--- Pretty & Peculiar - You probably already watched this but here's the first trailer for Tim Burton's Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children, which stars Eva Green and Eva Green and EVA GREEN. Okay okay there are other people, awesome people, like Asa Butterfield, Chris O’Dowd, Allison Janney, Terence Stamp, Judi Dench and Samuel L. Jackson, in this movie. Plus that monster thing at the end of the trailer is surprisingly twisted looking for what is generally supposed to be a kid's movie, and bless Tim Burton for it. But let's not pretend we're sold on this on the merits of anything other than Eva Eva Eva for Eva.
--- After Birth - Beautiful and talented Nate Parker (emphasis on beautiful) is grabbing his Sundance success with Birth of a Nation by the balls and leap-frogging on to a new project already, even though Nation won't be out until this Fall - he's working on writing an adaptation of the memoir Carry On (out in August)
about the friendship between two disabled wrestlers. There's a blind
one and there's one with no legs, and the blind one literally carries
the no-legged one to matches. This is a true story! The book is told
from the point of view of an ESPN reporter who did a doc on the duo for
the channel. Anyway Nate was a wrestler himself, as you can see in that picture, which I have stared at for several minutes now.

--- Lobster Brisk - Good news, Good Movie Lovers: after a bit of a delay, Yorgos Lanthimos' brilliant film The Lobster has another US release date; it will be out on May 13th! So not too much longer, thank goodness. Here's my review from when it screened at the New York Film Festival in the fall, and you can watch the trailer over here. I've seen the movie three times now and it gets better every damned time. We are in love.

--- Holy Man - A couple of news-bits on the
upcoming TV series Preacher, starring Dominic Cooper -- that there is
the new Coopy poster for the show (via). Plus the premiere date for the series got moved way up -- it will start airing on
May 22nd! That is exciting. And I guess they showed the first episode
at SXSW and people dug it; for a spoilery but very funny bit click here. Oh and a couple of new character pictures were dropped. (thanks Mac)

--- Atone For Your Sins - Last night The Film Experience did Jo Wright's film Atonement for the "Hit Me With Your Best" Shot" series and I kind of wish I'd made plans for myself to participate after skimming through everybody's entries. I did not like the movie much at all when I saw it in 2007, but in the wake of Hanna (Wright's follow-up, which I adored) I kind of feel like giving Atonement another chance. Time has softened my thoughts so I'm curious to see if I'd look at the film differently now. Plus, you know, there's James McAvoy thrusting against bookshelves.

--- Man On Deck - Christopher Nolan is going to shoot his next movie, a Naval thriller called Dunkirk,
using a real battleship that he's bringing "back to functionality" just
for the shoot. He certainly thinks big. Speaking of, he wants Tom Hardy
and Kenneth Branagh and Mark Rylance to all co-star in the movie, along
with a couple of newcomers. Oh and possibly Harry Styles, somehow. I
haven't really liked any of Nolan's films in awhile, as you know, but
Tom Hardy sells me on any crap, as you also know.

---And Finally Nash Edgerton, brother of Joel and director of the terrific 2008 flick The Square, is working on his next film and it's got quite a cast - Charlize Theron, David Oyelowo, Amanda Seyfried, Thandie Newton and of course Joel Edgerton, will all star in the untitled film (which was momentarily titled American Express), and which is described as a "dark kidnap comedy-drama." Anyway I loved The Square and Thandie excepted (god she bugs me) I love all that cast. Sign me up!

Ugh. So tired of stories "told from the point of view of [insert outsider to the story]." It's lazy and cheap and means that the writer doesn't have to dig very deep into the actual main characters. It's keeps us at a distance and tries to make us care about this "outsider" who's incidental to the amazing people he's observing.
Anon -- well that's how the book is written, and the book is a memoir of the reporter herself, so I think it makes sense there. The script for the movie might not take that POV, we don't know yet. But I agree with what you say! The "white person audience surrogate" thing is wayyyyyyyy played out. If you can't see through people that don't look like you at this point the rest of us need to stop caring about you.
