Pleased To Meet You, Martin Eden

.
Well this has been a big day for news of NYFF 2019 movies -- earlier I gave you the release date for Brazil's masterful movie Bacurau and now comes word of Italian director Pietro Marcello's old-fashioned epic Martin Eden, based on the book by Jack London and featuring a truly star-making performance in the lead by Luca Marinelli, who won Best Actor in Venice last year and for good reason.

The movie, which has Marinelli losing himself in thought and politics at the expense of some kindness, feels in some ways like a classic that fell right on us out of the past -- it's challenging and intellectual and sweeping and at the same time intimate and gorgeous and... kinda cruel? It's kind of all the things! All of them. Anyway you can see for yourself in a couple of months because the movie's being released on April 17th, and here's the first trailer:

PS if you want to see more of Marinelli (and you do)
I recommend you click on this post I did
around the time I saw this movie at NYFF.
