"Bad luck isn't brought by broken mirrors..."

.
"... but by broken minds!!!"

Even though I was originally mortified at the idea of a remake of Dario Argento's Suspiria, I eventually found myself coming around to the idea. The majority of that coming around was due to the director who swooped in as the possible helmer, David Gordon Green. I'm a big fan of all of Green's work and it just seemed so dang curious, the thought of him doing the film, that I couldn't help myself. I started to really want to see the movie he would make out of it.

The actress that was supposed to take the lead in his version of Suspiria was Natalie Portman, at least according to rumors. I tend to be pro-Portman for the most part, and she's perfect casting for Suzy Bannion, the in-over-her-head dancer played in the original film by Jessica Harper.

Well Green's Suspiria just sorta sat there on the back-burner for awhile, and there it remains. Every time he announces a new project I see a mention that he probably still intends to do it, but... not yet. Not yet. And here I went from hating the idea to being impatient about it! But for now he's off making a stoner fairy-tale called Your Highness with James Franco, Danny McBride, and... yup, Natalie Portman.

So Natalie's getting her DGG on with that film and now, according to The Hollywood Reporter today she's found the role where she can play a ballerina too, and I worry she's filled all the needs she had in wanting to do the Suspiria remake and will move on. Says THR:

"Darren Aronofsky's "Black Swan" could soon be taking flight.

After being set up in early 2007 at Universal, the project -- a supernatural thriller set in the world of New York City ballet -- has been reconstituted after being put into turnaround by the studio. It has been making the rounds to studios and specialty divisions, several of which are keenly interested.

Among the elements giving it a boost: Natalie Portman is attached to play the lead.

... "Swan" centers on a veteran ballerina (Portman) who finds herself locked in a competitive situation with a rival dancer, with the stakes and twists increasing as the dancers approach a big performance. But it's unclear whether the rival is a supernatural apparition or if the protagonist is simply having delusions.

Those who've read the script say it's a spine-tingler with elements of "The Others," the Nicole Kidman breakout in which viewers are left to discern what's real and what's imagined.

If a sale happens imminently, "Swan" could begin shooting as early as this year. Aronofsky has not committed to a movie that's ready to go, though he has been developing the "Robocop" reboot at MGM."

Alright, okay, so working with Darren Aronofsky is something a girl don't pass up, and this story sounds right up my alley even besides Aronofsky's attachment, so I'm there too. But I'm sad Suspiria's just sitting there forlornly on a shelf, maggots in its hair. I wanted to see what would happen there suddenly, surprising myself, and I don't surprise myself very often. Unless I look in a mirror. Eek.

ooh Black Swan sounds gooood.

I thought the actress from Susperia looks exactly like Zooey Deschanel though.

I have to say, I really love horror movies that do this.
