Tom at the Farm in Venice

.
Back in March when I saw the the Quebecois hipster savant Xavier Dolan speak at MoMA with his latest movie Laurence Anyways he spoke a little bit about his new movie, which he'd already finished filming and was in the process of editing, called Tom at the Farm. He mentioned that this would be the first time a movie of his would not be premiering at the Cannes Film Fest, just because of timing issues, and now comes word that it will indeed be showing for the first time at Venice this Fall.

If the (terrific striking) poster up top didn't clue you in Tom at the Farm is supposed to be a psychological thriller, so a departure from Dolan's usual intimate character-centric drama then. Oh I'm sure "character" will still be plenty important - thrillers just depend on some more drive plot-wise, is all. The movie is about a man who goes to the country to visit the family of his recently deceased boyfriend - I do believe the boyfriend was closeted to his family, so you can see where the thriller elements could take off from there. I can't wait to see it - I like all of Dolan's films to varying degrees but I haven't totally and completely fallen for one yet; a psychological thriller is tickling towards my sweet spot though.

And still no word what his next project will be - when I saw him at MoMA he was keen on making a movie about Hollywood in English starring Taylor Kitsch, but all of that was just wishful talking, he didn't actually have any of it set to go or anything. Like I said at the time it would be really smart of Kitsch to work with someone like Dolan though, at this point in his career where things are kinda flailing, so we should let him know about Dolan's interest every chance we get. Not to mention that Xavier will exploit Taylor appropriately, I have no doubts about that.
