Apologies for my head being firmly wedged into my bum, blind to the world - what other explanation can there be for it taking me so long to mention this story:"With the Oscars over, two of this year's up-and-coming nominees are being considered for the hottest female role available at the moment: the lead in "Hunger Games."
Sources tell Variety that 2010 Academy Award nominees Jennifer Lawrence and Hailee Steinfeld -- as well as Abigail Breslin, nominated for "Little Miss Sunshine" -- are all vying for the Liongate tentpole, due next March 23.
While no offer has been made, insiders say that Lawrence has generated the most interest."
Jennifer Lawrence is too old and too blond and too, uh, developed. But she was terrific in Winter's Bone and proved herself a total charmer over the course of the awards season so I can't entirely knock the choice. Steinfeld's probably the closest age-wise and looks-wise, and was very good in True Grit. And I love me some Abby Breslin but I haven't seen her in anything since Zomebieland and in teen girl years that's a lifetime so I had to look her up - look at her now! I think I want her out of these three. Abby Abby Abby! What do you guys think?

Although seriously, I'd be okay with any of these three.
I'm actually really fine with any of these three too, which surprises me. I figured someone awful (whatsherface) would turn out to be the front-runner. That said none of these three have got me doing flips of ecstasy either. But there's nobody I can think of that does.
Hailee! I've never read one of these books, but I'll see it if they cast her.
The age thing is SO being overblown. Jennifer Lawrence is the best for this by about seven miles. If I see Hailee Steinfeld stomping around her lil'-kid boots as Katniss, I'm gonna be bummed. And Breslin's not hard enough.

Honestly, I think Jennifer Lawrence could pull it off, but my money is on someone less well known ... the Skins girl, for example. Still pulling for Hailee.
I agree - Jennifer Lawrence is the better choice.
Jennifer can dye her hair brown, and she kind of has grey eyes like Katniss. I think she'd be great in the role, and actually believe it should be someone a little older than Hailee or Abigail.

ugh. I gave myself a headache just by writing that. But i'm so interested in how all this turns out. Personally, my vote would be Skins UK's Kaya Scoledario. She pretty much has the look and the acting ability. But she's not really that well known, plus, she's a Brit, so that might work against her.
I'm way more interested in the other characters though. I'd be super-happy to see Cate Blanchett as Coin if they make the whole trilogy.
I thought that not only was Hailee nominated in the wrong category, but she should have been recognized with an actual award. She was amazing in "True Grit" and would be brilliant as Katniss.
