Good Morning, World

.

And a happy 34th birthday to Tom Hardy today. Have any of y'all seen Warrior since it opened this past weekend? I'm curious to see what people have thought of it since a rah-rah sports movie, very old-fashioned, isn't entirely my cuppa... but I did think Hardy and Edgerton were very very good in it. (Here's my review.)

I saw Drive my second time last night (more on that later) and Nicolas Winding Refn was there at the screening to do a Q&A (more on that later) and afterward I got to thinking about Hardy, due to the mammoth star-making performance Refn got out of him in Bronson. Basically I hope, once he's done roiding out as Bane in The Dark Knight Returns that he'll let his body calm down a little bit, don't y'all? It's nice that he's cornered the market on hulking maniacs but if he can even manage it at this point I'd like to see him try something smaller... I guess Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy out in a couple of months won't rely on the bulging of his deltoids so much. I have no idea what a deltoid is, by the way. It's a thing, right?

I think a deltoid is a small stream and swampy place at the end of a river--like the Mississippi below N'Orleans.

Warrior is incredibly clichéd, but it's also a great movie. There's something thrilling about a classic story told with passion and integrity and talent. I was so involved in the film as it played out and so moved. The three central actors probably deserve much of the praise for this. I can't decided who I thought gave the best performance, but it doesn't even matter, really. They were all tremendous, creating characters that seem authentic, even though they're written in a fairly by-the-numbers way. How often can a movie position two characters against each other and have you fiercely rooting for both of them? Not many. There's a raw power and excitement to the film. The fight sequences were riveting, of course, but I was equally happy to see the more personal and quiet scenes. The film didn't create throwaway villains and many times when I thought the film would go somewhere cheesy, it didn't. I was just so surprised at how much I enjoyed this movie and how much I felt it transcended mere passable entertainment to be something special.

Tom is boring to me now. He's backtracking big time about his sexual past. What a phoney.
