... you can learn from
Steve Martin: It was more than wind rain, and lighting. Much more. I wasn't just sure what it was. No one was sure. No one except the natives, and they were positive. They said it was Godzilla.
In 1956 the Americanized version of the original 1954 classic Gojira was released in U.S. theaters as Godzilla: King of the Monsters!, inserting the story of an American reporter hilariously named Steve Martin and played by Raymond Burr into the proceedings. Steve Martin just kind of keeps showing up and commenting on the proceedings for the dimbulb audiences back home who couldn't possibly just watch a movie with subtitles -- it's annoying to watch now but part of me worries that Godzilla might not have become Godzilla without this version, so we'll allow it. What I am saying is that no, I won't build a time machine with the express purpose of going back to 1956 to burn the prints of this, even though I will always watch the original 1954 masterpiece and this version can rot. That said -- happy birthday, Raymond Burr! I don't blame you for this nonsense. I don't even blame him for doing it again thirty years later with Godzilla 1985, the Americanized version of The Return of Godzilla. He said they paid him a shit-ton of money to do it, and who can argue with that?
