The Moment I Fell For... Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Okay it might not be precisely this exact moment in Mysterious Skin that did it, but wouldn't you rather look at that over some simple shot of him looking sad? I thought so. And anyway I don't know if there's a single moment I can point to in MS that was my "Eureka!" with regards to him - it's pretty much the whole thing, from start to finish, that did it.

I grew up familiar with Joe's face from seeing him pop up on Roseanne and Quantum Leap and that 90s stab at a Dark Shadows reboot - remember that, anyone? - and while I wasn't much of a Third Rock watcher I did know him as the kid from that. It seemed a bizarre fit at first - I loved Scott Heim's Mysterious Skin as a book even before the film came out so I had preconceived notions about the character of Neil, and he wasn't so much what I'd pictured. Little did I know! Little did we all know.

Oh and the few thoughts I wrote up on Mysterious Skin back in 2005 actually comprised the very first "review" I ever did here at MNPP! Ah, memories. I can remember that woman standing up and screaming and running out of the theater like it was yesterday.

Great movie - Joe was awesome in it. I was also a fan of the fantastic soundtrack by Harold Budd and Robin Guthrie!

I thought, when I saw that title, it would be the moment he got an ice hockey blade to the face in Halloween H20. I should've known...

I haven't seen H20 since it came out and I couldn't remember him in it at all. I should probably rewatch that.

Yes, I recall H20 as being the moment when I thought, "wow, he has grown up and is more than a little cute!"...and more than a little dead soon thereafter...
