5 Off My Head - Franny Forever

.
Busy busy birthday day! Besides it being Joss Whedon's and knife-wielding underpants-enthusiast Jason Mraz's birthdays today, it's also the day when one of my all-time favorite actresses is turning 52 years old. Frances McDormand, come on down!

I looked through my previous posts on Franny and was shocked and dismayed to discover that I'd never done a post of this sort for her, so situation rectified. In her honor, a list of my five favorite performances of hers.

Sara Gaskill, Wonder Boys
"My God, I wear the same scent as a transvestite."
Marge Gunderson, Fargo
"Say, Lou, didya hear the one about the guy
who couldn't afford personalized plates,
so he went and changed his name to J3L2404? "
Abby, Blood Simple
"Fact is, he's ANAL, Ray!"
Jane, Laurel Canyon
"Well who plans on a change of plan?
I mean, that would be sorta paranoid,
don't you think? "
Jane, Friends With Money
"Did you know she has never actually seen his asshole?"

Friends With Money is seriously one of her most underrated performances. The moment where her and Jennifer Aniston are walking through the farmer's market and she not-so-subtly coughs out "ASSHOLE" to the guy who cut her off in the parking lot seriously had me laughing all the way through the next scene.

Happy Birthday, Frances!

Wow. I guess I have to disagree with you and Dame James because Friends With Money is one of the few times I've found her tedious instead of amazing. I'd replace that one with Short Cuts. But I'm very happy to see the love for her work in Laurel Canyon and Wonder Boys as well as, of course, Fargo.

Blasphemy, Scott! Blasphemy!

No, I have to say that I would've once thought so, that it'd be impossible to find her acting anything but sublime, but then I saw Burn After Reading and I thought she was the weak link in that and so I've gotten over my one-time "She's perfect!" stance.

But I do think she's terribly funny in FWM.

her dimwittedness in burn after reading? so perfectly clueless.

i'll love her forever for fargo alone, but i do also love her in wonder boys, laurel canyon (for banging alessandro nivola alone), and so utterly perfect as the mom in almost famous.
