Everything You Ever Need To Know About Life...

... you can learn from:

After Hours (1985)

Marcy: My husband was a movie freak. Actually, he was particularly obsessed with one movie, The Wizard of Oz. He talked about it constantly. I thought it was cute at first. On our wedding night, I was a virgin. When we made love - you've seen the movie, haven't you?
Paul: The Wizard of Oz? Yeah.
Marcy: Well, whenever he - you know, when he came...
Paul: Yeah.
Marcy: ...he would scream out, "Surrender Dorothy!"
That's all! Just "Surrender Dorothy!"
Paul: Wow.
Marcy: Instead of saying something normal like, "Oh, God," or something normal like that. I mean, it was pretty creepy! And I told him I thought so, but he just, he just couldn't stop, he just, he just couldn't stop, he just... couldn't stop.

Any list of Martin Scorsese's greatest films is incomplete with this underrated black comedy, which was released in New York (the center of the universe, ya know... specifically the center of the universe is some SoHo lofts that any sane anybody today would murder, literally murder, to own) thirty years ago this weekend. (It was released across the country four weeks later.) You should give it a watch or a re-watch if you haven't lately - I re-watched it just a few weeks ago and it's such a wacked outlier in Marty's filmography, while remaining entirely his... it's really something. Oh and Griffin Dunne is adorable, I don't care what anybody else says!
