Time For Flies

William Golding's 1954 book Lord of the Flies isn't anything I've given thought to in probably twenty years -- I remember reading it in, what, when do kids read that -- junior high? Would they have let younger kids like in elementary school read that? I remember we also watched the 1990 film in class after reading it -- man those were the best school days. Anyway the only memory I have is of the whole "Piggy" thing but only because that became a favorite taunt of bullies far and wide after we were exposed to it. Literature! Making kids more imaginative with their meanness for millennia. 

To get to my point (finally) news has just broken that Call Me By Your Name director Luca Guadgnino is in talks with Warner Brothers to make a new film version of the book, which tells the story of a bunch of young boys who get stranded on a desert island and go full on savage. I've only ever seen that 1990 version with Balthazar Getty, but it was also turned into a movie in 1963. Luca's an interesting choice, though. It'll give him a chance to indulge both his love for Nature and his more recent tendency towards melodrama and horror. Deadline says Luca's take will have "a contemporary spin" which means, what, it will be set in the present? It will all turn out to be inside of a video-game as the background dissolves into pixels?
