Five Frames From ?

.

What movie is this?
.

Good Morning, World

.
Yesterday I thought I saw the actor Rafi Gavron on the subway -- it wasn't him but it would've been a weird coincidence if it had been him since I had literally finished watching George Clooney's Catch-22 (in which he is featured) just a few hours before that. And it turns out it would've been even more coincidentally appropriate since it's his 30th birthday today and here we are, wishing him a happy one. He's been bouncing around for quite some time now -- I recall seeing him for the first time in Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist a whopping 11 years ago (I can't believe that movie's 11 years old now) -- and yet I keep getting left with wanting more of him, even after all this time. Yes even in A Star is Born, maybe especially in A Star is Born, where he played Lady Gaga's sleazy producer and I was desperate for, well, anything that wasn't Lady Gaga.

Anyway his role's not huge but it's pretty damned important to the narrative of Catch-22 and I thought he was very fine in it -- I actually to my surprise (I don't have a lot of faith in Clooney behind the camera) thought the whole enterprise was a success; watch the trailer here if you missed it -- so here's to hoping his 30s will find him that breakout role. Any thoughts on Rafi personally or on Catch-22 as a whole?

Quote of the Day

.
Begin, middle, end, I am riding so high on meeting John Waters last night that I'll just post about him all day -- why not? He's our everything! Call it John Waters Day. John Waters Week even, what with the new book out now and all the interviews he's giving. There's another new one over at W Magazine this afternoon worth your eyeballs effort -- I mentioned him talking about his noted absence at the Camp-themed Met Gala in my post this morning but W got him on the record about it, and also asked him what he thought of everybody's stabs at dressing "camp," here's what he had to say:

"I think that everybody really tried, and everybody got into the spirit of it. True camp was so bad it was good and they didn’t know it. But nobody goes to the Met Ball and doesn’t know what they’re doing—there's no innocence about it. And no one says the word "camp" anymore. Even 90-year-old queens don’t say that. Even if we’re sitting under a Tiffany lampshade. Maybe even at the last meeting of the Rita Hayworth fan club. People don’t know what it is. To me, camp was a secret word that gay people used and Susan Sontag exposed it in a great, great way. But then it was done. Once the secret was out, it was over. I mean, what is camp today? Is there a movie out now that’s so bad it’s great? Maybe not, because everybody is in on it. It’s not accidental... Maybe when they had Baltimore Fashion Week, which was pitiful. All the models smiled and waved—the two things you’re never allowed to do, and they were waving at their parents. [Laughs.] That was camp."

He also had a lot to say on his love for Justin Bieber, and he mentions that he loved Gregg Araki's Now Apocalypse, so check it all out at the link. On that note and speaking of camp I'm off for the long holiday weekend now -- I've got a screening of Rocketman tonight that I've got to run to! See you next Tuesday...

Killer Cyborgs From The Future

.
Didn't realize how hard I needed to see Mackenzie Davis wearing a wife-beater whilst doing ridiculous flips on the back of moving vehicles until the trailer for the new Terminator movie arrived this morning -- but I do, need it, hard. That sounded sexual? It's not really, although Mack's butch enough here (slash always) to give me pause. Anyway all these thoughts and more can be had over at The Film Experience where I went to town on the trailer this afternoon, so now you go to town and read that, please.
.

Glen Powell Nine Times

.
Top Gun sequels aside it looks like Glen Powell is officially in the rom-com business -- Deadline's reporting that the Scream Queens superstar (Chad Radwell Forever!!!) is set to star in Time After Time, an adaptation of an as-of-yet unreleased book by Lisa Grunwald (it's out on June 11th), which tells "a magical love story is set against the workings of Grand Central Terminal and the solar phenomenon known as Manhattanhenge." (I can't believe Manhattanhenge is getting it's own movie, you guys.)

Anyway the producer goes on to call it "part The Notebook, part Ghost" so I'm guessing somebody's totes dead. We'll have to wait and see if Glen gets his frequent Netflix co-star Zoey Deutsch for this one too, or if he's branching out for other gals (I dare not dream for guys) -- they have such fine chemistry I'd be fine with that. Give them all the movies! Alright enough talk, hit the jump for the rest of the pictures...

Joe Manganiello's Baseball Bottom

.
I'm a little bit hesitant to post this trailer for Joe Manganiello's Baseball Movie because man, it looks way more skippable than anything I'm calling "Joe Manganiello's Baseball Movie" should look. Anything I am able to call "Joe Manganiello's Baseball Movie" oughta look promising for the locker-room scenes alone! But there's nary a whiff of a jockstrap to be seen!
.
.
That said I am posting it anyways because the movie has "bottom" in the title, and Joe in a baseball uniform is still, all on its own, enough of a fetish object to gawk at for at least a minute or two. Watch:
.

.
Bottom of the Ninth (heh yup still funny) is hitting VOD and such on July 9th. And the rest of us can hit the jump for a couple of gifs and images I took from that trailer, along with a couple of new pictures of Joe in Men's Health magazine...

Thursday's Ways Not To Die

.

Naturally I'm in a John Waters mood since I just posted that picture of me and John braiding each other's hair while our underpants were in the freezer, you know like brand new besties do. So what better time to revisit a moment from my favorite John Waters movie -- one that I have inexplicably never included in my tributes to movie death scenes series? Oh I've included a death scene from this film before for this series...

... but never this one that sends the great Dawn Davenport to that one. It's a circle now! Cue Lion King music. Seriously though, does John Waters have more insane on-screen deaths in his movies than any other comic filmmaker? Think of all the grisly demises in Serial Mom (here is one, and here is another), or think of Grizelda sitting on that man's face in Desperate Living...

... note to self, do that scene from Desperate Living soon. Anyway if you weren't sure why John Waters was my Personal Jesus before maybe now you've got a better clue -- nobody's mixed up sex and violence, obscenity and the Divine, quite like he. Hit the jump for links to all of the Previous Ways Not to Die...

The Prince of Puke and His Loyal Subject

.
I was going to say "So I got to meet one of my idols last night" but really I met THE idol, the one -- Vincent Price is dead and this is the next greatest thing. (Along with now being on Paul Reubens' Christmas card list I have lived my life, yo.) John was in town (I can call him John know since we're besties) for his book tour, his latest one that I've told you about several times called Mr. Know-It-All being on stands now, and last night he spoke at St. Joseph's College in Brooklyn. (A Catholic School! What could be better?) Here's a brief video I took where he talks about the idea of "Camp" (with a bonus swipe at Paul Verhoeven and Showgirls!) which is now on everybody's tongues because of the recent Met Gala...
.

.
During the Q&A John admitted he wasn't invited to the Gala, which really is a repulsive oversight on their part -- can you imagine? I've been to see the show and there isn't even a single piece of John Waters filmography, not a single dress worn by Divine, in the entire exhibit. They should be ashamed of themselves. I've honestly been thinking about picketing out in front (I'm not even joking).

John generously mentioned he does have a piece in the permanent collection of The Met, and that if he had been invited the the Gala he wasn't sure what he'd have worn anyway since dressing up in costumes isn't really his thing, and he'd have ended up unforgivably being a "stick in the mud." But come on, he could've worn exactly what he's wearing on the cover of his book. Something kingly fit for the rightful King of Camp.

Oh and when I got my scratch-and-sniff card from Polyester signed by him he mentioned what I think might be a bit of news -- he let it slip that Criterion is currently figuring out how to make those smell cards, which means in the near future Criterion is either releasing Polyester on its own... or possibly they're releasing a boxed set of Waters' films! They have recently released both Female Trouble and Multiple Maniacs so it doesn't surprise me they're doing more, but Polyester wasn't the one I figured would be next and that has me wondering if they might not do a boxed set. Pray to the devils, my friends! Here's one more vid whilst I continue floating on air...

What movie is this?
.

Good Morning, World

.
I would say judging by that photo above and the one below that the actor (and frequent recipient of my lustful gaze) Salim Kechiouche is having a very nice morning according to his Instagram -- probably because his new film with director Abdellatif Kechiche called Mektoub, My Love: Intermezzo (I am guessing it's a sequel to 2017's Mektoub, My Love, which I keep forgetting I need to see) is dropping on Cannes today. I guess he's excited about that? I think we all might be. Especially if we looked in the mirror and saw Salim Kechiouche looking back at us. Anyway hit the jump for a couple more photos...

After Lannister

.
With all the hullaballoo surrounding the Game of Thrones finale the past few days -- and I think it tells you all you need to know that I haven't had much of anything to say on that after ten plus years of writing about the show! -- I missed this other Nikolaj Coster-Waldau content: his movie with Brian De Palma called Domino (which also stars his GoT co-star Carice van Houten) got a new clip! Watch:
.

.
(via) We also posted the trailer for the film back in April; it's had a seriously troubled production and De Palma's disavowed the movie but we don't even come to close to caring about all of that -- those two actors plus that director has got to turn out something worth seeing, even if only in spirts and fits. Domino supposedly hits both some theaters and VOD on May 31st.

Daniel Dae Kim Gets Lost... in Space

.
I don't believe I got around to sharing this news when it was first announced, so here's a good opportunity now that the ever gorgeous Daniel Dae Kim has gotten involved -- our beloved Toni Collette is making a sci-fi thriller called Stowaway with Anna Kendrick, and today DDK has just been added to the cast.

The movie's about what to do with a (you guessed it) stowaway on a Mars-bound spaceship (played by Wynnona Earp actor Shamier Anderson, who's pretty goddamned handsome himself and I look forward to making his acquaintance) -- Toni is the captain (I really missed the boat on a "Captain and Tennille" adjacent pun headline on this one) while Kendrick plays a medical researcher; Daniel here is the ship's biologist. I got some biology for you to study, Dr. Kim...

Pic of the Day

.
The new Vanity Fair is all Star Wars, with a huge gallery of The Rise of Skywalker photos from the set -- click here to see them all. The shot of Adam Driver and Daisy Ridley fighting in the snow (I think it's snow) is really lovely but of course I have to highlight the shot of Oscar Isaac once again doing his best Captain Tightpants impersonation, because hey you know where you are. You know what we do. The Rise of Skywalker is out on December 20th.

Everything You Ever Need To Know About Life...

... you can learn from:

Milk (2008)

Harvey Milk: I ask this... If there should be an assassination, I would hope that five, ten, one hundred, a thousand would rise. I would like to see every gay lawyer, every gay architect come out - - If a bullet should enter my brain, let that bullet destroy every closet door... And that's all. I ask for the movement to continue. Because it's not about personal gain, not about ego, not about power... it's about the "us's" out there. Not only gays, but the Blacks, the Asians, the disabled, the seniors, the us's. Without hope, the us's give up - I know you cannot live on hope alone, but without it, life is not worth living. So you, and you, and you... You gotta give em' hope... you gotta give em' hope.

The great Harvey Milk was born today, 1930.

Action Aaron Reporting For Duty

.
I was already excited despite myself about Christopher Nolan's new film because of the cast he'd gathered up -- John David Washington and Elizabeth Debicki and Robert Pattinson -- even though I've not been a fan of Nolan's last several films. (I found Dunkirk in need of some dun-work, lol I kill me.) Well now he's gone and added my beautiful boy Aaron Taylor-Johnson to that group of people and dammit, how am I supposed to put up a fight here? I am dun-for.

The film's also got a title now which I don't remember seeing before -- it's called Tenet, and they're saying it's "an action epic evolving from the world of international espionage" that's shooting across seven countries. That's also more than we knew before. What a day for news! Besides AJ they also cast Dunkirk actor Kenneth Branagh, but whatever on him. Cast Emma Thompson and we'll talk. (pic via)

Three Heads Are Better Than One

.
Did everybody see the documentary Three Identical Strangers, about the triplets who were separated at birth only to be reunited as adults and become a media sensation in the 1980s? Checking the archive I guess I never reviewed it but I remember thinking it solid -- it's such an incredible story (and it only gets weirder from that weird jumping off point somehow) that the doc didn't even have to do a lot of extra work for it to work; you were riveted from the start. Anyway word comes today that the dude who wrote the screenplay for Bohemian Rhapsody (blerg) is writing a script for a fictionalized retelling, which seems like a natural idea until you get to thinking about casting -- I'm guessing this is something they'll do with one actor and then Parent Trap it up, just thrice?

Actors love that shit! And so do I, since I always get all excited about ye olde harmless CG twincest aka what all technology was invented for. Giving an actor three different roles in one movie and letting them loose, I could see this idea exciting a lot of our best actors. But who should play Robert Shafran, David Kellman and Eddy Galland? They had a distinct look. Gimme casting ideas in the comments!

Spider-Beard

.
Jake Gyllenhaal was kind enough to gift us with that, his personalized poster for Spider-Man: Far From Home, on his Instagram this morning -- such a generous soul, that Jake. The film is out in 42 days!
.

"I go sloooow."

.
There are movies I am looking forward to this year and there are Movies I Am Looking Forward To This Year, and Jennifer Kent's long long long awaited follow-up to The Babadook called The Nightingale sits atop the latter -- ever since it caused men to toss themselves into the ocean clutching their hearts at Venice last year I have been on fire with desire. Well I don't have that much longer to burn now, as IFC has just announced an August 2nd release date for NYC & LA, and also dropped a poster & trailer. And the trailer is goooood. Watch:
.

.
Absolutely chilling -- my want went up,
which seemed impossible, until it happened.

The movie stars Aisling Franciosi (you should recognize her as the teenager that Jamie Dornan had an affair with on The Fall) as a young woman somehow wronged by Sam Claflin -- I guess she's got a thing, being wronged by men whose hotness makes the audience feel gross conflicted things about their bad behavior -- who seeks revenge across the Tasmanian wilderness in the early 1800s. Put August 2nd in your calendars, everybody! Here's the poster:
