All of the Stranger's Music

Happy news, Strangers-heads (is that a thing? Let's make that a thing) -- Emilie Levienaise-Farrouch's lovely score for Andrew Haigh's All of Us Strangers is getting a vinyl release! It's out on April 12th and you can pre-order it right here on Amazon (or at one of your fine local retailers). It's just the score mind you, so it doesn't include the two pop songs that left such an impression in that movie -- namely "The Power of Love" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood and "Always on My Mind." by Pet Shop Boys -- but you can listen to those right now anywhere. The score itself is gorgeous and I couldn't be happier about a proper release! I've become a huge fan of Emilie Levienaise-Farrouch -- her score for Living last year (which never got a vinyl release at all!) was my favorite of the year. And her music for the horror movie Censor kicks ass too. Keep hiring her, folks!

Stan the Man

I have finally reviewed my favorite movie out of Sundance -- click on over to Pajiba to read my thoughts on A Different Man, the new movie from Chained For Life director Aaron Schimberg that stars Sebastian Stan giving what I decree his best performance to date, opposite The Worst Person in the World's Renate Reinsve and Under the Skin's Adam Pearson. Or don't? I kind of think it might be a movie worth knowing as little about as possible going in -- I did and I felt rewarded by that and my review had to, out of necessity to discuss the plot, spoil some of its surprises. The movie is already owned by A24 so it will definitely have a release this year at some point so if you can hold out, hold out. If you need convincing, go forth. I will say that you should very much go see Schimberg's previous phenomonal movie Chained For Life if you haven't -- here is my review of that -- because it will give you some idea of what Schimberg likes to deal with. A Different Man feels like a continuation on the same themes.

Pics of the Day

As the Road House remake struts ever closer and closer -- it premieres on Amazon (much to director Doug Liman's chagrin) on March 21st but it will screen at SXSW a couple weeks before that -- we find ourselves being smothered in sweaty Jake stuff, and we wouldn't want it any other way. (If you missed the first trailer click here.) Today he shared some set photos on his Insta and I will dutifully parrot his PR campaign like the good little sub to his dom that I am. Hit the jump for the goods...

Aaron Taylor-Johnson Four Times

Whatever Aaron Taylor-Johnson smells like I want to know and I want to think about in extensive detail, and so using him as a cologne spokesperson seems smart to me. He's the new stud for the Armani Beauty’s Acqua di Giò campaign and if you want to read a boring press release interview about that feel free, there's one right now at THR. I'm just interested in the mphotos myself -- and thinking about Aaron's muskiness obviously -- so let's hit the jump for that (well the photos anyway, since I haven't perfected scratch-n-sniff blogging just yet)...

Good Morning, World

French actor Pierre Niney was generous enough to share with us some photos from a recent vacation on his Instagram and natch I snatched up the ones that matter to post here, and you'll see them below. But first! While I was at Sundance news of one of my favorite mini-fests of every year broke -- the schedule and line-up for the Film at Lincoln Center's annual "Rendez-vous with French Cinema" here in New York was announced! To be clear I've been so busy I haven't even had the time to look at the schedule myself but you can check it all right here. All I did notice was what I usually first notice -- the list of hot French actors whose films are included, and Pierre here was among them (and in Michel Gondry's new movie no less!). Other lovelies include Melvil Poupaud, Anders Danielson Lee (not French but whatever), Romain Duris, Vincent Lacoste, and Nahuel Pérez Biscayart of BPM fame, and Félix Lefebvre from Summer of 85. Anyway I've finally got some substantial time this morning so I'm going to go through and see what grabs my attention -- stay tuned, I'll try to post about that later. But first let us hit the jump for a little more happy go lucky Pierre...

Henry From Start To Finish

We're bookending the day with Henry Cavill -- picture it, twin Henrys and you're in the middle of that sandwich! -- because the first thing we saw this morning was the trailer for his new Guy Ritchie movie and the last thing we're seeing tonight will be a press screening of Argylle, the former Superman's spy comedy from Layer Cake and Kick-ass director Matthew Vaughn. That said obviously I'm not leading with a photo of Henry in Argylle because that ahircut he's rocking in it is too dumb for words. So enjoy the above much more flattering photo of Henry. And by "flattering" obviously I mean "fuckable until our bodies disintegrate" of course. Of course! More on me on Argylle later this week -- if you haven't watched the trailer, uhhh, here it is:

Everything You Ever Need To Know About Life...

 ... you can learn from:

Tyrannosaur (2011)

Hannah: You're a child of God.
Joseph: God ain't my fucking daddy. My daddy was a cunt,
but he knew he was a cunt. God still thinks he's God.
Nobody's told him otherwise.
Hannah: Why are you so angry at God?
Joseph: Why are you so fucking stupid?
I've met people like you all my fucking life.
Goodie goodies. Make a charity record.
Bake a cake. Save a fucking soul!
You've never eaten shit. Don't know what it's like out there.

Okay not the most cheerful "Life Lesson" there today but they can't all be "life is beautiful" (and yes I am talking to you, Roberto Benigni) -- anyway a happy 50th birthday to the queen Olivia Colman! I only saw Tyrannosaur within the past couple of years, after I'd already fallen hard for Olivia with the rest of the world, but my god her work in this movie is devastating. Go watch it if you've never seen it -- she will smash your heart into a million itty bitties. What are your favorite Olivia performances these days? I also thought she was very funny, in a very different register from what we're used to, in Wonka

Mark Ruffalo Four Times

A couple of weeks ago I shared with you the first batch of these photos of Mark Ruffalo going Full Furry Hulk Daddy for Perfect magazine -- well here are some more and I would say that no, they do not disappoint. On a sidenote a congrats to mark for his Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for Poor Things! He's very very funny in the movie (here is my review) -- I saw somebody some time ago seriously making fun of his accent, apparently unaware that the accent is supposed to be ridiculous? You can't take morons anywhere. Anyway! Let's all ceberate Mark's achievment by ogling his belly fur after the jump...

Go On 'n Goon Out, Henry Cavill

As twas foretold by yesterday's post of Henry Cavill pictures, the trailer for Guy Ritchie's The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare starring Henry Cavill, Alex Pettyfer, Alan Ritchson, Eiza Gonzalez, and Henry Golding has indeed arrived this morning -- it feels like a Kingsman movie meets Inglourious Basterds (right down to the presence Til Schweiger) but I don't really mean that to dismiss it; I actually think it looks fun? Dumb but fun and if Guy Ritchie can perfect "dumb but fun" he'll be doing better than he normlaly does.

Ungentlemanly is out on April 19th.

Which is Hotter?

Glen Powell's cover for the Mexican edition of Men's Health (seen above left) is different from the U.S. cover and it immediately reminded me of Ryan Reynolds on the 2009 iussue of Entertainment Weekly... so why not face them off? It's Monday and I'm taking today easy to reaquaint myself with this nonsense after a week off, so let's do dumb stuff. Vote!

And if you missed Glen's entire Men's Health
photo-shoot you can see that hotness right here.

Swash Me Buckle, Henry Cavill

While we've already gawped at Henry Cavill's lotta-look on the set of Guy Ritchie's upcoming movie The Ministtry of Ungentlemanly Warfare it's good to have an update via the man himself -- Henry shared these two official photos of him in character on his Insta today, along with the info that a trailer will appear tommorow. I was surprised when I checked -- it's out on April 19th! That's not too far away now. This movie is a veritable who's-who of beefcakery, also starring Alan Ritchson, Alex Pettyfer, Henry Golding, Til Schweiger, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, plus Dunkirk twink Freddie Fox is apparently playing James Bond author Ian Fleming? I have no idea what nonsense to expect from this thing but biceps will be served.

My First Sundance 2024 Three

Okay, so Sundance! Maybe you noticed I was gone all last week? I was in sunny Utah, land of Mormon underwear and wretched anti-trans bills, for Robert Redford's little annual movie festival. Over the course of the fest -- including screeners I saw before I left, movies I saw while there, and movies I watched online once I got home -- I watched fifty-one movies total. That's a lot of movies! And so far I have reviewed... three? Yes, three. These things take time. I'm not a machine. More will be coming this week but first I need to link to the three reviews that've come already. So here those are.

First up I wrote down my thoughts on Steven Soderbergh's latest, the expirimental haunted house flick Presence -- read it right here. It stars Lucy Liu and Julia Fox (in the vaunted role of "haunted house real estate agent" ) among others, and Soderbergh's trick (he's always gotta have a trick) is the ghost is the camera. I had mixed feelings on it. So go read about them!

Next up another horror movie (no surprise there) but one I was much more excitable over (indeed I shared the poster for this one before I even left) -- a first-time feature from director Chris Nash called In a Violent Nature, which flips the script on the Slasher Movie by shooting the entire thing from the murderer's perspective. Read my review right here. This will be hitting Shudder sooner rather than later so stay tuned for more on it when that happens. But it's funny -- it wasn't until I was writing the second review that I realized both this and Presence both pull such a similar trick, showing us the story from the "villain"'s perspective. And yet I think the first-time filmmaker beat Soderbergh at the game? Anyway...

... moving on to the movie I was most looking forward to at the fest -- click here to read my thoughts on Love Lies Bleeding, the ass-kicking bodybuilder noir from Saint Maud director Rose Glass, starring Kristen Stewart and Katy O'Brien as lovers who get all entangled up in a hyper-violent crime-spree -- I shared the trailer a few weeks back and I am super happy to say that this one totally lived up to my expectations. I fuckin' loved it. As I start my review with you should be thinking "Bound meets Mandy."

Jonny On Orgasms & Brokeback Mountain

Ooh today is coming in hard and fast -- do you hear me, Jonathan Bailey, coming hard and fast! -- because no sooner had I posted that Oliver Jackson-Cohen photoshoot then did I see a new Jonathan Bailey photoshoot for Interview magazine! But even better -- Jonny is chatting with his Crashing co-star Phoebe Waller-Bridge and listening to the two is just like firecrackers popping off. Here's a choice bit where PWB asks him about if there were any gay romances he had on-screen to learn from:

"Unfortunately, there just weren’t that many were there growing up... but I met Matthew Rhys recently, who I just love. And I was thinking about that relationship in Brothers and Sisters. And then there was Queer as Folk. Russell, T. Davies changed the game. So many people owe so much to him just purely for visibility. There is no Tim and Hawk to a 2023 audience without Queer as Folk....

Speaking of history, I was doing media studies with an amazing teacher and I decided that I was going to do my dissertation about the representations of Hutus and Tutsis and the Rwanda genocide, looking at Hotel Rwanda and Shooting Dogs. And then Brokeback Mountain came out and I was like, “Hang on, how can I possibly create a world where I can go and have a free pass to go to the cinema to watch it 10 times?” I’m really proud of my 17-year-old self, I wasn’t necessarily out, but I changed the topic to representation of homosexuality in Brokeback Mountain and I watched that film 10 times. And this amazing teacher, Dr. Brunton, who probably had an idea of what was going on, was just like, “This is brilliant, keep going, keep going.” And I think it was the best mark I ever got."

There's also a lot of talk of eye-fucking strangers and orgasms and everything you want to hear Jonathan Bailey talk about so make sure you go read the entire thing. But first here I have the photos for you after the jump...

OIiver Jackson-Cohen Fourteen Times

This is a gift that trickled out slowly over the weekend -- as so many fine gifts do -- but I do believe we now have the complete "Oliver Jackson-Cohen for Numero magazine" photoshoot, just in time for me to be back at my desk and ready to post it. Good timing, Olly!

These are technically in support of his British motorcross action movie called Jackdaw which is out in UK theaters now, although in the interview they bring up the fact that he's also about to start filming the second season of Apple's series Surface soon -- and that's actually the first I'd heard that Surface got renewed, which makes me happy! I liked that show well enough and will be down for more.

Anyway this is a very hot photoshoot as the photos I've posted so far make clear, and we give our thanks to Oliver and the entire Numero team for it. And there's plenty more where those came from so hit the jump for it...

It's The Road House Poster

I flew home from Sundance last night (yes yes and my arms are real tired) but even still I wasn't planning on posting here until Monday, as the online portion of that festival begins today... and yet here we are. How could I not break into my break for that, the ab-tastic poster for Jake Gyllenhaal's Road House remake (via)? We're also being promised the trailer for the movie, directed by Doug Liman of Go fame, tomorrow -- so I'll probably make another exception about posting tomorrow. Stay tuned! Road House hits Prime (yeah they're being real dumb and skipping theaters) on March 21st. See all our previous coverage (with lots of Jake in states of undress even before this poster) right here. I hope my boyfriend is prepared for me to hang this poster above our bed!

ETA below is the trailer! Am I nuts or does it actually look fun and funny? I hope it works -- Doug Liman can be such a great director and obviously I want nothing but good (sexy) things for Mr. Gyllenhaal. And Billy Magnussen is playing an Evil Real Estate Developer! You can't fight that.

Gone Sundancin'

Alright kiddos that's it -- I'm off to the mountains of Utah for the next week to watch some movies and get a backrub from Robert Redford or whatever. My first Sundance in person, baby! Keep your eyes peeled to my social media for updates -- reviews will be popping on Pajiba but I'll doubtlessly be rambling verbally on Twitter and visually on Instagram as well. I'm theoretically back from the fest on Tuesday but I'm taking the rest of next week off to dive into the online portion of the fest so... not sure if I'll be posting here on MNPP any sooner than January 29th. Wish me luck! (And before anyone asks the gif above is of French actor Raphaël Personnaz in a 2016 movie called In the Forests of Siberia and you can see a lot more from this scene right here, you are welcome.)
