Sorry, Wrong Number in 150 Words or Less

.
Like I admitted yesterday on Twitter, I've gone a bit off the deep end for Barbara Stanwyck lately. It was The Lady Eve that did it - Preston Sturges' sparkling comedy rolling off her half-smirk set my heart afire. Oh I love her! I am so gay for her right now.

Ahem. Anyway Sorry, Wrong Number had its moments - that's a killer ending - and it was great fun seeing her play a irredeemably spoiled and annoying bitch, but it was seriously hampered by a script straight outta the radio-play from which it was adapted. One flashback after another to explain everything that was happening. Talky, talky, talky! Why no showy, showy, showy?

But it did introduce me to John Bromfield, who had a tiny part as a detective, and who I immediately ran to my computer to look up, leading me to find these pictures (he's on the right in all three) (via):

I love the internet.

--- Dragon Dave - The next movie from one-time me-favorite David Fincher is going to be a remake of the Swedish hit The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. I've been meaning to get out to see the original for a couple weeks now but haven't yet; I've heard alternately awesome and dismissive things about it. Some people have said it's ripe for a remake (and the lead is apparently an awesome part for a lady). I do not know. What I do know is my Fincher enthusiasm is a piddle-puddle of what it once was and that makes me sad.

--- Fishy Fish - MTV got some good quotes from Alex Aja about his Piranha 3D movie coming out in August. Choice bit that will make my boyfriend very excited:

"I understand why James Cameron in "Avatar" didn't want to make the 3-D gimmicky, and he was right. But we are making a piranha-attacking-spring-break movie, so we are going to go for the huge on-the-screen effects and fish attacking the audience."

Know your movie, Alex! Good job. This movie was close to my top five list that I wrote up yesterday for movies I'm excited about; I just need to see a trailer or something first. But Aja's a good film-maker and this material's ripe for some fun. He also talks about some of the fun scenes we can expect, and the supposedly insane amount of gore. Hooray!

--- FU3D - In the above linked interview with Aja he talks about why he thinks 3D conversion was the way for him to go with Piranha; well a lot of people who've already seen this weekend's Clash of the Titans in the same sort of converted 3D are up in arms about the process. We shall see. It stinks of charlatanism to me though, too.

--- Full Moon - Stacie Ponder went and made another delightful comic strip, this time for the 1976 moonbeastsploitation flick Track of the Moon Beast. Delight!

--- You Know What's Annoying? A giant countdown clock for V splashed over half the screen during Lost. That's what.

--- And finally, it's the poster for that movie I'm being forced to see, ugh. (via)

Has anyone been keeping up with the videos over at Joe Gordon-Levitt's site Hit Record? I knew about the site, I follow JGL on Twitter of course, but I haven't had the chance to watch any yet. But after seeing this one below I might have to start, seeing as how it allows one to imagine one's self caught between Joe and Channing Tatum (I like the way that thought fits).

If you don't know anything about Hit Record,
EW explains it nicely here.

Paul In Person

.
Dagnabit, this is awesome! Paul Verhoeven - one of the last remaining living directors that I am completely obsessed with that I haven't yet shared air-space with - is gonna be in person at IFC Center, my beloved film mecca, next Thursday. He's presenting Monty Python's Life of Brian. IFC says:

"Legendary director Paul Verhoeven (Basic Instinct, Starship Troopers, Black Book) will appear in person April 8 to discuss Monty Python's LIFE OF BRIAN as part of our ongoing "Movie Night" series. Verhoeven -- the subject of our popular recent midnight series "Base Instincts: Verhoeven in the U.S.A." -- will talk about LIFE OF BRIAN, his career, and Jesus in a special Q&A session. In 1985, Verhoeven became the only non-theologian admitted into Los Angeles's Jesus Seminar, a group of 77 eminent scholars in theology, philosophy, linguistics, and biblical history. Verhoeven is the author of the new book Jesus of Nazareth (Seven Stories Press), exploring his lifelong fascination with the facts and fictions surrounding the life of Jesus. Copies of Jesus of Nazareth will be available for purchase at our concession stand; there will be a book signing following the screening."

Next week is a total busy nightmare for me - I'm crawling outta my hermit-hole every single night except for Thursday, and I don't know if I can do this. It might kill me. But... but... this is SO awesome! Ugh! Now I know how that Sophie chick felt, only times like a billion.

Quote of the Day

.
In keeping with their reputation as a respectable news source for adults, FOX News issued this statement in response to LL Cool J's "Hell no" upon learning that the show he was set to appear on, called Real American Stories, was suddenly gonna be hosted by Sarah Palin (via Wonkette):

"Real American Stories” features uplifting tales about overcoming adversity and we believe Mr. Smith’s interview fit that criteria. However, as it appears that Mr. Smith does not want to be associated with a program that could serve as an inspiration to others, we are cutting his interview from the special and wish him the best with his fledgling acting career."

I really just wanted to use that picture. I love you, Deep Blue Sea! But still, hilarious. Stomp around in your little sandbox some more, FOX News!

There's A Gay Joke In Here Somewhere

.

I kid because I love, Matthew Bomer. Via here:

“I started acting professionally when I was 17. I quit the [high school football] team and did a production of A Streetcar Named Desire at the Alley Theatre in Houston. I used to drive down at the end of the school day, do the show, do my homework during intermission and drive an hour back to Spring to go to school the next day.” The footballers didn’t object. “I think they understood that this was what I wanted to do with my life,” he says. Of course, he goes on with a smile, “If I had been the All-State quarterback, they would have had some objections to my playing the young collector in Streetcar.”

.

BD has got an enormous gallery of new images from the Nightmare on Elm Street remake that's out on April 30th. Beware some of them are super spoilery and I wish I could un-see them myself. But if you don't care about that, there's a great deal of gushing gore to wade through, as well as the clearest vision of Jackie Earle Haley as Mr. Krueger that I've seen so far.
.

Best Worst Posters

Via AICN comes a pair of differently colorized versions of the poster for the delightfully delightful Troll 2 documentary Best Worst Movie, which starts rolling out across the country starting in Austin at the end of April.

I saw yesterday something I hadn't noticed - that the opening night at a lot of these screenings across the country will have the film-maker, Michael Paul Stephenson (he was the little boy in Troll 2) and the actor that played his father and is the star of Best Worst Movie, Dr. George "You can't piss on hospitality!" Hardy, there for your entertainment! I got to see the guys at the screening I saw last Summer of the movie and they are a freaking hoot. Not to be missed!
.

If It Were Anybody Else...

... besides Anna Faris that was announced to be starring in a remake of the seminal Goldie Hawn vehicle Private Benjamin, I'd either not care enough to even give it a thought - I haven't seen the original since I was a kid, and it was never something I was tremendously attached to - or I'd just be mildly annoyed at being reminded at how deeply Hollywood is imagination-deprived.

But it is Anna Faris.
And Anna Faris can do no wrong.
So count me the eff in.

I mean, at least we dodged the Kate Hudson bullet here.

Dave Franco Two Three Times

.

(via) You know, it wasn't until I was sitting in the theater and the opening credits to Greenberg were rolling and I saw Dave Franco's name therein that I realized that is was him being adorable in the trailer for the film I'd seen bunches of times.

His part's tiny but he is indeed adorable in it. Anyway I'm glad another Franco's come out to play; one was never gonna be enough, ya know? (previous Dave Franco love here)
.

5 Off My Head - Summer Lovin'

.
Just got my tickets for the Sam-in-a-skirt-riffic Clash of the Titans remake this weekend and it got me thinking, the Summer movie season's pretty much here, right? I mean it's moved up and up and up each year, working their damndest to rape our wallets but good with their spectacular spectaculars, so here it not, not even Easter yet, and the first big CG-fest of the Summer's upon us.

Anyway, Summer's here, whether the weather or the calendar wants to cooperate or not. So what's this mean movie-wise? What is there to watch? Well here are the 5 Summer movies, post-Titans, that I'm most looking forward to.

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World - Might as well get the obvious baby of the bunch outta the way first, right? I practically shot sperm out of my eyeballs all over its trailer last week. So excited. (out on August 13th)

Toy Story 3 - I'm a little worried about all the new characters they've been showing off these past few weeks; I hope they don't steal up too much of the characters-that-we-care-about's time. Although given Pixar's track-record they'll make us love these new characters in a jaunty five seconds just as much as we do any of the ol' gang. I'm also a little soured about all the praise heaped upon the unfit Up - which was half a good movie - but a return to Woody & Co. ought to erase any of that bad taste from my mouth right quick. (out on June 18th)

Predators - I thought Adrien Brody was an inspired choice on Day One and the footage we've seen so far's only underlined that opinion o' mine. Add in Robert Rodriguez producing and Nimrod Antal directing and I think they might actually make something right outta this, I do. It'd be nice after those AVP abominations. (out on July 9th)

Inception - I've been purposefully quiet on this one. I've avoided almost everything there's been to read and see so far... thankfully there hasn't been much to read or see, because I am weak. I did see that amazing world-folding trailer, and I do believe in Chris Nolan's ability to break my fucking brain. (out on July 16th)

Centurion - Neil Marshall and Michael Fassbender? Epic violence, kick-ass ladies, and... shirtless Michael Fassbender? Yes, please... actually fuck the "please" - just GIMME. (out on August 6th)

Oh sure there are plenty of other movies I'm curious and/or enthusiastic about. I want to see Kick Ass solely because of the great word-of-mouth that's been following it from screenings; to be honest its trailers have made me actually want to see it less. Alternately, RDJ be damned the trailer for Iron Man 2 actually kinda made me want to see the movie. And I really didn't like the first one very much. I want to see Jonah Hex because hello Evil Michael Fassbender (also my weird like of Megan Fox). The Nightmare on Elm Street remake out at the end of April is the one I'm most hopeful they don't fuck up, but I'm holding my breath on that one, not allowing myself the slightest whiff of enthusiasm until I see it for myself. Platinum Dunes has done me too wrong before. But Jackie Earle Haley, man... and then there's Prince of Persia. Oh please please don't be bad, Prince of Persia.

Somebody Make A Movie Out Of This

.
It's got everything! Murder! Mayhem! Mistaken Identities! Arguably the most famous movie scene in history! Robert Graysmith, the man who wrote Zodiac, released a book last month called The Girl in Alfred Hitchcock's Shower that tells the tale of Marli Renfo, a stripper who was Janet Leigh's body double in the infamous shower scene in Psycho, who would become hunted by a Hitchcock-obsessed maniac twenty-plus years later.

You can read an overview of the story over here, and here's a link to the book at Amazon. Must read this! I'd never heard about this story before. This would be a fascinating way to make a movie out of the making of Psycho, though.

The Suitors Come Marching In

.

The roles of Anna Faris' previous hump-buddies are being filled in in her next movie What's Your Number?, and I'm definitely being reminded of the casting that happened back in the day for When In Rome with Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel... anybody else? I still haven't seen that film, but it's not really a positive association at this point... anyway, via EW:

"Anna Faris’ R-rated comedy What’s Your Number? is assembling quite a supporting cast to play her slew of ex-boyfriends. Saturday Night Live’s Andy Samberg is attached and an offer is out to Star Trek’s Zachary Quinto to play two of the men she revisits in her quest to find love. The New Regency film is based on Karyn Bosnak’s book 20 Times a Lady and tracks Faris’ character Delilah, who upon sleeping with her 20th guy realizes that it’s too many and she must have missed her Mr. Right along the way. Chris Evans is already attached to play her womanizing next door neighbor.

New Regency is producing and filming is scheduled to begin in May, plenty of time for Evan to shoot before going off to be Captain America. Mark Mylod (Entourage) will helm."

A little Andy Samberg goes a reeeeally long way for me, so that's not exactly hitting my happy spot. Quinto's cool.

But the big news here is, I think, that they're telling us that Chris Evans is definitely still in the film. Most of us had assumed that Matthew Bomer was taking Evans' role... so I wonder what that leaves for Matty. The gay best friend, perhaps?
