This post's title has me imagining a series of CMYBN sequel books where Elio becomes a Jessica Fletcher type, solving mysteries around gorgeous rural Italy while fucking peaches on the side -- needless to say I would read the hell out of that series. But the actual 'Call Me By Your Name' Mystery is why the Sony Classics Instagram account posted the above video this afternoon with the caption "Tomorrow..." It's not any sort of CMBYN anniversary -- personally I'm thinking they might be announcing a standalone copy of the film in 4K. It's already gotten a 4K release inside of Sony's great big box-set alongside a pile of other amazing movies, but it is really overdue its own separate release. Maybe even one with a bunch of new special features! That would rule. It is crazy to realize that the movie is turning 10 in January, counting from its premiere at Sundance in January of 2017. A standalone 4K in time for that 10th anniversary makes a lot of sense. But who knows! Could be something else. I have no idea what that would be (a new vinyl of the soundtrack?) but I guess we'll find out tomorrow! I have long given up on a sequel ever happening. Although I did discover, while looking around just now, that a graphic novel of André Aciman's book IS coming out this August, which was news to me. I don't think that's what Sony is posting about but we'll see. Anyway that's out August 11th and you can pre-order it right here. The slutty anime cover-art is sending me lol: 

In Space No One Can Hear Barry Jenkins Scream

It hasn't been the greatest week on record just in the general sense of, you know, everything! But here is one good nice story to come out of it, one which hopefully come to fruition as long as, you know, "everything" doesn't murder us first. THR is reporting (thx Mac) that good and proper movie star (we can call him one now right?) Glen Powell is going to make a movie with good and proper auteur (we can definitely call him that) Barry Jenkins to make a movie! And there won't be any animated wildebeests this time -- it's about human beings and for adults this time! It's called The Natural Order and it's based on a story by Coco screenwriter Matthew Aldrich and all we know beyond that right now is that it's "a sci-fi thriller centering on the search for eternal life." I will watch a Barry Jenkins sci-fi thriller! And even better I will watch a Barry Jenkins sci-fi thriller starring Glen Powell! So sign me up. In all seriousness this sounds like a solid compromise between Barry making the tiny independent masterpieces he'd been making and then churning out depressing IP nonsense like the Lion King sequel  because that's the only sort of trash Hollywood is interested in. So bring it on. 

The Lovely Bones

Timothée Chalamet and the Bones and All crew are all on the cover of Variety this week and there's a big interview with everybody worth a read, and even better the photoshoot is a good one -- after a couple of shoots that were too much too much (see here for prime example) this basic black leather and bountiful curls look is sending me, truly. There are several choice bits from the interview that are vital, I really recommend reading the entire thing, but because I'm me I will quote Luca saying something new on the possibility of his Call Me By Your Name sequel:

"I would love to make a second and third and fourth chapter of all my movies,” Guadagnino says. “Why? Because I truly love the actors I work with, so I want to repeat the joy of doing what we did together.” However, when it comes to “Call Me by Your Name,” Guadagnino says, “there is no hypothesis, so there is no movie. It’s a wish and a desire, and I have not made up my mind about what would be the story.” When asked if the film could still include Hammer’s character, he says, “Yeah, of course.” Then he presents another potential storyline for a sequel — following Mafalda, the housekeeper, played by Vanda Capriolo, who resides in Elio’s family’s summer home. “Which is divine,” he says. “I would be very interested in seeing what is the life of Mafalda when she’s not around the family.”

The Mafalda movie! LOL this man just says anything, no filter, and I love him for it. I think like ten people, including both Luca and me, would be excited about a Mafalda movie. There is a terrific chat with director Luca Guadagnino up at i-D Magazine today that's mostly about his cannibal romance Bones and All (out in theaters on November 18th, here is my review!) but also some on his upcoming tennis movie Challengers with Josh O'Connor and Zendaya and Mike Faist, and also a little about fashion, and oh he also drops this bomb:

ID: Is the festival journey of Bones and All the main thing that’s consuming you right now?

Luca: Well, I’m preparing a new movie. I’m working on my design practice. I am trying to rest. I’m producing other movies.

ID: It’s never just one thing?

Luca: No.

ID: Do you like it that way?

Luca: I think I do, but I also think that maybe one day I’ll change that. To clear my mind.

ID: The new movie you’re working on, do people know anything about it?

Luca: No, no one does. It’s very secret.

ID: At what point do you want to reveal that?

Luca: When the movie is finally done.

Okay so... there's that. Luca's attached himself to so many projects over the past few years this could be anything, up to and including his Call Me By Your Name sequel... although Timmy's schedule is a little heavy for that, so let's not get ahead of ourselves on that front.

Although (cue me getting ahead of myself on that)  all they'd need is a few squirreled away weeks, lord knows. I will flash you back now to the very first post I did on CMBYN in May of 2016 when nobody knew anything about the movie -- it hadn't been announced, nor would anybody much have cared at the time if they had since Timmy wasn't a thing (I barely paid attention to him in that post) and Luca's films were strictly art-house. It was only a blip of a rumor as it shot, and only became a thing in the following months... and yes I like to think my relentless shrieking about it maybe had a little bit of an effect. It's one of my few indulgences, although me that. But hyping my ego aside all I'm really saying here is they managed to shoot the first film without anybody noticing -- it would be harder in 2023-23 but not entirely impossible if that was what they wanted to do.

My honest guess though is this is something smaller -- could be another fashion movie like his short film The Staggering Girl, or could even be another documentary like his Ferragamo doc that came out earlier this month. We will unfortunately just have to wait and see. Still... one does get tickled, thinking about them dropping news of a finished CMBYN sequel out of nowhere. And yes as Luca's said many times his idea for a "sequel" is very different from what we normally associate with the word -- I don't foresee it having much to do with Andre Aicman's book Find Me at all, for one. He just wants to make The Further Adventures of Elio, basically.

In case you thought whisper silent nails had been pounded in the coffin lid of a Call Me By Your Name Part II: The Peach's Revenge happening well director Luca Guadagnino has other ideas! He was asked at Telluride this week where he screened his Bones and All with Timothee Chalamet about the possibility of a sequel again, for the two hundredth time, and he's still saying it could happen. Of course he's been saying some variation on this for going on five years now -- here's basically the same thing in 2018. He usually brings up the "Antoine Doinel" movies of Truffaut's, all following the character played by Jean-Pierre Léaud over the course of twenty years. Which I guess if you're gonna go for it go for the moon!

Scream Yourself To Sleep Tonight

I'm trying real hard to ignore all the news about the new Scream movie because people have now seen it and are feeling the need to trumpet that fact all over Twitter -- that said I am seeing it on Tuesday myself, and yes I will be reviewing it so stay tuned! But this news isn't about the new movie: it's about the four previous ones, so I can go there. Specifically, the score to all four films is being released in a massive vinyl boxed-set in June! 

Four blood red records containing composer Marco Beltrami's music from the four Wes Craven films, and it's apparently loaded with never-before-released material to boot. Any Scream geek must have! It's out on June 10th and you can pre-order it at this link. I'll share the entire press release along with a trailer for the vinyl (which is apparently a thing that happens now) and the entire tracklists right here after the jump...

My Name, It's Being Called

I didn't really expect to burst into tears at some movie news this morning, but so it goes with anything Call Me By Your Name related yes even here four years on -- and if you missed MNPP's thorough CMBYN coverage well here's a good place to get started. Anyway no it's not news about the film's once-rumored sequel, which, well, I can't imagine that happening any time soon. It's something much simpler and much much more selfish, with regards to me in particular -- the movie is going to be screening here in New York again next month. And not just any ol' place -- it's going to be screening at The Paris Theater, where I saw it definitely more than half the 20 times I saw the film in the theater during its run.

Yes one of those times Timmy was there in person, totally swamped by groupies (which I suppose I was one of) -- you can read my account of that night along with video from the Q&A, right here. Aaaaanyway back to my point The Paris was screening the film right in the thick of Moviepass being a thing so it cost me nothing to go see the film there a dozen times, and a dozen times give or take I went, straight to my prime seat in the front row center. The Paris closed up last year when its lease expired, which was very sad, but then Netflix bought it, which was the opposite. The first movie I saw in the theater once things started re-opening this year was I got to see my number one movie of 2020, Charlie Kaufman's I'm Thinking of Ending Things, thanks to the Paris. (I posted about that here.) 

Anyway Netflix bought the theater but they're turning it into a real repertory theater now -- it won't just be Netflix movies, and today they announced their official plans for the next month or so, which marks their official official reopening. The first week is programmed by The Forty-Year-Old Version creator Radha Blank and is absolutely stellar, including The Apartment, Dog Day Afternoon, Fish Tank, Waiting For Guffman -- just a stunning and killer line-up. And then after that they have a month-long series called "Paris is For Lovers" which will showcase films that had their premiere at the Paris Theater and also were love stories...

... which is where Call Me By Your Name rears its luscious head. But it's not just that fave of mine -- oh no. Other titles include Maurice, Carol, Metropolitan, Amelie, Belle du Jour, Howard's End, The House of Mirth... I could keep listing and listing, but how about I just put the theater's press release here on the site and let them do their own talking. Hit the jump for it...

Who Wore It Best?

Since I was already feeling pretty horn-y today thanks to Lil Nas' new music-video for his song "Montero (Call Me By Your Name)" -- which sees the openly gay artist taking the advice of every Christian motherfucker who's ever put us down and going to Hell, only to have a good ass time with it (and you should read this piece at Variety, I agree with every word) -- I'm carrying that Horn-y energy over to wishing the actor Ed Skrein a happy birthday... and you might be all what? Huh? How? And I am here to remind you that Skrein and his co-star Chiwetel Ejiofor already made us wanna strap ourselves onto a giant horned beast back in 2019, in the Maleficent sequel. It was weird, but so goes life.

Armie Hammer's Messy Marriage The Movie

This wasn't even the biggest news that I didn't get around to posting about yesterday -- did you know that yesterday was the 20th anniversary of Darren Aronofsky's Requiem For a Dream as well as the 25th anniversary of the films Copycat, The Doom Generation, and Leaving Las Vegas? Well you wouldn't have if you only got your updates from this shitty website! -- but I figure this gives me a chance to post a picture of Armie Hammer, it's worth a backtrack. Armie got a new movie! It's an action-comedy called Shotgun Wedding and it will have him starring opposite Jennifer Lopez as a couple who force their family to travel for an expensive "Destination Wedding" only to have their entire wedding party kidnapped by gun-wielding maniacs. So kind of like Armie's film Hotel Mumbai, but with less splattered brains and more yuks. Sign me up! (Actually this sounds like a movie I'll hate but we'll see.)

In related news there's a new video chat with Armie over at Collider where he talks about Rebecca and junk (thx Mac) and he says he thinks that Luca Guadagnino should wait to make the Call Me By Your Name sequel after ten full years have passed, which would mean we're talking 2027. (He also jokes that he'd look mid-40s doing it while Timmy would still look 23, because he's clearly heard your catty comments about how much he's aged, haha.)

Good Morning, World

I know, I know, -- you're thinking to yourselves, "What is Jason bringing up Call Me By Your Name for AGAIN? In 2020? In this economy???" Well here's why, lil' missy -- tomorrow marks the third anniversary of my first viewing of the film at the New York Film Festival, when I stumbled out of the theater in a daze (hey, remember movie theaters?), came back to my office, and pounded out one of my favorite (definitely my most personal) pieces of writing ever, this piece here. I'd write about it a million times more -- the longest most substantial piece is here but you can find links to all of the most important pieces at this link -- but you never forget your first... as Call Me By Your Name taught us. Of course we're still hearing about Luca making a sequel -- even just this week Armie talked about it -- but we've still got time before we know whether the "every five years" timeline that Luca's spoken of (he spoke of wanting to meet back up with Elio every five years) is a thing or not. For now, let's just savor the experience that was. Was it ever.

Armie Hammer Thirty-Five Times

Armie Hammer's on the cover of the new British GQ (thx Mac) and the chat with him in the magazine is mostly dark shit -- typical, given our world, and what he's been dealing with this year. I don't blame him. The part about his COVID quarantine with his family making him feel like an animal with its leg trapped in a snare? Jinkies. Anyway I'm glad he went and got himself some therapy, which he details in the piece, and we only wish the best for our Hammer. (Even if he gingerly steps towards the political both-siderism BS he recently pulled on Twitter, which, Armie, NO.)

Anyway since none of that stuff's fun to quote I considered quoting what he says about his mustache, seen in a couple of the photos -- he calls it "part hairy biker, part 1970s pervert" -- but then I saw the interviewer asks him about the CMBYN sequel and well obviously we need to quote that:

GQ: Any news on Find Me, the follow-up to Call Me By Your Name? 

Armie: Not really. I’ve been talking to Luca [Guadagnino, the director], but we haven’t got into it. I haven’t even read the book. I know Luca hasn’t got a full script yet, although he knows what he wants to do with the story, so I don’t know how similar or dissimilar it will be to Find Me the novel. I know if we end up doing it, it’s more important for me to focus on Luca’s vision than to focus on Find Me. The book will be a supplemental thing. 

GQ:  And the world will keep getting excited about this movie with Timothée Chalamet… 

Armie:  I know! The world will keep getting excited, which is a double-edged sword because the more excited they get, the bigger chances are of them watching and going, “This sucks!” But pressure makes diamonds, so here’s to more pressure!

Hoo boy, this is some news today! Variety is reporting that our bellissimo director boyfriend Luca Guadagnino has signed on to direct a new remake of Scarface. Word is that the latest script was written by the Coen Brothers (!!!) and it'll be set once again in Los Angeles. Can I just say...

We know that Luca knows how to do remakes right -- well anyone of the (correct) opinion that his re-do of Dario Argento's Suspiria is a stone-cold masterpiece does, anyway -- so color me fuckin' intrigued. Save Pfeiffer (obviously, perfection) and some of the over-the-top gruesomeness (oh and Steven Bauer's tight pants, I guess) I've never been too infatuated with Brian De Palma's 1983 film -- it has its moments but Pacino's just way too fucking much. And yes I am fully aware that De Palma wanted Way Too Fucking Much, but it's way too fucking much. 

Of course all this makes me wonder about is all the other stuff Luca's attached himself to -- there's the remake of Lord of the Flies for one, and well yeah yes indeed for another there's the Call Me By Your Name sequel, which he keeps insisting he's going to do, despite all of You People (not me!) whinging about it. What will actually be next for Luca once things are happening in the world again? Besides his HBO series We Are Who We Are I mean, which he's actively in post-production on right now for a probable end-of-year drop. Speaking of, hello Tom Mercier...

I thought I'd CMBYN'd myself out for this quarantine when I live-tweeted the movie the other week but I just noticed that today is the great Amira Casar's 49th birthday and how can we not mention our beloved Mrs. Perlman?

That quote -- which I translated using Google so apologies if it's at all mangled -- comes from you betcha it does Luca Guadagnino talking to the Spanish website La Republica about a Call Me By Your Name sequel, giving us the clearest indication -- as in he said it, with words -- that the sequel is happening and that every damn actor is gonna be back. It's not the first time Luca's made it clear he wants to do the sequel -- he's said it several times, and it's not too outlandish given Andre Aciman released a book that did just that last fall -- but this is the first time he's been so definitive about things. If the translation's right, anyway. So this was a nice thing to read during quarantine. I like to think about the peach.

In related news I don't think I ever linked to this other interview with Luca at Vulture that happened a couple of weeks ago, wherein he shared how he's been spending his quarantine. It's exactly how you'd expect, bless him.

Now that Luca Guadagnino is done hanging out with Synonyms stud Tom Mercier in Paris for their Fashion Week -- Mercier stars in Luca's forthcoming HBO series We Are What We Are, talked about previously here -- he's headed over to Sundance for a doc about truffle farmers that he produced (sure why not). Deadline chatted with him there (thx Mac) and asked him what he's planning on this year, and he came up with lots:

"“I’m putting all my focus and concentration into We Are Who We Are and Born To Be Murdered,” he says. He is producing the latter, a Greece-set thriller about a vacationing couple, played by John David Washington and Alicia Vikander, who fall trap to a violent conspiracy. “I’m very enthusiastic about the film. It’s going to be a wonderful, passionate surprise.”

The Suspiria and I Am Love director says a busy schedule has left less time for writing over the past two years, but that the sequel to Call Me By Your Name remains on the agenda. “I’ve spoken about my ideas to Timothée [Chalamet] and Armie [Hammer] and we’re all eager.”

Blood On The Tracks, a project inspired by Bob Dylan’s seminal 1975 album, and Warner Bros’ Lord Of The Flies update, are two of the movies that could come together in 2020, he says. The writing process is starting on the latter, and the former is still being put together, he explains.

There was a fly in that scene that that gif doesn't get across, you'll just have to believe me. (Nobody's thinking about flies anymore, are they?) Anyway I was just recently saying (here) that I'd embraced my status as one of the last true believers that a CMBYN sequel would still happen so it's good to see I share that space with, you know, the director himself.

... to remind y'all that Andre Aciman's Call Me By Your Name sequel book detailing the further adventures of Oliver and Elio called Find Me was, swoon, properly released today -- in a funny stroke of coincidence as mentioned earlier I won't be getting home to get my mitts on my copy until late tonight because I'm hopefully fingers crossed seeing Little Women tonight. Trading one Timmy for another! Today will be the death of me.

15 Days Until Elio's Return

Andre Aciman's Find Me, his sequel to his book Call Me By Your Name, hits in fifteen days, y'all. Fifteen days and we'll know the further adventures of Elio and his dad and that cowboy nerd from America... I've refused to put too much mind or energy towards this before now but all of a sudden this morning it's struck me like James' proverbial giant peach fell out of the sky and onto my face. 

I know that EW posted a little excerpt from the book last week -- click here if you want to read it, which I did not; I'll wait for the whole damn thing, thank you. I'm enjoying this feeling of anticipation right now anyway. I should probably dig up my dog-eared copy of the first book and give it a re-read before October 29th, since my recollection's no doubt been clouded by Guadagnino's film, which isn't super different but is different enough. Have any of you gone back yet to read Elio's Original Adventures in preparation for his imminent further exploits?

Call Me By Your Name author Andre Aciman just tweeted out this, our first look at his advanced copy of Find Me, the book's sequel or whatever you want to call it. It's a sequel. We all agree on the word "sequel" right? That word has come to feel so old-fashioned now that I hesitate even when I oughtn't. Anyway see our previous post on the book here and you can pre-order yours right here which, oddly, I just noticed I haven't done yet myself! WTF? Well I suppose I have time -- it's not out until October 29th, otherwise known as two-thousand six-hundred and twenty-six hours from right this very minute. Set your swatches, peachy pals.

--- Hero Worship - Now that he's Batman (try hearing that phrase in your head in anything but Christian Bale's rasp, I dare you) Robert Pattinson is abandoning the art-house movies that made us respect him, the sellout - he's dropped out of Joanna Hogg's sequel to The Souvenir, which is apparently a thing that's happening? (I'm just teasing Rob, by the way, save your hate mail.) On the Souvenir tip though I saw the film last week and thought it was fine but I don't really entirely get the rapturous responses it got earlier this year. It's certainly aware of its privilege (the main character expresses some guilt) but that didn't make the privilege of its world feel any less exhausting to maneuver as a viewer.

--- My Commitment - This interview is a real long one so you'll have to set aside some time for it but if you haven't yet read Collider's long chat with our beloved character actress and saint Beth Grant then I recommend you do - give or take a couple of big star names its interesting folks from below the title like this who have quirks and are individuals that I'd much rather read pieces like this devoted to. Beth has stories and has lived and is a hoot.

--- Jude Island - Jude Law is heading back to TV again, this time with nary a Popemobile in sight, to make The Third Way for HBO (alongside ITV in the UK) -- it's a six-part miniseries (produced by the guy who made the original Utopia) that sounds kind of like The Island of Dr. Moreau or maybe The Wicker Man, something like that, with an island and a bunch of isolated weirdos and hallucinations. Basically me on vacation. Speaking of vacations Jude was recently on his honeymoon (congrats!) in Sardinia and JJ got a bunch of pictures of him looking mighty fine a la that shot to the right, see them here. (Thx Mac)

--- More Scary - When we listed our most anticipated movies of the remainder of 2019 one of the runners-up was the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark film that Trollhunter director André Øvredal has coming out in August -- well Rue Morgue sat down with Andre to chat about his next much anticipated by me flick, which is an adaptation of Stephen King's short story The Long Walk, read that chat here. TLW is kind of a teenaged They Shoot Horses Don't They, or maybe Forrest Gump meets Battle Royale. Okay I'm just saying movie titles now. You get the idea.

--- Ears and Ears - I am a couple of episodes behind on Years and Years but Russell Tovey's already gone and signed on for another television miniseries in his homeland -- this one's called Flesh and Blood and it's another tale of a large sprawling family in which he's a sibling, this time about a trio whose old-age mum (played by Imelda Staunton) gets romanced by a dude (Stephen Rea) they don't trust.

--- Gesserit Who - Denis Villeneuve is currently shooting his Dune movie with Timothee Chalamet & Co -- see some pictures we shared a couple of weeks back right here if you missed 'em -- and that's probably going to be going on for awhile, and now an even longer while because he's also making a Dune TV series now too. It'll be about the Bene Gesserit, the female religious order of Frank Herbert's stories who predict all sorts of spicy shenanigans with their witchery. In the movie Rebecca Ferguson is playing Lady Jessica who's a part of the order, so perhaps she'll be a part of the television show too; Villenueve is only set to direct the pilot.

--- Man o' Paradise - Josh Hartnett, so very good on Penny Dreadful, is returning to TV for a series called Paradise Lost, which apparently has nothing whatsoever to do with the Milton book -- it's about a married couple (Hartnett alongside Bridget Regan from Jane the Virgin) who return to the husband's Mississippi hometown only to "uncover shameful secrets that irrevocably change the lives of everyone involved." That is vague enough a description that I have absolutely no idea what this show might be, except they also call it a "Southern Gothic mystery" which helps a little. Barbara Hershey and Nick Nolte are also set to co-star.

--- Cue the Keymaster - It's become completely impossible to keep straight what's happening with the Ghostbusters franchise - I think where we stand is Jason Reitman is making a direct sequel to his father's films with all the original 'Busters in tow? Anyway Sigourney Weaver has let slip that she's returning for the movie as good ol' dog-lady Dana Barrett once more, so whatever it is I am there.
