SVG got it, it's PS aka Purple Noon, aka the original filmed version of Patricia Highsmiths' Talented Mr. Ripley so shaun you were on the right track.

I ran all the way in the way to MoMA to see this yesterday and it was SOLD OUT. Sadness. Oh to see Alain Delon on a big screen.
