All Hail King Franz

Finally one of the new year's best movies to be is out -- Sebastian Meise's Great Freedom, starring the incomparable Franz Rogowski as a Holocaust survivor who gets imprisoned straight out of Auschwitz for being gay, is now playing at Film Forum here in NYC, and this afternoon I have reviewed it for Pajiba right here. I know, I know, it's one theater. But it hits L.A. next week and then rolls out across the country from there, and since Mubi is distributing it I wouldn't be surprised if it hits their streaming service in the next couple of months at most. So if you're not in New York just have a little more patience. It's very much worth it. I don't know if I'll see a male performance this year that I love more than Rogowski's work in this film, which is simultaneously sweet and devastating but so internalized and wildly unshowy. Gah he's so great!
