Nicholas Hoult Seventeen Times

I hate that I'm forced to think about hateful bigot J.K. Rowling and her Harry Potter bullshit now when I post about my boy Nicholas Hoult, but he frustratingly brought it on himself (and me!) by briefly signing on to take a role in HBO's trans-genocide-funding adaptation before reading the room's quite reasonable disappointment in him and suddenly finding a "scheduling conflict." (His role was happily snatched up by Kit Harington, another disappointment, but I guess we'll cross that bridge the next time Kit drops a hot photoshoot.) Anyway I haven't seen Nicky further disavow the franchise or Rowling's obscene behavior so it's with that upfront caveat that I bring you this new photoshoot of him looking typically gorgeous for ICON America magazine. The magazine hasn't put the interview with him online yet, not that I can find -- there is no proper link and I had to source these pictures from several different Instagrams. But he looks good and we're hoping he's learned some lessons and listened to some folks. Hit the jump for all the photos...

Everything You Ever Need To Know About Life...

 ... you can learn from:

True History of the Kelly Gang (2019)

Ned Kelly: My wish for you, my dearest child, is that all the coarse words and cruelty I have related in these pages seem queer and foreign to you, like some strange tale from an ancient world. But if they do not, and you, like I, have suffered from injustice at the hand of oppressors, remember that you are a Kelly, and never forget that you were mine and that you were loved. Whatever they write about me, whatever names I am given or whatever falsehoods are attributed to me, know that much is true. So go out into the world and make of it what you wish. Write your own history. For you are my future now.

A very happy birthday to Mr. Essie Davis himself, the great Aussie writer-director Justin Kurzel -- we're huge fans of his movies which have been non-stop dissections of modern masculinity and its various elaborate grotesqueries. I am ashamed to admit that I still haven't watched his Jacob Elordi series The Long Narrow Road to the North -- have any of you? I mean...

... how have I not watched this yet? Between that and Kelly Gang and Fassbender in Macbeth -- our man knows how to make men look gorgeous when he wants to, and disgusting (Snowtown, Nitram... also the Kelly Gang) also when necesarry. That should wor well if his next project ever starts filming -- I told you about Burning Rainbow Farm all the way in January 2025 but it still hasn't filmed; not sure what's up with that. It will tell the true story of a gay couple who boult a stoner utopia in Michigan in the 90s which became embroiled in a war with the government, and it was set to star Sebastian Stan and Leo Woodall. The people demand this movie happen dammit!

Nicholas Hoult Forty Times

As much as we loved Nicholas Hoult's "slutty blond" phase, as we called it, there was only so depressed we could be about it when he shaved it off because... our boy shaved it off and wore a leather suit to the Met Gala and that was all also extremely, extremely hot as well. (And sidenote: is there some reason I don't see usually Nicky's name being bandied about for James Bond? Why isn't he always on every list of contenders I see?) But I'm glad he sneaked in a surprise treat for us before the big shave happened -- I shouldn't have doubted he'd treat us so right, as he's always been a very good boy. And Nicky, whilst still slutty blond, went and shot a cover-shoot for The Face magazine for us.

Or so it seems? The Face, once a UK magazine, apparently shut down earlier this year... only to be snatched up and bought by a Chinese firm, who are immediately relaunching it? With Mr. Hoult as their first cover star? I honestly spent all weekend (I'm always so annoyed when these things drop on the weekend) trying to figure out this mystery to no avail -- they do have a website but all it contains for the moment is a form to fill out the newsletter to find out when the relaunch is actually happening. They've also got a bare-bones Instagram account. But none of these things contain anything about this photo-shoot yet, so I have no idea where all this shoot was coming from.

As far as I can tell it popped up on Reddit first, and then the images and video spread like wildfire from there. For obvious reasons! As I said when I posted some of the shoot on Bluesky -- this shoot is "Chris Evans in Flaunt magazine" level stuff (the goldest of golden standards) from where I stand...

... and it should be celebrated as such. And I'm annoyed I can't link to a proper source -- I'm even more annoyed that I can't immediately order ten copies of this issue, to be honest. So when that news does land I will surely post more -- hopefully there will be even more photos from this shoot to come once it does because...

... well for one you can't give us a glimpse of an image like THAT in the video and then never feed us a proper full body photo. You simply cannot. Anyway I gathered up everything I could find, and it's a lot, but it could always be more. That's the number one golden rule of gratuity. MORE. GIMME MORE. But hit the jump for what we got for now...

Nicholas Hoult Wants To Play Master

I don't know if you kept checking back on my post of photos of Nicholas Hoult rocking this leather ensemble at the Met Gala the other week but if you only saw it the one time I recommend going back and scanning down as I went off. And with good reason! And I'm extremely thankful to've found even more photos from that blessed event today because we've got Nicky News to share and I wouldn't want to share it with any other photos. And it's super duper incredible Nicky News too. Hhe is teaming up with God's Own Country filmmaker Francis Lee -- right??? We're already excited -- to remake the 1963 Joseph Losey classic of homoerotic domination The Servant! (thx Mac) I only saw The Servant (which stars Dirk Bogarde and a delicious James Fox) this past year for the first time when Criterion released it and it is already hot hot hot stuff in that very restrained and coded way of its time -- wondering how Lee will update this all has me...

... feeling things. The same sort of things these pictures of Nicky wearing leather makes me feel, actually. Anyway I'm not even done with all the incredible news here -- Hoult (who's playing the Fox role of course) will be starring opposite Colman Domingo in the Bogarde role of the man-servant who flips the script on his boss-man. Lee's version will relocate the story from the Swinging 60s in London of the original movie to 1950s New York -- and the fact that race has entered the chat due to Colman's casting will surely add some wrinkles when it comes to the power dynamics between the two men. Anyway as if all of THAT wasn't enough (and it was!) Hamnet hottie Noah Jupe (click here, click here) is also in the cast. This is unfathomably awesome movie news to end the week with!

Pics of the Day

I mentioned this on this morning's Connor Storrie post but then I saw the above photo and realized there's no way I'm getting away with not giving Nicholas Hoult's look at last night's Met Gala a post of its own. Because good goddamn, Nicky! The thoughts he made me think last night should not be shared in public among mixed company, let's just say that. I saw the buzzed hair first and was momentarily sad we'd lost his Slutty Blond phase but y'all -- it was worth it. See more here and here. Or hit the jump for a couple more...

Pics of the Day

Much like his X-Men co-star Michael Fassbender, who also proved he could fill out a race-car-driver jumpsuit and then some on his spare time, Nicholas Hoult's decided to gift the world with images of him indulging in his sexy man pastime -- and he's done it while his hair's still dyed blond to boot. He is such a good boy. I think him and Fassy should tag-team. And.... I couldn't bring myself to write any more words in that sentence. That sentence had to end right there.

Sing Me a Song of Beautiful Men

Well here's some news tailor-made (heh see what I did there) for MNPP -- former designer turned movie director Tom Ford (now you see what I did there) has announced his next film and it's an adaptation of Anne Rice's book Cry To Heaven about 18th Century Italian Opera. None of those things are really the specific things that make this a tight fit onto our interests -- it's all about the cast, baby. Namely it will star (among others) Nicholas Hoult, George MacKay, Colin Firth, Paul Bettany, Mark Strong, Theodore Pellerin, Daryl McCormack and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Phew! Several of those people have worked with Ford before: Hoult and Firth were both in A Single Man of course....

... sorry I can't mention that fact without posting that gif; it's written into my contract. And then Aaron Taylor-Johnson memorably wiped his ass while sitting on an outdoor toilet in everybody's favorite movie of the millenium Nocturnal Animals. Don't worry -- I am not sharing that gif. And the rest of those names will be served wonderfully by Ford's eye I have no doubt -- I especially can't wait to see how he shoots the outrageous angles of Pellerin & MacKay's faces. Oh and Daryl McCormack, who's just soooo dreeeeeeamy.

Wait what were we talking about? Oh right this is a movie. I have never read this Anne Rice book but one assumes that the big headline here is the person I have not yet named in the cast -- the singer Adele is making her acting debut in a movie about opera singers. I imagine she's the lead and all of these insanely good looking men will be circling around her? I don't know; maybe Tom will give her a light load on her first film and some of these gorgeous men will pick up the slack. Whatever. GIMME! Other names in the cast -- that kid Owen Cooper from Adolesence, Ciarán Hinds,  Thandiwe Newton, Hunter Schafer, and Lux "sister of Pedro" Pascal. This sucker's loaded up yo!

Night By Nicky

Today ended up being a weird day as I had a screening in the morning and I'm still catching up on stuff from the brain-melting illness that melted my brain over the weekend -- hell I'm not even 100% yet from that, as my boyfriend will tell you via his excrutiating experience of being forced to listen to me hack and wheeze all night long. Good times, good times. Anyway I am making it up to you with 1) that photo of slutty blond Nicky Hoult, as we do love his blond era very much, and 2) a promise that tomorrow will be a more thorough posting experience. Heck I've already got two posts lined up to publish tomorrow morning! So for once I'm not lying. See? 2025 isn't just shit. It's a lot of shit, yes, but not just. I do what I can.

Supes of the Day

There's a scene very early on in James Gunn's Superman that is the best scene in the entire movie. And as good as the movie is -- and it's perfectly good! -- one wishes that one scene had been the template for all of the scenes around it. It's the scene where Clark Kent (David Corenswet) and Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) fall into each other's arms in the comfort of her apartment, safe from prying eyes -- we quickly learn that the sarcastic banter the two have perfected at work in the Daily Planet is a cover for their downlow relationship (of three months), and the Lois in this movie is fully aware that Clark is Superman's disguise. She starts ribbing Clark for publishing easy interviews with his alter-ego in their paper, and so he playfully suggests she interview him this time.

This being Lois f'ing Lane though she chooses to ignore Clark's patronizing tone and snatch at the opportunity to interview the biggest story in the world, relationship or not -- she does warn him, but he's Superman right? We've already seen him at this point take mega-punches from flying monstrosities -- surely he can handle some questions from a mere lady reporter. (That's not me talking -- you can clearly, and to the film's benefit, see Lois bristle at Clark's condescension.)

What follows is a wallop of a scene where we watch two entirely game actors slapping dialogue and actual (can you believe it) ideas back and forth at one another like a verbal Wimbledon -- it's the best action scene in the movie and it's basically two people sitting on chairs the entire time. Corenswet and Brosnahan have mega-chemistry, and what the characters are debating -- the reality of what Superman's god-like powers mean in a complicated world with borders nad laws -- sets the and tone and the story's main thrust for everything that comes after it. Point being: whoever came up with this scene deserves an enormous raise.

If all of Superman had adhered to that emotional and intellectual coherence this film would be a stone-cold insta-classic -- it's sure got a pile of great ingrediants and ideas bouncing around. The cast is pretty much head to toe wonderful -- I'll admit Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder will always be the Clark & Lois I picture when somebody asks me to picture Clark & Lois but the two here are far and away the best iteration of the greatest couple in comic-dom that we've seen since then.

So it's truly a shame that after this scene the two barely share the screen again for the rest of the film! The Donner films (and a few television series since then) knew that Superman works best as a romance-story --  as much as the villainous Lex Luthor (here played with delightful relish by a spit-flecked Nicholas Hoult) has come to represent Superman's greatest antagonist it's the relationship with Lois, as our cynical but hopeful representative of humanity, that really beats the Big Blue Boy Scout's heart.

And it's not that Brosnahan doesn't get stuff to do in the meantime. While the hero is off fighting kaiju and slipping into pocket dimensions she's working with what she's got to straighten out the world and it ultimately integral to its saving. And perhaps Gunn didn't want the film to solely define her in relation to Clark & Supes -- I get that. But there's no denying the film feels its most alive and meaningful when all its extra stuff (so much extra stuff) gets swept aside and it focuses on that heart. And one does wish they'd found a way to really anchor the movie around that more consistently.

But still -- a perfectly good time. Whenever the John Williams' theme swept in my tear-ducts spontaneously erupted, and adorable Krypto more than earns his keep. It's not that there's anything absolutely terrible on hand that I can point to here -- well except that maybe a couple of girly girl characters on-screen come off as an eensy bit misogynistic. It's more just a lack of focus that turns out to be Gunn's Kryptonite. How much of that is the no-doubt-suffocating pressure to reboot an entire Cinematic Universe being heaped onto him I'll leave to the business-side pundits -- as for Superman, the movie itself, it's not a fatal glitch in the matrix. But it is a Trojan Horse that splits everything at its seams somewhat. I guess that's just the movies in 2025 though -- nothing can be just itself. Everything's gotta be everything to everybody. Superman most of all.

Who Wore It Best?

I realize that I ended yesterday with a "Which is hotter?" poll between Superman stars David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult so this is getting redundant but whatcha gonna do when Supes himself posts side-by-side photos of himself and Nicky sporting (generally) the same outfit? Yes he did it as a joke but we still have to ask!

And also, and more importantly, this gives me the perfect excuse I was looking for to post the several more photos of Nicky at the premiere yesterday in his leather pants that dropped. Far be it from me to deny a gallery of such splendor. Hit the jump for them....

I'm Just Gonna Leave...

... this photo of David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult (in leather pants!) at the Los Angeles premiere of Superman here for your viewing enjoyment whilst I run off... dare I say like a bird or like a plane? Yeah I'm going to see Superman now. Here is a poll to also help you pass the time until you can hear my thoughts (aka the only thoughts that matter):

Hoults Have More Fun

Although it wasn't a blow-out y'all agreed with me on last week's poll that Nicholas Hoult's new blond hair is by no means a disaster -- in fact he's totally pulling it off and as a fun summer diversion I can't say I'm not enjoying the sight. I think it makes its case as 2025's hair equivalent of Jonathan Bailey's much-memed "slutty little glasses."

Pics of the Day

Whoa ho ho! Nicky Hoult's bleached his hair out! He showed it off for the first time filming Jimmy Kimmel's show yesterday for his Superman duties -- what do we think? He's so pretty I think it's fine, but I'm not gonna lie -- I prefer the dark hair setting off those gorgeous blue eyes of his. But it's not a disaster or anything. If I had to guess I'd guess that this is for his upcoming movie How to Rob a Bank from Atomic Blonde (how appropriate) and Bullet Train director David Leitch -- he likes things bright and poppy and such and this fits into that wheelhouse for sure. Also that's the only unfilmed movie on Nicky's IMDb page right now. I'm a real Sherlock! Anyway I won't force my opinions on y'all -- here's a poll!

Flex Yo Lex

As much as I enjoy the photoshoots that Nicky's done alongside his Superman partner David Corenswet (and enjoy them I have) I'm certainly not sad to get a Nothin-But-Nicky shoot too. And this one from Empire magazine feels like the perfect place to leave us soaking for the weekend. Our boy looks good in Kryptonian green, doesn't he? (I'm going to be so torn deciding on who to root for in this movie.) Anyway tomorrow's a Summer Friday for me but there's a good chance I'll drop some Tribeca reviews over the three-day-weekend anyway -- yes the fest's ended, but I do still have more of those coming! I am just as ever running behind, behind, and behind some more. So do stay tuned. And do have a good weekend. And do stay sane, if you can. And as a reward you can hit the jump for the fresh hot Nicky-ness now at hand..

Today's Fanboy Delusion

 Today I'd rather be...

... in need of rescue.

Save me, David Corenswet! You're my only hope! My pants have fallen off and only you can do something about it! Pardon me my Superman fan fiction here -- Entertainment Weekly dropped their big Superman issue this week (the movie is out in exactly one month!) and every photo of David Corenswet, in and out (ahem) of costume, was like a slap upside the face with a fistful of kryptonite.

Sight unseen I hope this movie is good and successful because
I need to continue staring at David Corenswet for a very long time.

Two Super Dudes For The Price Of One

I was not at all prepared for the new Wonderland magazine cover photoshoot of our new Superman and his Lex Luthor aka David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult sharing space, knees touching, looking all of this hot at all of this once...

... don't you feel it? It's a lot, man! It's a good thing I only have a three day work-week this week because I am going to need a lot of time to myself now. I haven't read the conversation between the two beauties that accompanies the photos yet because my ability to read's been impacted. I'll get to it. For now hit the jump for the superheroic photos...

Nicholas Hoult Eight Times

Apparently today is the 23rd anniversary of About a Boy (according to EW) so I will go ahead and post this new photoshoot of that movie's breakout, the boy himself, Nicholas Hoult. Of course Nicky was only 12 when that movie was made so we didn't know for several years that he'd become the dreamboat movie star he went on to become -- never underestimate the gawky weird kids! I should actually re-watch About a Boy, I haven't seen it in a very very long time -- aww remember when him and Toni Collette reunited for that Clint Eastwood movie that nobody saw last year? That was a sweet moment. Have him and Hugh Grant worked together since? I don't feel like looking that up so feel free to tell me if so. Anyway this new shoot is for Arena Homme+ magazine and dropped yesterday, hit the jump for the entirety (with a little surprise at the bottom)...

Nicholas Hoult Thirteen Times

I have to be extremely quick pounding (ahem) out this post because I'm running out the door in a minute, but how could I not cram in (ahem) a new Nicholas Hoult photoshoot? This is for i-D magazine and there's also an interview at this link -- since I'm rushing I have not read it but I have taken a second to ogle all of these photos and that's gonna be enough to get me through what's promising to be an annoying day from here on out. Hit the jump for a full Nicky fix...

Sucking the Boys Dry At Home!

If you somehow haven't seen Robert Eggers' tremendous Nosferatu yet I will try not to judge you (oh wait, too late) and simply direct you to the streaming service Peacock, where the film is now available to stream from the comfort of your reclusive bubble. Here is my review of the film, which technically landed at #4 on my favorite movies of 2024 list but ask me another day it could've been my number one. Having watched it at home and in the theater (repeatedly) now I can say with certainty that the movie really benefits from the theatrical experience -- for one it's a dark movie...

People who complained about NOSFERATU being "too dark" really never watched GAME OF THRONES did they

... although in a purposefully meted out way; this isn't sloppy darkness. It's painterly. But you need the screen to be large to really appreciate the detail of what's happening inside of Eggers' frames. But if it's to be at home you might be better off watching the 4K disc of the film as opposed to relying on the quality and strength of a streamer's transmission. But you do you! Just turn off all of the lights and let the mood envelope you. God I love this (sorta gay) movie.

We All Fall For Nosferatu

Some terrific physical media news landing in the last 12 hours (for those of you who know physical media is where it's at, and the rest of you who should learn just that) -- first up we've got the official release info for Robert Eggers' Nosferatu, of which you might have noticed I'm a fan (here is my review) -- this movie is out on VOD right this very moment! So if you missed it in theaters... well I think it's still in theaters, so go to a theater dammit. But if you're not able, rent it now. Fine! But that's not physical -- you can pre-order the 4K blu-ray right here, which streets on February 18th. The disc is loaded with special features, including excitingly an "extended cut" which I believe adds like 20 minutes to the movie? A lot of people complained the film was too long as is but I am not one of those people and can't wait to soak in the world Eggers created a bit longer. My assumption is there will be more of the side characters, and seeing as how the relationship between Aaron Taylor-Johnson & Emma Corrin's characters is a thread I really love in the film that felt a bit too brief to me I'd love more of them. (Anyone saying ATJ is the weak link in the film is incorrect -- I think it's his best work ever.)

But wait -- that's not all! Another masterpiece got an announcement -- the folks at Umbrella Entertainment down in Austrailia have announced their 4K box-set of The Cell director Tarsem's long long long out-of-print 2006 The Fall starring Lee Pace. This movie basically vanished the movie is arrived, flopping in theaters and barely making a dent on home video but last year a 4K restoration appeared and this is the first announcement of its imminent homeward drop. I am recommending patience and some caution here though if you're in the U.S. -- Mubi released the 4K restoration here in the U.S. and my guess is they'll be dropping a 4K disc of their own here in the States that will be far more reasonably priced and just hasn't been announced yet. I ordered Umbrella's box myself because...

... Umbrella is in my opinion making the best, most beautiful physical media sets in the business right now,. But they are pretty expensive and shipping is outrageous if you don't buy enough to get yourself over the free shipping threshold. What I do is I usually wait for several things to be announced over the course of a few months and then I get them all in one big splurge. Thankfully Umbrella also announced a box-set of Thai horror movies and the tremendous 2004 horror film Shutter (first time on 4K anywhere) so that wasn't difficult this time. These all hit in May -- when Mubi announces the U.S. version I will come back and post again!

In more immediate news -- instant gratification, baby! -- three Quentin tarantino movies hit 4K today, including his greatest film of them all 1997's Jackie Brown. That along with both of the Kill Bill films can be bought on Lionsgate's website, where they've begun putting out special editions of their films! A wonderful development for us physical media nerds when a lot of studios seem to be taking the exact opposite approach and turning their backs on physical releases so they can make you rent occasional access to them on streaming services forever and ever, isntead of woning the damn movie permanently as the movie gods truly intended. We love to see it! Coming up next from Liosgate are special editions of You're Next and The Third Man, which can also be bought at that link. Everybody give Lionsgate a hand!
