Although we've gotten a few photos of Jonathan Majors and Glen Powell on the set of their Korean fighter pilot flick Devotion over the past year or so -- see here and here and especially here -- today Vanity Fair has the first big batch of official photos from the film, alongside some words from the filmmakers, check it all out here. Well check out the words -- I swiped the pictures, per usual and they're all below. This is one of those movies I've been posting about non-stop since I first heard about it -- because of my Jonathan Majors obsession natch -- that I am now going to be annoyed watching other people talk about, because I feel some ownership of it for absolutely no justifiable reason whatsoever.
Anyway one assumes these photos are being dropped this week specifically because this week is when the new Top Gun movie comes out, which also happens to star one Mr. Glen Powell as a plane ace (also: see this week's banner!) and we'll no doubt be seeing plenty of press on him... like that half-shirtless Men's Health cover I shared the other day. (ETA Just posted some snaps of Glen rocking a flight-suit hard at a party over here.) Devotion isn't out until October, which situates it for awards season -- this is going to be a very different movie from Top Gun, pretty sure. Let's start the Jonathan Majors Oscar Talk now then! And hit the jump for all of the photos...
I usually complain that the photos that W Magazine chooses for its annual "Best Performances" issue are too weird, but this year they're kind of boring? Not at all the tacky mess they tend to go for. The Michelle Yeoh ones are fun though (see my tweet about those here) and you can see them all at this link to make up your own minds, but for here at MNPP I obviously had to snatch the Jonathan Majors ones -- he is our cover boy this week, after all.
Read the chat with Mr. Majors right here -- he's being recognized for his fine work in the Korean War film Devotion, which I seemed to have liked more than most people (this honor today notwithstanding). But then I guess I probably can't be entirely trusted when it comes to Jonathan these days as I'm over-my-head infatuated! But a big part of that is his talent! It's not just his traps. Not just. (PS Devotion is now streaming on Paramount+ -- watch it!)
This news was tailor built to my attention and yet it's taken me five full days to get around to it -- if Jonathan Majors wants to come slap me around for my ineptitude I welcome it, really I do. (Really, I do.) I suppose if he'd have gotten naked on this week's episode of Lovecraft Country (like he has on every other one) I might have gotten to it sooner? Ball's in your court, Jonathan! Anyway Variety reported five full days ago (thx Mac) that Majors has signed on to make a new movie called Devotion, a Cold-War-era Navy fighter pilots movie, in which his co-star will be...
... Glen Powell! Yes that Glen Powell! I know there's only one Glen Powell, whatever, he's that one. (Sidenote: we actually already knew that Powell was making this movie -- the Majors news is the new news.) Anyway the two actors will be playing best buds and co-pilots whose friendship is tested when one's shot down behind enemy lines. Seeing as how Powell's got the Top Gun sequel coming out at some point I guess he really digs being in the cockpit and fraternizing with his wingmen, all of which sounds good to us.
Another point of interest -- the movie's being directed by J.D. Dillard, who made the terrific (or so I personally thought) horror flick Sweetheart last year. And it's based on a non-fiction book by Adam Makos from 2015 about a true story -- I would ask if any of y'all have read it but I feel like there's a real small overlap between people who come to MNPP and people who read non-fiction military books. But I could be wrong! We all got our kinks...
Don't know why I was surprised to see the first teaser trailer for Devotion, the aviator flick starring Jonathan Majors and Glenn Powell that I've been keeping my scope trained on for quite awhile now, pop up today -- when we got those official photos earlier this week I'd mentioned that it made sense, them tagging along with the Top Gun Maverick hype, given the Aeroplane Plus Glen Powell of it all. (And funny enough some of these flight scenes look like they were shot on the same locations to my eye, although I'm probably way off.) Anyway tThis movie is out in October and this trailer makes it look like a grand showcase for the great and deserving-of-a-showcase Mr. Majors, check it out below...
Just a couple of weeks until the fighter-pilot drama Devotion opens at Toronto Fest and its leading man and MNPP beloved Jonathan Majors is out there doing the work already -- specifically he's the cover-guy for this past weekend's issue of the New York Times magazine, which you can read here if NYT will let you (thx Mac). I'm as ever past my allotted free reads so I cannot, alas. If he says anything interesting therein let me know. I did manage through my wily means to scrounge up the five photos of Mr. Majors though, which were taken by the ever-reliable Ryan Pfluger, and those I have for you (for free and everything!) right on after the jump...
Even though I'm sure he's rightly in mourning for his Lovecraft Country co-star slash genius-in-his-own-right Michael K. Williams (and a big "Rest in Peace" that that great one) I do wanna wish the happiest of possible happy birthdays to our favorite new actor of the past couple of years, Mr. Jonathan Majors. He's turning an exquisite 32 today and if you ask me his 30s-to-be are looking rather bright. Just even by the measure of the very next year, with his villainous turns in both the third film of Creed franchise as well as the MCU, where his Kang the Conquerer, already symphonically previewed to much acclaim on Loki...
... will supposedly show up next in the Ant-Man sequel. Oh and also that WWII fighter pilot movie with Glen Powell called Devotion. Oh and also that Netflix Western with Idris Elba called The Harder They Fall. And I wouldn't be surprised if his name gets attached to a dozen more things next week, that's how hot he is. And he deserves the heat. I might have to re-watch TLBMISF for the ten-hundredth time tonight in his honor. Check our Archives on Mr. Majors here, they are thorough. Have a fine day, Mr. Majors.
A new photo of newly-minted-Emmy-nominee Jonathan Majors in his forthcoming flick Devotion (via), which I've told you about previously... it co-stars Glen Powell and tells the true story of some stranded fighter pilots during the Korean War. As with anything Majors-related we are on this. Also I just noticed via the film's IMDb page that there's an actress named Serinda Swan (she's known for the shows Ballers and Inhumans and Graceland) playing Elizabeth Taylor in it??? If you click on her name there you'll see a picture and I can actually kinda see a resemblance? Especially the eyes. Anyway I'm guessing there's a USO show featured in the film, which is the only way I can make sense of Elizabeth Taylor being a character in this, haha. Maybe they reveal that in between shooting Little Women and Father of the Bride Liz actually bombed Seoul on her weekends off. Forgotten history is nuts, y'all!
Due to the (ongoing) pandemic it's been somewhat muted, my star-fuckery over the past couple of years -- you tend to not go to tons of live events when there's a raging illness suffocating thousands of people per week. But I've been making my way slowly back into the world in dribs and drabs -- this year's New York Film Fest really got that ball rolling -- and so last night I found myself at a screening and Q&A for the film Devotion, out next week, starring Jonathan Majors and Glen Powell. I have talked about this movie some here! Just some, haha. I'd already seen the movie (just last week) but knowing those two were going to be there for the screening last night got me back -- I'll review the movie next week, but for now I just wanna share some photos.
Since I risked the plague and all I might as well get some "community engagement" out of it! Also there was actor Thomas Sadowski -- who is apparently married to actress Amanda Seyfried, and she was there and introduced the movie, which you'll see below -- and director JD Dillard. After the screening and Q&A there was a reception and I stood closely, awkwardly, near both Jonathan and Glen at the bar without talking to them, aka my usual creep routine. It was great! Anyway I took a bunch of photos and a few videos, and if you hit the jump you'll see all of it...
I feel like there have been an abnormal number of trailers released for Devotion, the Korean War movie starring Jonathan Majors and Glen Powell as pilots who get themselves in some true-story war-time shenanigans (see my previous posts here) that is now coming out at Thanksgiving-time. I have only previous posted one, right here, but I swear there have been a couple I've purposefully skipped posting. So why am I posting this one today? Because look at that shot of those hot boys in their whites up top, that's why dammit.
Since the last time, three weeks or so ago, that I told you to follow Glen Powell on Instagram if you weren't already (you were already) because he'd been real giving with the photos and videos from the set of his WWII pilots movie Devotion which we're looking forward to, well since then he proved himself true! He posted a ton, especially yesterday, which appears to've been wrap day, and I gathered up what I could for us. You can read more about Devotion here -- his photos mainly capture his co-stars Thomas Sadoski, Daren Kagasoff, Joe Jonas, and most importantly his co-lead our boyfriend Jonathan Majors, who's of course the thing we're most excited about here. Hit the jump(suit) for the full stash...
There is very nearly too much out this week for me to even keep a handle on, but lemme try real quick, before I take off for the evening. I always say before a holiday that I might pop back on here to update things and then never do -- of course now that I have said I never do I probably will because there's nothing I love better than proving myself foolish. Well that's not entirely true -- I also really love being lazy. So it's a battle between those two to see which wins out!
Anyway -- lotsa movies is my point! Many of which I have already reviewed or will have reviews going up for sometime this week. But let's start with a movie that falls into neither of those categories -- Rian Johnson's Knives Out sequel Glass Onion, which I saw last night (see down at the bottom of this post for some video of Johnson and a choice friend introducing the movie) but which I have no plans to review. It's hitting some theaters this week and y'all should go, it's fun. I'm not these movies most enthusiastic fan but they're fun enough. I thought the endless cameos in this one were a little much, but I am after all joyless and dead inside so your mileage will probably vary.
Seeing Jack O’Connell’s cock at this point is like having an old friend pop by for a spot of tea
Oh and another movie out this week that I have seen but don't plan on reviewing is the new Lady Chatterly's Lover with Jack O'Connell -- even though I'm not writing about it doesn't mean it's bad, though. I liked it well enough. And not just because what I tweeted above. Although, you know, that never hurts. Literally never.
As for movies that I have already reviewed that are hitting theaters this week -- most importantly there is Luca Guadagnino's cannibal romance Bones and All, obviously. Here is my review of that. I think it's awesomely good and think you should see it. It got some Indie Spirit nominations today which surprised me -- I really think the film will be too weird for awards. But good for the Spirits. (Also I might have a piece coming on this exact subject hitting some time soon as well.) And then also out this week -- although only here in NYC, I think -- is Noah Baumbach's White Noise, which I reviewed right here. It's also terrific! Greta Gerwig, baby! They dropped a trailer today, too:
As for movies that I have reviews posting later this week -- keep your eyes trained on Pajiba for my takes on the films Devotion with Jonathan Majors and Glen Powell, as well as Steven Spielberg's autobiographical fable called The Fabelmans. Maybe I will pop back in here and share those links this week when the links arrive... maybe not. It's the most exciting thing that will happen all week, this guessing game! Make sure you hold your breath! Even when you're eating mashed potatoes. Especially when eating your mashed potatoes. Happy Thanksgiving, everybody! (And don't forget to use MNPP's Amazon link to do your holiday shopping with!)
Annoying news today on Devotion, the fighter-pilot movie starring Jonathn Majors and Glen Powell -- I shared the trailer for this right here back in May -- as the film's release has been moved back a month from October to November 23rd. I mean it's good news for the movie -- a Thanksgiving release shows they're confident in it, and it's better suited for awards prospects too I suppose -- but anything that's making me wait longer is annoying, annoying, I am annoyed. I guess I'll just stare at these photos from 2017 (via) which I am fairly certain I have never seen before and make due, sigh. Hit the jump for two more...
The Scream Queen himself Glen Powell has been pretty active on social media from the set of his next movie called Devotion, the WWII pilots flick he's co-starring in opposite our boyfriend Jonathan Majors -- we told you about that film right here -- so I haven't been able to keep up with everything he's posted, but I could hardly miss today's flight-suit snap. With this and the Top Gun sequel (still) in the pipeline I think it's funny that he's become the go-to guy for pilots -- I guess that playing John Glenn (in Hidden Figures) will do that to a career. I ain't compainin'! He looks terrific in onesies.
"I too quit smoking (2013) AND find this type of pictures cool. Also, PSA: if you're feeling like you want to start smoking again, just remind yourself "I do not want my body and house to stink like stale horseshit", then go drink one more glass of water to entertain your hands and lips. Congrats, btw."
