Last week I posted some photos of the actor Luke MacFarlane as my mea culpa for not liking his and Billy Eichner's gay rom-com Bros -- I mean I would have posted those photos of Luke even if I had liked the movie because Luke is hot. But it felt good in my heart to extend that olive branch. Anyway I'm over that performative BS now...
... I'm just posting this new photo-shoot of Luke because he is hot. I actually finally saw BROS tonight and am glad I took advantage of the discounted Tuesday benefit that Regal and AMC offer because it wouldn't have been worth LA cinema adult prices - the movie was technically very proficiently made, but my main problem with it was way too much Billy Eichner; even when his character and Luke's character spent time with others, except for the bit with Luke's family and the joint holiday party (where it was a mix of both their friends - but really no one who could be termed Aaron's friend circle or even acquaintance circle got speaking roles or anything to actually do, save for his childhood friend). It reminded me of a complaint I often made when I went to see independent movies, which were often written by and then directed by the same person (and sometimes starred them). If Eichner really wanted to star in this, someone else should have done the heavy lifting with the script, or someone else should have been cast as Aaron (Chris Evan's brother, for example, would actually have been more plausible, Luke McFarlane is just far too hot), and not that Scott Evans' is not attractive, he is. Any other openly gay actors would likely have paired better, but simply having this as a star vehicle for Eichner was the main problem.
And as someone who was both in Act Up and Queer Nation and was a Frameline and Outfest member since the New Queer Cinema days, yadda yadda, the movie was far too preachy and too histrionic in parts for a mainstream comedy. The Hallhark movies could have been a bit longer, or their idea of their Oscar Bait cowboy movie, or even the Night at the Museum or the (likely expensive to create/film) theme park ride for the museum would have been funnier bits that could have replaced, for example, the entire podcast intro.
It also wasn't believable that Eichner's podcast would have a million subscribers, or that actual people would recognize someone who couldn't even successfully sell a children books when Fran Drescher and Jim Carey can.
