Super Mario Galaxy Movie in 200 Words or Less

My boyfriend and I have a running joke about how lesbian sex in the movies has long been reduced to two women holding their palms out flat toward the other's, hovering but not quite touching, which is to say that The Super Mario Galaxy Movie hinges on incestual lesbian sex saving the universe. So that's something! Indeed that's the best thing I can say about this clashing cacophony of noise which has me pitying all the poor parents out there -- get ready to paint eyes onto your eyelids so the kids don't catch onto your snooze, Moms and Pops. The movie does unlock its honest end-game though, in that it really made me want to dig out my dusty Wii to play Super Mario Galaxy again -- this is nothing but an assemblage of dopamine signifiers for Mario-heads, lapsed or still running, with nary a thought thunk outside that sphere. There is a scene where I really thought the movie might reenact Raiders' infamous opening of the ark scene, just with Bones Ghosts melting Princess Peach's face off, but that sadly didn't come to pass -- like everything here, opportunities super smashed.

And Now, The Weekend

Have to admit that in the days that have passed since I wrote a few thoughts down on here about the new Guardians of the Galaxy movie that I have been feeling as if I was a little too hard on it. The good stuff that I liked (and I do mention most of it in that review) has bubbled up, while the stuff that bugged me has fallen a little to the side. Which is to say I'm only human, y'all. Of flesh and bone am made. Human. Born to make mistakes. I think most people going to this will enjoy themselves -- the people who's de-boarded the Marvel train who'll see the same issues with it that I did are long gone by now. I do wish these movies would try to be less, but I am definitely losing that battle.

That said if you have to go see a movie this weekend what I recommend is you go see The Eight Mountains, which I reviewed right here yesterday. That movie is as of today, May 5th 2023, my favorite movie of 2023. There's still a lot to come out this year obviously, and I will not be surprised if it things shift around -- tis their way to do just that. But this will be one of the films of the year, have no doubt about that, so see it as soon as you can. What it says about the ways which we change over the years, the way we stay the same, and the way all of that weathers on friendship in particular, felt deeply profound to me. That movie is a gift! So give yourselves a gift! And have a great weekend!

One Giant Beep Beep Honk Honk For Mankind

"Did I look cool?" That's the question on the Star-lord nee Peter Quill's lips as he suffers the consequences of another mind-boggingly stupid action toward the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. (And "mind-bogglingly stupid" comes so naturally to Chris Pratt, doesn't it?) And that question might as well be branded into this franchise's rear-end, so guiding a mantra it's proven -- looking-coolness above all else! I mean who doesn't want to see cool shit, right? Well at some point around the middle of this movie, even before Pratt uttered that line, perhaps around the ninetieth needle drop give or take, I'd found myself so sick to death of manic clawing for "cool" that I wished I'd never suffer it again.

I want you to think back upon Mad Max Fury Road for a moment -- now, we all know the Herculean effort that went into Fury Road (and if not go read our pal Kyle's book). I can in no way claim that what that film does was effortless. But that film feels effortlessly cool, anyway -- coolness just explodes out of it in every frame, and George Miller makes all of the wires invisible that somehow hold the insane contraption of it up. It's rare alchemy, real magic.

But Guardians 3 is just such a goddamned try-hard. Perhaps, we could make the argument, that this is in keeping with the rag-tag bunch of losers who the films have given these three grand adventures. Like with Star-lord's line of dialogue these people very much want to come off as cool, but they keep tripping over themselves in the trying. I personally don't think James Gunn & Co meant to go that meta -- they spent an awful lot of money to keep tripping over themselves, if so.

But there are pleasures to be had. The film's best joke comes via its best actress (that'd be Elizabeth Debicki) but that's approximately one second long. There's a hallway fight scene that calls back to that time the Avengers first fought together in New York that legitimately reaches coolness. Visually Gunn gives us some fantastic scenery and spaces -- this is (for the most part) nowhere near as dreary and eye-pokingly ugly as the last Ant-Man movie was. And I do have great affection for several of these characters by now -- I would watch ten hours of a Drax & Mantis series in a split second. Also Will Poulter proves immediately endearing and I welcome his Adam Warlock into the fold.

Best of all the horror-loving Gunn's tendencies toward the squishy and horrific are on full display, and those will always make me giddy -- this thing has some deeply disturbing imagery waiting in store to give wee ones looking for Talking Raccoon Adventure Time the sort of life-long nightmares that Watership Down or Poltergeist gave to those of us who came of age in previous ages. I always have affection for those kind of stealth nightmare-makers!

But when you manage to get the number one Radiohead fan in all the world -- that would be me -- to think to themselves, "Really -- you're going to play the entire Radiohead song? The whole thing, from start to finish?" Well then you know that you're maybe trying too hard. And that it's gotten a little exhausting to watch. These characters are exhausted, I was exhausted -- when the time for the space sabbatical comes I was all in. Just stuff me into a sleep-chamber and let us all rest already, Marvel. We all need a break.

Quote of the Day

"The animal people said, “Would you mind taking the snake [that Lena holds in scenes] home?” I was asked to keep the snake so it would get used to me. It was a corn snake. The idea was that I would take the snake home, have it on my vast bed the size of a football pitch, and it would sleep down there in a bag. It began to cough up these fur balls. It was quite disgusting. I don’t think it got to know me very well because it did bite me. The whole thing was slightly Wild West-ish, I have to say. Think of the snake — the snake shouldn’t have to go and spend the night in an actor’s house."

I saw a press screening of the new animated Super Mario Brothers movie last evening and when I got home I felt compelled to watch the 1993 version, which I had not laid a single solitary eyeball upon since it was released in 1993 and uhh holy shit y'all. Super Mario Bros 1993 is... a movie. Where else are you gonna see eternal scene-stealer Fiona Shaw in purple latex and a beehive whooping it up with Dennis fuckin' Hopper? (Beside my wet dreams, of course.) Anyway that's Fiona speaking above via the just dropped oral history of the 1993 movie at Inverse, read the whole damn thing right here. That movie is just wholly inexplicable in ways I don't think any of us will ever comprehend, but this gives an adequate start. Maybe if you smoke some crack cocaine and read it things will make a little more sense. Who can say? Here's the trailer of the new movie, which comparatively is about one billion percent more what one would expect out of a Super Mario movie:

Play With Me

I have been lousy about linking from here to all of the lists I've been rounding up at Mashable over the past few weeks, so a reminder: you can see all of my Mashable pieces if you click on this link. The above gif of Daniel Craig in Tomb Raider is a reference to my most recent one, where I told all the people of the world "The 10 Greatest Movies Based On Games," see that one right here. It's been a stellar couple of years for people finally figuring out what to do with video-game adaptations in particular -- we'll see if that carries over to the Super Mario movie, which I am seeing tonight! (I have my doubts, and they are shaped like Chris Pratt!) Here's that movie's trailer if you haven't seen it yet:

Chomp Goes The Bronto

(pic via) So as detailed briefly on Monday (and several hundred other times over these many years) I fancy myself a Jurassic Park nerd from way back. Saw the original several gajillion times, et cetera et cetera. That said I've been exceptionally depressed and defeated by the most recently trilogy of World movies, and I am sad to report that that remains the case with the new movie, original trio of actors be darned -- click on over to Pajiba to read my exceptionally unhappy thoughts about Jurassic World Dominion, which hits theaters tomorrow. Oh well! We'll always have the first movie. And I suppose it could have been worse -- I could have been literally murdered by a Tyrannosaur Rex! There is that.

The Birthday Beggar-saurus

Yes that is a photo of a fifteen-year-old me (and my cousin) in the year 1993 at Universal Studios Orlando being happily terrorized by Jurassic Park's Tyrannosaur Rex -- I hadn't even seen the movie yet at that point but it was all I cared about, and once it came out a few weeks later I went and saw it ten times in the theater that summer (which remained my personal record until Call Me By Your Name came out). Anyway I post it because that hibernating dino-nerd woke up in my belly something hard this morning when I realized I am seeing the new Jurassic movie tonight -- Jurassic World: Dominion hits theaters this weekend and you can watch the trailer here and you can expect my review in a couple of days. Until this morning I had low expectations, but that dino-nerd in my belly is making me super excited anyway! If nothing else...

... it'll be a treat seeing Laura Dern and Sam Neill and Jeff Goldblum all reunited for the first time since the original movie. I'm really hoping that Dern side-eyes Chris Pratt right off a cliff, I am!

But wait! Jurassic Park nonsense is not the only reason I'm posting right now -- speaking of looking backwards in the rearview mirror that says "Objects in mirror are closer than they appear" or whatever, I realized over the weekend that I forgot to mark MNPP's birthday last week! I started blogging this site on June 2nd 2005, meaning we just turned seventeen! We're like that Janis Ian song now! Weird to think I have been blogging here longer than I had been alive in that top photo? Ergh best not fall down that wormhole. Anyway thanks to everybody for reading! And as I do every blog birthday I'll now put on my lil' beggar's cap and say -- hey, if you enjoy what I do here, why not toss us a penny or two?

You can donate right here. Or in
the right-hand column there is a link too.
Thanks y'all!

Dino Dominion

Alongside tickets now being on sale (buy yours here) there's been a big drop of new Jurassic World: Dominion content today, with posters, photos, and a bigger gnarlier trailer than the first one we saw -- they've moved past the "holy shit we got the original trio of Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum to reunite for this!" portion of the press push and now they've arrived at the "Hey we might murder one or more than one of your oldest pretend friends, what fun!" part, which yippee, that's definitely what our collective moods neeed these days. Needless stress, huzzah! Here is the trailer:

I haven't much liked any of the Jurassic World movies so my hopes aren't stratospheric for this, but we will see -- I would love love love to be proven wrong in my pessimism. I very much want this to be good, to capture even a tenth of the magic of the first film. As I've said a billion times the first Jurassic Park was my Star Wars -- I was the perfect age and I went and saw it in the theater fifteen goddamned times! I went every single day the week it was released in 1993. I was a junkie for it. The second and third films have their moments too -- indeed if you follow me on twitter...

... then you know I am currently doing a re-watch of the movies, although I've only made it through the first two so far. And I'm actively dreading getting to the World movies already -- I haven't re-watched a single one of them after seeing them in the theater. They're so cynical, in my mind, so un-awed by what they're about -- Spielberg really made you feel the weight of Crichton's ideas, but the new ones just toss dinosaurs at us like junk-food. To paraphrase what Jeff Goldblum says to B.D. Wong in the first film -- the Jurassic World CG technicians were so preoccupied with whether they could create every single dinosaur and toss it on the screen in a melee of dino-action that they didn't stop to think if they should. Nothing matters in those movies, it's all popcorn, no weight. Anyway I hope Dominion makes itself matter! At least...

... seeing Laura Dern scream her freaking lungs out makes me care automatically, so there's that. This hits screens on June 13th -- hit the jump for a few more photos...

Good Morning, Alan Grant and Ellie Sattler

Damn damn damn, just when I thought I was out... the Jurassic World movies have generally been rather terrible and I have hated each one, but seeing Laura Dern, Sam Neill, and Jeff Goldblum all here for the third one... I am not made of stone, I am not made of anything near stone, I am made of viscous gelatinous goo basically, so weak so very weak, and so this has sent me spiraling back to 1993, me being the biggest Jurassic Park nerd in all the land. I saw Spielberg's original film 15 times in the theater that summer. It is a touchstone among touchstones. And so how am I supposed to resist?

I know this movie will be 85% Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard running around and I will be annoyed at all of that -- like the last one, how they had like ten seconds of Jeff Goldblum sitting in a courtroom and stuck every inch of those ten seconds into its trailer to try to fool us. But I don't care! Fool me! For the warm nostalgia I am feeling inside from the Before We Were All Dead Inside times I don't care. It's worth it for the feeling I have looking at these photos right now. Here's the damn trailer:

Jurassic World; Dominion stomps out childhoods on June 10th.
And a happy birthday to Laura Dern today, as well!

Quotes of the Day

"I’ve always found that [nudity] made me feel very powerful. You’re saying: This is me. This is the bad shit. I’m not in good shape. This is the hair on my chest. Forgive me, that sounds so fucking actorly, but there’s something about nudity that just gets right to the point.”

I know I saw some people -- the right, smart people -- answering that "Who's the Best Chris?" meme that was going around this past week -- the one that rears its head very few months, and which this time pissed homophobic-church-supporting Chris Pratt off since he per usual came in last -- by saying, "Chris Messina, obviously!" But for serious -- Chris Messina, obviously! He's the only Chris that's not only whipped his dick out on screen, and more than once -- he has talked beautifully about how important whipping his dick out is to His Art here in this new chat with The Cut (thx Mac). How does that not immediately crown him King of the Chrises? Oh and then there's this amazing bit of deeply admirable pervertedness:

"He goes on to describe an early acting experience in which he had to masturbate to completion (with his back to the audience) in a play. He usually mimed the action, but the day his parents came to watch he decided to go for the real thing: “I remember thinking, You’re not a real actor. I could end this now and put them at ease, or I could be a real fucking actor and keep going.” So this time, he really went for it — as in he really jacked off — but in his determination to prove himself he got stressed, and just ended up making the scene much too long. Luckily, his parents didn’t bring it up afterward. “They were just like, ‘Where do you wanna go, wanna get something to eat?’”

This Man Was Made For Snacking

.
Somehow I totally missed this news but there's going to be an animated Jurassic World show airing on Netflix? And one of the characters will be voiced by Glen Powell? Sign me the heck up. Maybe it'll be better than the godawful Jurassic World movies so far. It's called Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous and it's set on the opposite side of Isla Nublar while the events of the first Jurassic World film go on... and this is a huge spoiler if you haven't seen the first Jurassic World movie so prepare yourself if you haven't seen it, but what happens in the first Jurassic World movie is the dinosaurs get loose and start eating the guests of the dinosaur-themed amusement park. I know! It's crazy! Anyway there's a trailer, watch:

So as you see there Camp Cretaceous -- which drops on Netflix on September 18th -- follows a group of teens, voiced by Powell and The Good Place actress Jameela Jamil among many, who band together to fight the dinos yadda yadda -- if you're desperate for ambitiously detailed descriptions of every one of the characters on the show click here; that seems a bit much for me, but the days are long and I will not judge anyone for finding creative ways to fill them. Speaking of let's hit the jump to stare at several more photos of Glen Powell, who will hopefully just go on and replace Chris Pratt in the live-action films while we're at it...

When Dern & So's Ruled the Earth

.
I'd be remiss if I didn't take this brief moment I have to post today to mention today's big big news, since Steven Spielberg's 1993 film Jurassic Park was after all my Star Wars -- that is to say the movie that got Little Jason obsessed with the movies that I went to see a dozen times. That big big news? That the first film's original stars Sam Neill and Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum will all three be returning to those original roles of Alan Grant and Ellie Sattler and Ian Malcom for the next Jurassic World movie.
.
.
This will be the first time all three will return at once, although they have each played the roles again here and there in the franchise's many sequels. I saw somebody say that upon announcing the news they also said that their characters will have actual things to do and it won't be like the last Jurassic World movie which sold us Jeff Goldblum in the trailers and then gave us like two minutes of him sitting in a courtroom.

We'll see. I haven't liked Colin Trevorrow's Jurassic movies at all, not even that last one that got better notices, so I'm a little wary. But I can't pretend I didn't get goosebumps picturing my trio back together. When I met Laura Dern that one time I embarrassingly gushed about JP at her even though I could've gone into any more respectable corner of her filmography -- it's not like I don't worship her David Lynch work! But Jurassic is my Bible. When I was home a few weeks ago I dug up my box of memorabilia, take a look:

Washing Avengers Cum Off

.
.
I don't know if you guys know this but there's a new Marvel Superhero movie out this weekend! You're welcome! You might want to quick check on tickets though... like, don't wait to read this sentence, go now. The rest of us we should click on over to The Film Experience where this week's edition of our "Beauty vs Beast" poll is facing down the big purple pariah seen above, pomegranate cheeks in the Titian breeze, with a certain enthusiastically side-burned Star-Lord. Hashtag Washing Avengers Cum off indeed...

Jurassic World 2 in 200 Words or Less

.
Given our history I really shouldn't be walking out of Jurassic World (née Park) movies with as little an opinion either way as I walked out of the second Jurassic World movie this weekend. At least I walked out of the first one angry - I walked out of this one with a shrug. There was some beautiful film-making on display from director J.A. Bayona - some truly gorgeous and memorable shots, like the Brachiosaurus on the end of the dock or the one that twisted upside down and over the rooftop with the Whatever-a-saurus-raptor thing.

Individual moments deliver. But I just don't know what these movies are in service to anymore, at least not unless I allow myself the entirely cynical answer of "money" -- which is obviously the end-game for many, very many, people involved with these movies. But not all. Or so one would hope? But I just don't get it, whatever it is. There's a tactility missing now - I think these movies really needed the grounding that the very last gasp of practical effects gave them, and now that we can see these computer-generated whatever do whatever it's whatever.

Which is Hotter?

.
I've got to play some catch-up - both Chris Pratt (here) and Jason Momoa (here) were spotted on vacation (seperately, unfortunately) last week (thanks Mac) and I missed it! My...

... goodness. And so we'll make a fun game of it, aka we'll force
you to choose. Sophie wishes she had it so easy.

And now after making that impossible choice I have
a reward for you - more pictures of them after the jump...

Everything You Ever Need To Know About Life...

... you can learn from:

Aurora: Seeing is not believing. It's the
other way around. Believe, and you will see.

A happy 43 to the director J.A. Bayona today! I haven't seen The Orphanage since it came out but I remember being somewhat disappointed with it, after all the early raves (here's my old review) - that said I'd be curious to watch it again, see how it strikes me now. I've really loved everything Bayona has done since that movie...

... and speaking of I just saw the latest trailer for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom before Infinity War and... I might actually be optimistic? I didn't love Trevorrow's 2015 film at all - I haven't even bothered re-watching it, and if you know of my bone-deep affection for the Jurassic franchise  (I saw the 1993 film in the theaters fifteen times) then you know what a slippage that represents.

But Bayona's already proven himself to be ten times the director Trevorrow has, and the latest trailer improved ten-fold on the first trailer (which was kind of groan-worthy) by painting the entire thing as a straight-up horror flick. It's like the tree-monster from Bayona's masterful A Monster Calls has gone murderously rogue and I am one hundred percent into it. Watch:
.

.
Are you guys optimistic for Fallen Kingdom?

Which Is Hotter?

.
I really want Anna Faris back in the movie business and a remake of Goldie Hawn's 1987 comedy Overboard seemed at first glance like a fun possibility, but the buzz on this sucker (in theaters tomorrow) is pretty bad - it still seems incomprehensible to me, with all due respect to her co-star Eugenio Derbez, that they didn't cast her at-the-time husband Chris Pratt in the role.

Chris Pratt is so Kurt Russell that they hired Kurt Russell to play his dad in the second Guardians movie, for god's sake. I know the socio-economic and gender roles have been reversed this time in order to get around the original's way dated notions of such things but it still feels like a huge opportunity missed. Oh well. I guess we'll see! (Probably when it hits Netflix.) But as long as we're here and I'm thinking about what great white trash Kurt played back in the 80s...

So I Finally Saw Infinity War Last Night...

.
... and it's impossible to review it without talking about spoilers... and I kind of don't even want to write a big proper review anyway... so if anybody wants to share their thoughts on it let's go to the comments. I'm going to share a quick thought of my own there too. Point being if you're spoiler-averse don't click on the comments, folks.  Don't look down there at all! But since I was probably the last person on Earth to see the movie I don't think any of you will much care either...

Today's Fanboy Delusion

Today I'd rather be...

... feeling super with Chris Pratt.
.

.
Didn't they used to release Super Bowl commercials... during the Super Bowl? I mean I guess there's a lot of noise during the Super Bowl that your little ad about Chris Pratt's nipples might get lost in, but it still seems a little premature to drop [pretend you know when the Super Bowl airs here] days early. Oh well! Let those of us who prefer our half-naked Chris Pratt free of sports bullshit enjoy it in peace, I suppose. Hit the jump for a few more gifs I made...

Do Electric Dinosaurs Dream Of Jeeps?

.
It's telling that I am having to force myself to post the first trailer for the new Jurassic World movie - when I saw the first Jurassic World movie I went with two other people and they both liked it and I walked out miserable; it lacked any of the wonder and joy the first film or world-gone-wrong horror of the second one - it just sorta sat there, which felt like the worst thing a Jurassic Park movie could do. Do realize I am coming at this as the Super Fan To End All Super Fans, in case you haven't been around here long - I saw the first movie in the theater a dozen plus times. It was my Star Wars.
.

Anyway as that tweet expresses I was hella excited (hella, I say!) when I found out the new movie was going to be a full-on disaster movie but with dinosaurs thrown into the mix - if there's one thing I love as much as my dinosaurs it is dumb disaster movies. A volcano? Come on! You're talking to a man who's watched Dante's Peak dozens of times over the years. But then the full trailer came out last night and... there's something off? Tonally speaking this thing just looks even more joyless than the last one.

Perhaps if I had an emotional attachment to Pratt & Howard's repartee but they just make me cringe, and I get that Dr. Ian Malcolm has been chased by dinosaurs two times in his life already but Jeff Goldblum feels like a husk of himself monotoning over this thing. And the CG on the dinos looks weightless - nowhere near the skill of what we were looking at 25 years ago (oh my god it's almost been 25 years) in the original film. Anyway watch:
.
.
I really really hope I am proven wrong. JA Bayona is a GOOD director, having previously given us The Orphanage and The Impossible and A Monster Calls. What're you guys feeling with this?
.
