Miike Takes New York

.
I am slowly but surely crossing off the names on my wish list of directors that I want nay need to see in person. I've seen Werner Herzog, I've seen Michael Haneke (twice!), I've seen Park Chan-wook, I've seen Spike Jonze and David O. Russell and David Gordon Green and Richard Kelly and Eli Roth and Edgar Wright and Todd Solondz, and on and on and on. And here comes Takashi Miike!

On the eve of the U.S. release of 13 Assassins — his large-scale, old-fashioned, all-star samurai action epic — the Film Society and Subway Cinema (curators of the New York Asian Film Festival, which returns to the Walter Reade this July) are proud to present this first-ever, in-person New York retrospective devoted to the genre-hopping master of cinema. Featuring an onslaught of his best films, many of which have never screened before in New York City, it features everything from his major hits to legendary rarities like his criminally under-screened Fudoh. The time has come to remind audiences that Takashi Miike is more than just blood-and-guts, he’s also one of the most exciting and talented modern filmmakers working today.

Tickets are on sale now - he'll be at the screening of Audition on March 16th, and there's some kind of reception after the screening of 13 Assassins on the 17th.
