was showing the Hostel: Part II poster that hangs beside my bed to a friend -- you know, the one that's just a wall of meat -- acting like I was a big tough man with that the first thing I stare at every morning... and here comes David Cronenberg with the poster for his latest Crimes of the Future blowing that lil' wall-of-meat right outta the water. Ugh!!! Neon shared this on Twitter along with the news that we will have the trailer for this movie tomorrow! I will surely share that the second it's here!

New Cronenberg Body Horror y'all!!!

Say Yes To Crimes

Here on the day when Cannes announces its 2022 line-up, which we've known will include David Cronenberg's Crimes to the Future -- his first feature film in nearly a decade, starring Viggo Mortensen, Léa Seydoux, and Kristen f'ing Stewart -- for some time, Neon went and teased us with the first look teaser trailer at the movie, and I consider myself teased! All of my tingly bits teased but good. Watch:

Full on Body Horror, baby!!! You could almost say it's been 23 years since he touched that stuff with eXistenZ in '99 (although there are whispers of it here and there ever since, of course). They say it'll be out for us normies (i.e. people not having the good luck to go to Cannes) in June, so smear some liquid of yourself on that part of the calendar as a reminder.

Okay that out of the way -- now let's talk about me. Me! I'm still sick with the lingering effects of COVID (talk about Body Horror) so don't take this post as an indicator that I'm up and blogging again. It's going to be another quiet day here on the site unfortunately. I'm really over it, I am ready to be back out in the world, but I'm just not there yet. I tried to give it a go last night, to do something normal, and it knocked me on my ass. At least one more day of rest it is, I guess. Hope you're all well and more importantly missing me. I'll be back louder and more obnoxious than ever soon enough, no worries.

Which is Hotter?

Netflix is dropping a new Texas Chainsaw movie on February 18th and after the poster and trailer dropped last week (watch it here) a bunch of Horror Film Twitter seemed to take it as a challenge to rank and/or re-watch a bunch of the Texas Chainsaw movies. And weirdly, as much as I adore Tobe Hooper's original, this is a franchise I'd seen very little of? Until this week I'd only seen four of the nine films -- besides the original I'd seen its sequel, and then I'd seen the 2003 remake and its sequel. In both instances the diminishing returns had turned me off keeping going with the franchise, so I'd never seen the two films from the 90s...

... which famously have Viggo Mortensen (in the third) and Matthew McConaughey and Renee Zellweger (in the fourth) -- nor have I seen the 2013 3D film or Leatherface from 2017. Anyway last night, inspired by everybody's talk, I did go back and watch the 1990 film (called Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III) and the 1994 film (called The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation) and I tweeted some about it...

... although not as much as I expected to, because that third movie is some soul-slashing dreck and put me in a most foul mood indeed. The fourth film, the one with McConaughey & Zellweger on the other hand, is a hoot -- nobody leaves any scenery un-masticated, but besides that it's got an actually funny script with some swell zingers, and it's mostly not just a tired retread of the original's beat-of-beat, which is what kills the Viggo movie dead. Next Gen eventually falls prey to some of that -- does every single one of these have to lead to a dinner scene with the kooky meat-lovin' clan??? -- but it zigs more than it zags. Anyway I saved the important question for last...

Good Morning, World

Been awhile since I checked in on Scott Speedman -- been so long I didn't even know he had started an Instagram account, but he did, and yesterday he shared this photo (under the auspices that Drew Barrymore shared that photo with her audience on her talk show -- way to deflect the need-for-thirst, Scott), and for this we are grateful no matter the circuitous route. Anyway I was about to be like, "What the hell's Scott been up to?" but thankfully I run a movie-blog and I have posted myself what he's up to, but just forgot. He's in the next David Cronenberg movie! A new version of one of DC's earliest films Crimes of the Future -- I actually think all it might share will be a title, but we'll find out soon enough since IMDb has it listed as being in "post-production" when I don't know if I even knew it had shot. Anyway other names in the cast are Cronenberg regular Viggo Mortensen alongside Kristen Stewart and Léa Seydoux -- this is one sexy cool cast y'all.

Everything You Ever Need To Know About Life...

... you can learn from:

A Dangerous Method (2011)

Otto Gross: It seems to me the measure of the true perversity of the human race, that one of its very few reliably pleasurable activities should be the subject of so much hysteria and repression.

David Cronenberg's film A Dangerous Method came out ten years ago today! It premiered first at the Venice Film Festival and then hit Telluride, and Toronto, and Zurich, and then on October 5th it played at the New York Film Festival which is where I saw it and also where I did one of the very few (very very few) interviews I have ever done, with Michael Fassbender himself. You can read it here, if you so desire. I was a nervous wreck, which is why I don't do interviews; I can hardly hold conversations with people I've known for twenty years for god's sake.

Anyway I definitely haven't seen A Dangerous Method in ten years, since that NYFF, I should absolutely give it another spin -- I liked it fine at the time, but maybe it'll have grown in my estimation looking back a decade on. Cronenberg always has something to offer. Anybody seen it recently?

Future Filling Out Fast

This was a fast update on yesterday's news! Yesterday I reported that David Cronenberg was officially back, set to direct a movie called Crimes of the Future this summer with his boy Viggo Mortensen in Greece, and today we have confirmation along with many more details thanks to Deadline. Firstly, more cast -- it will so-star Léa Seydoux, Kristen Stewart, and (swoon) Scott Speedman. I love Scott Speedman but I never expected to see him in a David Cronenberg movie! I am thinking his Canadian-ness got his pretty pretty foot in the door.

Moving along I wondered yesterday if Crimes of the Future (2021) might not be a remake of his 1970 film which has the exact same name, but it sounds like it is not... well save one plot-point from the older film I read about in my research yesterday. Here's what Deadline is saying about the new film:

"This is the first original sci-fi script by Cronenberg since 1999’s eXistenZ. It sounds just as ambitious, taking a deep dive into the not-so-distant future where humankind is learning to adapt to its synthetic surroundings. This evolution moves humans beyond their natural state and into a metamorphosis, altering their biological makeup. While some embrace the limitless potential of trans-humanism, others attempt to police it. Either way, “Accelerated Evolution Syndrome”, is spreading fast. Saul Tenser is a beloved performance artist who has embraced Accelerated Evolution Syndrome, sprouting new and unexpected organs in his body. Along with his partner Caprice, Tenser has turned the removal of these organs into a spectacle for his loyal followers to marvel at in real time theatre. But with both the government and a strange subculture taking note, Tenser is forced to consider what would be his most shocking performance of all."

The whole "organ regrowth" thing is apparently in the 1970 film (which I have yet to watch, even though I own a copy), although there's a whole plot about a plague wiping out all the adult women on Earth and the organ thing being a fetishized replacement for birth, which... well it sure sounds like David Cronenberg. As does this new plot! And "Saul Tenser" is such a Cronenberg character name. Couldn't be more giddy about all of this. Kristen Stewart too! Getcha freak on, KStew!

Future Crimes Points Past-ward

Happy day, as Viggo Mortensen's rumblings from earlier this year have proven founded -- David Cronenberg is indeed shooting a new movie this year! And we have more details than "It will star me, Viggo Mortensen," now! Via here (via here) comes word that the film will be called Crimes of the Future and it will be shot in Greece -- the interesting thing here is that Cronenberg made a movie with that same title in the year 1970; is he remaking one of his own films a la Hitchcock and Haneke? (Not bad company to be in.) We're not sure it's that, but given the use of the same title it's probably safe to assume there will be some connection, and here's what the 1970 film is about, via IMDb's summary:

"Crimes of the Future details the wanderings of Tripod (Mlodzik), sometime director of a dermatological clinic called the House of Skin, who is searching for his mentor, the mad dermatologist Antoine Rouge. Rouge has disappeared following a catastrophic plague resulting from cosmetic products, which has killed the entire population of sexually mature women. Tripod joins a succession of organisations including Metaphysical Import-Export and the Oceanic Podiatry Group, and meets various individuals and groups of men who are trying to adjust themselves to a defeminized world. One man parodies childbirth by continually growing new organs which are removed from his body. Eventually Tripod comes upon a group of paedophiles which is holding a 5 year-old girl, and they urge him to mate with her. He senses the presence of Antoine Rouge."

Hooray, a plague! Anyway I've never seen the 1970 version of Crimes of the Future (I've never seen the 2021 version either, obviously) but I just realized I do own a copy of it, as it's included on Arrow's blu-ray called "David Cronenberg's Early Works" which I bought last year in one of my blu-ray buying fits and put on a shelf and never picked back up. There's a lot of those on my shelves! Anyway now I will pick it back up! You see, I was just investing in my future, namely this moment right now. I will report back -- if you've seen the film tell me about it!

Quote of the Day

“The thing that I’ve never understood about Cronenberg is that he’s had almost a half a century of making movies, and many really good movies. He’s clearly one of the masters, right? Living masters. And yet this is a man who, every time out, struggles for years, usually, to raise minimal financing for his movies. Which are never really expensive. He always comes in on or under budget, on or before time on shoots. He doesn’t waste money. His movies don’t lose money. Sometimes they make some money. He’s incredibly reliable, professionally and creatively. Why should it be so difficult? I don’t understand. Why has David Cronenberg never, ever been nominated by the Academy for writing or directing a movie? I mean, that’s inexplicable to me, but such is life.”

Well I don't remember the last time I gave the same person two "Quote of the Day" posts two days in a row -- maybe when Robert Pattinson couldn't stop talking about all the actual masturbating he's done on-screen -- but I gotta hand it to Viggo Mortensen, who's using the press rounds for his own directorial-debut Falling this week to sing the praises left right and in your fucking face of his friend and three-time director David Cronenberg. I suppose the fact that Cronenberg plays a role in his movie -- delightfully, a proctologist -- and the fact that as Viggo said in yesterday's post the two of them plan on working together again later this year in a new film from the master himself, helps the subject keep coming up. The quote above is via his chat with UpRoxx right here. And you keep loving David and I'll keep posting, Viggo!

Quote of the Day

So I guess Viggo Mortensen's directorial debut called Falling, which I briefly mentioned back in September when I first saw the words "David Cronenberg is playing a proctologist," is hitting streaming on February 5th -- the movie has Viggo playing gay, which sounds fun; I will drop the trailer down below at the bottom of this post. I've very much been feeling the need to revisit Viggo's three-movie collab with Cronenberg as of late (A History of Violence, Eastern Promises, and A Dangerous Method) and it looks like that threesome's on the verge of foursome status (ooh la la) as Vigs says in a new GQ interview the two are maybe probably about to film a new movie this summer! And even better Cronenberg's allowing usage of the long gestating words "Body Horror" to boot:

GQ: Are you two in talks for another collaboration sometime soon?

Viggo: Yes, we do have something in mind. It's something he wrote a long time ago, and he never got it made. Now he's refined it, and he wants to shoot it. Hopefully, it'll be this summer we'll be filming. I would say, without giving the story away, he's going maybe a little bit back to his origins.

GQ:  So, body-horror type stuff?

Viggo: Yeah, it's very interesting. It's almost like a strange film noir story. It's disturbing and it's good, I think. But since his origins, he's obviously developed in terms of technique and self-assurance as a director.

This would be Cronenberg's first movie in seven years, since Maps to the Stars in 2014, so we're seriously overdue this. Then you add in the fact that the last movie Cronenberg made that could be described as "Body Horror" (a hot-as-hell horror genre of the moment that he basically invented, as far as I'm concerned) would be eXistenz all the way back in 1999...

... and you could say we're SERIOUSLY SERIOUSLY overdue this. I mean I have enjoyed his son Brandon's two films (Antiviral and especially Possessor) that've borrowed heavily off his last name, but it's about time the original violator of the new flesh came back and showed these kids how it's done. Anyway here's that Falling trailer:

Jason's Ass Makes Promises He Might Keep

There are so many similar photoshoots of Jason Statham looking like the butchest bitch in the prison yard that I can't keep up. Have I posted these exact shots before? I don't know. I've posted plenty just like them if not, but I'm using this here pair today in order to direct you over to The Film Experience where I've shared the latest news on Mr. Jason's career path, which seems to be taking him towards some of Viggo Mortensen's old scraps. I wouldn't be angry if they wrestled over it. Now that would be a movie.

Everything You Ever Need To Know About Life...

... you can learn from:

A History of Violence (2005)

Mick: Yeah. She used to have these crazy goddamn
dreams where instead of her boyfriend, I was some kind
of demented killer. I woke up one night,
she stuck a goddamn fork in my shoulder.
Tom: You're kidding me.
Mick: Nope. I'm spurting blood. She's sitting
there crying, going, 'Baby, I love you, I love you.'
Tom: So, what happened? You broke up with her, right?
Mick: No, I married her.
Mick: Hey, it lasted 6 years. Nobody's perfect, Tom.
Tom: I guess not.

A happy 15 to David Cronenberg's A History of Violence, released on this day in 2005. I really have to go back and re-watch this, I haven't seen it since 2005 and I have a feeling I'll appreciate it more now than I did at the time -- at the time I was kind of annoyed that Cronenberg seemed to be stepping away from the horror genre, but now, in 2020, I think I'll just be happy to see any Cronenberg at all. Dude hasn't directed anything in six years! Please David, make another movie! Although...

... we will supposedly be seeing Cronenberg on-screen playing Viggo's proctologist in Viggo's directorial debut called Falling, which also, on top of all that, has Viggo playing gay. (The film played at TIFF and I think got pretty bad reviews.) Anyway what are y'all's thoughts on A History of Violence? I know it was beloved by many at the time and my tepid opinion was an outlier, so please, take to the comments to tell me I was wrong.

Good Morning, World

.
I feel as if I am going to have a lot to say about this movie at a point in the future when I've had more time to think about it, but last night I was introduced to the 1995 film The Passion of Darkly Noon from the director Philip Ridley (who also directed 1990's terrific and also singularly strange The Reflecting Skin, a movie I have had words about here on the site before and which also got a nice blu-ray release recently) and starring Brendan Fraser, Ashley Judd, and Viggo Mortensen... oh and also Grace Zabriskie! We can't...
.
.
... forget her. Anyway I was introduced to Darkly Noon (lol that is Brendan's character's name, because of course it is) thanks to the brand new 2K restored blu-ray that Arrow Films is putting out at the end of this month, and I can't imagine this movie ever looked this vivid and crisp and frankly (I say this as a compliment) psychotic as it does on this disc in the 25 years it's been available...

... so I recommend, if you're curious or if you've been struck by the Darkly Noon bat to the face before, well I recommend you pick up a copy. And maybe then, when it comes out, I'll have gathered my thoughts. For now let's just enjoy the simple pleasures of watching 1995 Brendan Fraser climb naked out of a bed after the jump...
