I don't know if y'all are prepared for how swoonworthy George MacKay is in the upcoming new adaptation of Sense and Sensibility that is coming from Blue Jean director Georia Oakley next month -- yes I've already seen the movie and he plays dreamy Edward opposite Daisy Edgar-Jones and (the real discovery for me) Esmé Creed-Miles as the sisters Dashwood and George's stock with people who lose their minds over a dashing man in a puffy shirt is really about to skyrocket. Like ever. Like now, actually! Because tonight's the night I'm seeing the brand new restoration of Ken Russell's The Devils, a moment I've dreamt of for decades. Actual decades! If you missed the trailer for this one I posted it previously right here -- I adore this blasphemous mental breakdown of a movie and am just about popping out of my pants with excitement right now. Anyway since the last time I posted about it The Powers That Be (cough Warner Brothers cough and sigh) did release more news on the theatrical release of this masterpiece, which will only be one week long and begin on October 15th -- if you're in NYC it's playing Film at Lincoln Center the literal second that NYFF finishes and tickets are on sale this very minute. As for the rest of this week my schedule is still pretty random, with screenings in the morning and early evening, so you'll see me when you see me. And I've already got a heap of NYFF reviews locked and loaded too so please do stay tuned. Movies! How awesome are fucking movies y'all??
The moment that the first beefcaked-up photos from David Corenswet's football bio-pic Mr. Irrelevant appeared online back in April I knoew this was a movie I was going to be psoting about more when the time came -- well tick tock motherfuckers. The trailer popped up over the weekend and it's exactly the sort of soppy sentimental thing we expected, but damn if David doesn't look incredible anyway.
And I feel less inclined to side-eye this movie than Sports Bio-pics of the past because -- these movies just aren't made very often anymore? The trailer gives away what seems like everything and this is extremely old-fashioned shit, and there's something kind of endearing about that. I really don't even have a warm place in my heart for any esteemed movies of this genre but I'm glad this exists in 2026. Hell if only so we get to see Superman bouncing in those little shorts. Okay now it's getting ridiculous -- did all of the PR people get together and conspire to make me a harried ball of overwhelm today? First it was Godzilla Minus Zero, then it was Artificial, and now in the span of an hour a third trailer aimed straight at my interests has dropped -- the teaser for M. Night Shyamalan's Remain starring one Jake Gyllenhaal! This is an inexplicable collab between Night and the writer Nicholas Sparks of all people so I have no idea what to expect... well except what this teaser tells us anyway, which a lot. Including...
... Jake apparently being shirtless for half of it??
But this movie isn't out until February so it's the furthest away and, given how much I'm already dealing with pshycologically and emotionally, I'm just setting this one on the back-burner for now. Watch:
It's barely 11am the morning after a long holiday weekend and I am already spiralling into chaos -- they're throwing too much at me this morning! Literally seconds after I posted the longer trailer for NYFF World Premiere Godzilla: Minus One my inbox lit up with the teaser trailer for NYFF World PremiereArtificial from Luca Guadagnino! And it's everything I needed it to be, this teaser -- Gay Villain Sam Altman's Twink Terrorist Compound is all I needed to see. Luca has made the movie he needed to make. Now feed it to me! (Also I don't think I knew that Damon Albarn had done the music and to this Ravenous-score-fanatic that's got me extra tingly!)
Artificial opens in theaters on Christmas. This and Werwulf! What a day!
I am seeing Godzilla Minus Zero in just eighteen -- EIGHTEEN -- days when it World Premieres at the New York Film Festival and as if I wasn't already wetting myself they went and unloaded a longer trailer for the film than we'd seen previously (click here to see the first teaser) and I AM SO EXCITED. There is a moment mid-trailer when the aspect ratio changes that straight up had me levitating out of my office chair. No new sightings of NYC in this trailer (we saw the Statue of Liberty in the teaser) but they do let on that Godzilla has a foe showing up -- who do you think it will be? You can't really say that the first film in this series was necessarily "realistic" like Nolan did with his Batman movies but it was more realistic than they usually are, so I'm curious which of Godzilla's foes fit into that framework. Which is to say I would be very surprised to see twin lounge-singer sprites serenading a gigantic moth just yet. But who knows! Director Takashi Yamazaki no doubt has the freedom at this point to do whatever the hell he wants to. Let's hope that works out like it did last time!

I keep meaning to at the very least make myself a mental list of the movies set to come out this fall that I personally am most excited to see -- because of course me me and more me -- cuz otherwise it's chaos and white noise and I have no idea what's happening half the time. Even better would be a list here on the site but that would take me being able to focus for longer than ten minutes and... that's just not been possible lately. (Have you SEEN the state of the world? My god.)
(Julio!) Anyway I bring this up because two of the movies that would make it onto said list have come up this morning -- the first was Luca Guadagnino's Artificial which just dropped news of its world premiete at NYFF on October 5th. And here's the second -- the teaser trailer for La bola negra (The Black Ball), the extremely gay sounding new film from Spanish directors Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi which grabbed our attention first when it premiered at Cannes to extremely gay notices. Here I'll just let you watch the trailer and see for yourselves:
I've never seen any of Javier Calvo & Javier Ambrossi's Spanish T.V. series (Paquita Salas and Veneno) but from what I understand they're popular and extremely queer, kind of heirs to Almodovar -- the fact that Penelope Cruz is in their new movie only seems to cement that status for me, but if y'all who know of their work wanna enlighten me more have at it. I'm purposefully keeping myself ignorant (full stop, what's new) of specifics on La bola negra as I do with most movies I know I want to see these days -- I look forward to going in empty-brained and being surprised. But even in my ignorance I'm extremely excited about this one. (The fact that I do know that Cruz and Glenn Close and my beloved Julio Torres are in it, alongside a swath of extremely hot Spanish guys, isn't hurting.) So when will we all be able to see it? It is playing TIFF but I'm not going to TIFF -- thankfully Netflix is dropping the film ("theatrically") on October 16th. Gimme!
Although I have a love-hate relationship with Zack Snyder's movies I think it's a little less contentious than most -- I loved Dawn of the Dead and 300 unabashedly, and Watchmen and Sucker Punch both have pieces worth defending. If I had to watch hetero-bombast I always preferred his more Kinsey-middle version to Michael Bay's! Anyway it wasn't until he waded into the swamp of making really shitty Superman movies (Henry Cavill's pecs excused) that I became more and more exasperated by him -- yes I have seen "his" cut of Justice League and yes it still sucks. Anyway he seems to've wanted a change as well so we've been keeping track of his next movie The Last Photographfor awhile now -- okay mainly because Snyder has been posting beefcake-y photos of his leading men ...
... Stuart Martin and (out gay!) Fra Fee on social media for awhile, but still. It had me curious! Anyway the movie's got a trailer today and as you can see by these gifs Snyder hasn't lost any of his ability to objectify beautiful men. This is why he and I will probably never be over! Watch:
The Last Photograph is set to premiere at TIFF soon -- in it Martin plays an ex-DEA agent who enlists the aid of a "junkie photographer" (Fee) to find the kidnapped children of a murdered diplomat in South America. I don't know what to make of the politics and exoticist issues on display in this trailer -- let's hope Snyder has delivered something thoughtful and not jingoistic. One can dream! Are any of you watching the show The Shards, Ryan Murphy's adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis' book? I am watching it but it's sort of a hate-watch -- I think all of the young actors who make up the main cast are fairly awful. (How is that nepo-baby supposed to be Richard Gere's son??? I refuse to believe they are even related.) That said the older actors playing the adults on the show are pretty much the exact opposite, a delight to watch to a tee; I would much rather be watching a show about them. And when Glee actor Dot-Marie Jones showed up in an episode that I watched this past weekend playing a porn director that went triply true. So much fun. And seeing her also reminded me that I saw and loved a horror movie called Breeder earlier this year at Tribeca that she's the villain in -- and well whaddya know the trailer for Breeder just dropped today and who do you think...

Learning about a new movie starring George MacKay is always cause to stop dead in one's tracks and find out more, as he's easily slid into the role of one of our most intersting and daring young actors working today -- this thing I am just finding out about is called Mission and it reunites Georgie-boy with the director of his 2013 (he was just a wee babe he was) movie For Those in Peril, which I have never seen but which co-stars Kate Dickie and so I probably should seek that one out, ehh? Anybody seen it and know? Anyway Mission got a teaser trailer this week and...
... it looks good! Looks like a good role for Mr. MacKay, it does. He plays a young man who finds out he's dying and decides to go rampaging through life while he still can -- it co-stars Rosy McEwen, who I've dug ever since The Alienist but after that went on to make the very fine horror flicks Harvest and Rabbit Trap with Dev Patel.She has one hell of an interesting and watchable face -- just like George actually. Anyway the reason I just heard about this movie is it's playing at the Edinburgh Film Festival in the next few days so I guess we'll hear more after that. I wanna see it though! Let's make that happen.
Between the just-dropped trailer for Josh Hartnett's new Netflix series Below and my review of the Fantasia horror movie No Rest For the Wicked (also set in an Atlantic adjacent fishing village) I feel like I'm using the phrase "Sweater Porn" a lot this week -- but then I think about how horrifically hot this summer has been and how disgustingly muggy it's been this week specifically and thoughts of the sweet freeing embrace of Autumn are bound to be drowning my subconscious right now. Sweater Porn is just leaking out of me!! Pouring more like -- I mean look at Josh there! Big Burly Dad Josh -- you love to see it. Anyway this show is about some sort of aquatic nightmare creature attacking a Newfoundland town and all of those words, along with the Hartnett of it, are ones that hit my happy triggers. You even see Stranger Things star Charlie Heaton's bum in the trailer -- I mean he does nothing for me but I figure that will be a plus for one of you perverts. I just hope that Widow's Bay hasn't knocked the wind out of this show's sails, since we only want good stuff for Josh. Anyway we'll see when Below lands on Netflix on October 8th; here's that trailer:
I know that calling it Dune Part Three will make it feel like a closed trilogy more but I really miss this thing being called Dune:Messiah -- it's just a more interesting title. Do I think that because it might irritate Christians? I'll never tell! (Yes I will -- of course that's the reason.) Anyway the trailer for Dune Whatever has dropped today and surely you've seen it elsewhere -- I just wanted, nay needed, to make that gif of Robert Pattinson so I figured I might as well post the damn thing. That said I am excited about this -- I liked both of the previous movies a lot, even if I maintain against the hype that Austin Butler was terrible in the second one. I have total faith that RPatz will make for a serious upgrade in the anti-Atreidas establishment.
Dune Whatever (am I just calling it that now?) is out December 18th.
One of my favorite movies from this year's Sundance is hitting some theaters this upcoming weekend and I'm just now realizing I have not shared this information yet! The movie's called Night Nurse and it's a perverse little psycho-sexual thriller that feels like it's floating in a ketamine daze -- right up my alley then. I called it "deliciousness for sickos" in my review and as a self-proclaimed sicko myself (I'm not just the President, but I'm also a member) I think you should take my word. The movie's about a charismatic older gentleman in a retirement community who causes the nurses to fall under his predatory spell, and one in particular who goes right off the deep end -- anyway I don't think you should know much more about it but the trailer is below if you're so inclined. It's only hitting a couple of theaters in NYC and LA this weekend but click here and you can see if/when it will spread from there. That said it's a very small movie without any recognizable names so my guess is this'll be on VOD before you can say "rectal thermometer" ten times fast. Seek it out!
As if unloading that slutty milk campaign on us Charles Melton admirers wasn't enough for this sweaty end-of-June Tuesday afternoon, Neon has just now unleashed the first full-length trailer for Nicolas Winding Refn's Her Private Hell as well -- and as glimped in the first teaser as well as yesterday's sweaty torso poster it appears to be a real "Imagine Charles Melton in a fetish, any fetish, and voila you got it" fest. Leather, uniforms, you name it Refn is gearing Chuck up for our visual benefits.
I still have no idea what the fuck this movie is about and oh my god I do not care in the slightest -- as with anything Refn has made in the past decade and a half it's all about the vibes and I subscribe to these vibes. A lot of people don't! And I feel bad for them! There are shots in this trailer that made my eyes pop out of my head.
Literally. My eyes are sitting on my desk right now, I am typing this blind. Anyway this movie was not loved at Cannes but that only made me more excited -- his two T.V. series (Too Old To Die Young and Copenhagen Cowboy) were similarly divisive and I loved every second of them. I would put Refn in alongside Robert Eggers and Wes Anderson as filmmakers who've alienated a lot of people by going off the deep ends with their respective styles but I'm so here for it from every single one of them. Art, baby!

Even though the movie's not out until Christmas. By now I'm sure you've heard that Criterion just dropped a bomb on us that only Slim Pickens could ride -- a massive box-set of every Stanley Kubrick movie on 4K, plus some shorts, plus all of those special features they're known for, will be landing on our heads come October 20th. You can pre-order it here if you're a person for whom money is no object (in which case hey there why don't you scooch a lil' closer, new best friend) although obviously I recommend you wait for one of the big 50% off sales that land in the fall at Criterion's own site or at Barnes & Noble. Because the price right now is four hundred and eighty bucks and goodness me that's a lot of money. Especially if you're a collector like me who already owns most of these movies in some format or another. (I suppose y'all who don't need or want 4K should be keeping your eyes on my eBay though because I will be buying this set so I will be selling off those discs at some point in the next few months.) But even if you're waiting to buy the set check the long long long list of specifics at the link -- this is really a staggering set; Criterion proving they're the gold standard yet again. I don't know why I thought I was embargoed with regards to sharing my opinion on Olivia Wilde's upcoming comedy The Invite -- which stars her and Seth Rogen as a married couple who invite their neighbor couple, played by Ed Norton and Penelope Cruz, over for dinner and, uhh, it goes wild -- but I just realized now that I am not embargoed, and so I feel the need to immediately shout from the rooftops that this movie is the funniest movie I have seen in a movie theater (or not in a movie theater) in a very long time. I honestly haven't openly unreservedly guffawed inside a theater like this movie had me going in I don't know how long -- I honestly don't remember the last time. I'm not tasked with writing a review so I'll probably leave it this simple -- go see this movie, go make this movie a hit, so we can get more smart silly adult comedies in movie theaters please. Below is the first look at the film from A24 -- it's out in "select theaters" next Friday and then wide on July 10th. With this and Gregg Araki's I Want Your Sex coming later in July Olivia Wilde has officially completely flipped around that rough patch her career was going through circa the Harry Styles mess -- good for her.

I already shared a long trailer for the forthcoming Cape Fear series on Apple+ right here -- that one was good and all but I much prefer this sixteen seconds of simplicity they dropped today. Patrick Wilson, half naked, lifting weights, sold! The first two episodes premiere on Friday. And honestly if they're just this for two hours I'll watch the whole damn thing.
