Strap Your Winter Soldier On

The first episode of Marvel's second MCU series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is now available on Disney+ for your eyeballs, including this very brief glimpse of Sebastian Stan just the way we like him (that would be "out of costume") -- I saw the first episode a few days ago and it's fine! Like I said awhile back I don't envy anything having to follow-up the wonderful weirdness of WandaVision, especially a show so Standard Marvel-y as this, but there's some good action and the Falcon's character especially is going to benefit from some depth. We'll see what happens! Unlike the mess at DC (I sort of live-tweeted the Snyder Cut last night if you missed it, see below) at least Marvel, for all their highs and lows, seems to remember why comics resonate in the first place and don't non-stop revel in aggressive ugliness...

I don’t know what a winter time solider is and I don’t want to. So glad I gave up on comic book movies.

There hasn't been anything surprising so far about the series except how poignant its character-based scenes have been. I'm enjoying the performances of Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan when, up to this point, I've honestly been more invested in their joint press tour interviews than in anything they've done as their MCU characters.

So for the present, I've set aside my preemptive bitterness about the fact that Disney is too cowardly to ever let Sam and Bucky declare their love for each other, and settled in for what I hope will be both a pleasant and a moving ride. (I am, of course, anticipating that the fan fiction will be better, because it always is.)

Also, that introductory shot of Sebastian Stan waking up clad in nothing but sweat and a blanket did help to win me over, not gonna lie. 👍

I just have to ask... you thought Wandavision was wonderfully weird? I thought it was a mediocre, disappointing mess!
