5 Off The Top Of My Head - Fringe's Benefits

.
Anybody catch the premiere of Fringe last night? I'd totally spaced on it, but thanks be to Tivo for remembering. I liked it well enough, and will certainly be giving it another shot. It wasn't up to par with Alias or Lost's respective pilot episodes, but it's got enough dangling threads of interest to bring me back. Here are five thoughts I had whilst watching the show (a little bit spoilery so beware).

1 - Lead Chick and Pacey are the weak links. Not that they're horrible, they're just sort of bland and I feel like I've seen what they're doing a billion times before. Hopefully that's something that'll be alleviated as we find out more about them and as long as Lead Chick isn't forced to make more speeches that come off like first drafts from an "Ashley Judd is a provocatively drunk police officer on the trail of a serial killing madman" movie.

2 - John Noble is rocking my fucking face off.

3 - Those dissonant strings that build up before each commercial break have GOT TO GO. They belong to Lost, and every time they appeared I expected Juliet to come flying into the frame on the hump of a polar bear. Although, admittedly, that might've been neat. Future cross-over stunt!

4 - Oh my God, did Blair Brown just rip off her skin like an opera glove and reveal a robot arm underneath? She is gonna OWN.

Also, she is proving a theory I've been working out lately true - she looks great and she looks her age, meaning whatever work she's had done (and she's probably had a little) has been kept to a minimum. Meaning she can play an older woman and not look like a Kabuki mask (see: Faye Dunaway). I think we'll see a lot of actresses like her who have been forgotten pop up in older age because, unlike their more successful counterparts who've stayed in the public eye and kept surgically enhancing themselves because of it until they don't look human anymore (see: Nicole Kidman), these actresses that've been out of the spotlight can take roles that call for an older woman and look realistic and not like a freak. Make sense?

5 - Speaking of, I was really hoping that we'd get to see some of the crazy shit from Altered States when Lead Chick got in the submersion tank. Especially my dear friend -

He'd better show up for sweeps.

If the jaw melting off the co-pilot's face didn't already have me, "Let's go make some LSD!" would have. I'm in.

I really liked it. I agree that the lead chick was pretty lame, I think part of the reason for that was cheesy dialogue. I was kind of confused by the ending, but I guess that was the point. Is Jack from "Days of Our Lives" a bad guy? Or is he really a good guy who just knows something we don't? (I say "is" because it looks like he might be back.)

Ja, I LOVED it.
My friend's a freelance journo over here in the UK so he managed to get his grubby little mitts on a copy a few months ago. I don't know if the cut I watched is the same as the pilot that FOX aired but reading initial reviews it sounds like nothing was cut or altered.
Here's my thoughts, not that you asked for them but what the hey:
I'm not too crazy for the lead lady either - she's no Jennifer Garner.
Blair Brown stole the show and I thought it fitting that the last line of the episode belonged to her. When she said it a shiver went down my spine reminiscent of the moment creepy Sudoko (or whatever the hissy hell she was called) crawled through the TV screen in the original Ring.
I don't care much for Pacey's dad. Or his stupid cow.
Joshua Jackson's casting seems a little odd - apparently he got it after auditioning for Star Trek. Still, he's cute so I won't complain.
I loved the the twist when the mole was revealed - I did not see that coming at all. The car chase that followed was pretty impressive as well.
Did you not think the acid sequence was a little cheesy? It was a little Lawnmower Man for my liking.
Other than that it didn't really disappoint. I can't wait for Charlotte Rampling to show up. She's incredible. What were the ratings like?
