Well, what a spectacular start to a big week! If everything goes this well for the next seven days I'll be a very happy boy. Last night reader Dan (thank you again, Dan!) forwarded me a link to the end of a rainbow I've been chasing for years -- Victor Fleming's 1929 silent film The Wolf Song starring Gary Cooper, Lupe Velez, and most importantly Gary Cooper's river-side nude bathing scene, has finally made its way online! Uploaded last week on RareFilmm to mark the occasion of the 120th anniversary of Coop's birth (which I also mentioned here but with far less reason to dance in the streets) this film has been impossible, literally impossible, to find -- believe me I have scoured every nook and cranny of the internet.

Dan beat me to letting you know. I stumbled across this over the weekend but since you close up shop over the weekend I had intended to drop a note here today. Of course I had to drop everything and give it a look to see if Gary indeed graced us with the full monty. No such luck, if the legend is true that part of the scene was probably jettisoned by censors somewhere down the line and lost, but he is obviously nude throughout the scene and shows more than I ever expected to see of Gary Cooper!
As for the film, it's no lost masterpiece but an enjoyable enough flick with both Gary and Lupe at peak beauty. They embarked on a heated, volatile two year affair while filming and their hot pants for each other does come across in the picture.

I've looked for this for years, also. I've read that he did full frontal nudity during the bathing scene, but looking at the clips now, I doubt that was true. As being hung, there's a reason he was called "the Montana Mule."
Great clips, thanks! Why would anyone actually believe that there would be "full frontal nudity" in a Paramount release from 1929? In those days, you might occasionally get a glimpse of butt or a topless woman but never anything approaching "full frontal."
