If you can look at those eight shots from 1976's Alice Sweet Alice and not immediately need to re-watch Alice Sweet Alice you're a better, far better, person than I -- I just watched this movie last week (thanks to Arrow's super sweet new blu-ray about to hit) and I could re-watch it again right now due to just staring at those frames. But we're getting ahead of ourselves! This movie makes us excited. We need to hit the jump for the rest of this bloody scene...

As you can see there Aunt Annie (Jane Lowry) doesn't actually die in this scene, making this one of our few cheats when it comes to our "Thursday's Ways Not To Die" series which is supposed to focus on, you know, movie death scenes and all. it's right there in the title. But no Aunt Annie lives to be go on and be totally annoying another day...
I know you're going to think I'm making fun of her but I think Lowry gives a really fun performance in this film, and I was surprised to see on her IMDb page that this and a single unnamed "After School Special" five years later were her only acting credits. Movies didn't need shrewish overbearing aunt characters in the 1980s or what?
Anyway as I mentioned above Arrow is putting out a really stellar 2K restoration of this movie onto blu-ray this upcoming Tuesday and if you think you've seen this movie before I can promise you you've never seen it like this. The images I've used for this post above are what I was used to seeing with this film but they're off the old copies floating around -- the blu-ray makes this movie look like a million bucks. A couple million, even. Arrow did a spectacular job with it -- it's like looking at a whole different movie.

The disc is also loaded with interviews and other special features of note -- what a blessing, this golden age of obscure and under-loved genre flicks getting deluxe treatment. Anyway have I got any ASA fans in the house? I hope this update gets more people to check it out -- and if not that hey look it's also on Amazon Prime too! Their copy isn't the remastered edition though, it looks as grimy as we're used to, but with a movie this nuts you take it where you can.

She sure is! I think that's why the movie's stuck around for as long as it has, since it has the cache of being her first (non TV) movie. They've probably been able to keep it in circulation on her name. That said she's barrrrrely in it.
Although I've only seen this movie via a grainy VHS tape, I still loved it. Great flick with an amazing cast--but it's PAULA ("Alice") SHEPPARD who's the standout. What an astonishing performance! And--where are you, Paula Sheppard??
She is absolutely terrific, I agree. The film is so much better shot and acted than seems at all logical, given its low budget and crew of newbies.
