Surreal Pink Pups Score Soccer Cinema Slam

.
Gay Pride this year will be ushered into the great city of New York on the backs of a bunch of gigantic fluffy puppies galloping through cotton candy clouds... so the usual, basically. Specifically I speak of the deeply strange and silly new Portuguese film Diamantino, a bit of sexy soccer psychedelia which played Cannes last year and then NYFF last fall and is finally hitting real screens starting May 24th. I saw it at NYFF and it is... out there, man.

It stars a note perfect Carloto Cotta as a dim-as-dirt football player (he couldn't be more Cristiano Ronaldo if he stuffed his trunks and then sold them to the highest bidder) whose life collapses around him in a series of increasingly insane adventures involving genetic engineering and slutty nuns.

The film opens at Metrograph this Friday -- one half of its directing team will be there all weekend for Q&As -- and then BAM next week, and a bunch of cities from there will be under its pink spell over the course of the rest of the summer. Very curious to hear what y'all think of this one...
