This week marked the 20th anniversary of Wes Craven's New Nightmare, so hit the jump and let us dissect (aww poor Julie) what's probably its harshest scene...

Wes Craven's New Nightmare (1994)

Wes Craven's intent with New Nightmare was to make Freddy Krueger scary again, and he sure as heck-fire went for it. Besides the less kitschy make-up and costuming, there's a meanness to New Nightmare, a cruelty, that the previous sequels had veered away from. And if anybody knows cruelty it's the dude who made Last House on the Left. It's something that Craven's able to inject a little bit of that feeling, that dirty "this isn't only here for our entertainment" feeling, into a gigantic mainstream franchise sequel like this, isn't it?

Freddy needed it. A couple of things make this scene really work, or at least stick out to me. One, it's the choice to keep Dylan in the frame in nearly every shot - I'm not sure how they shot it, how much the actor Miko Hughes was on set for, but they really make you feel that this eight year old boy is in the room with this horrific violence. Shit ain't right. When she reaches out for his help, good grief.

And note how she actually dies in the scene, which I've zoomed in on there - all Freddy does is tap her gently on the forehead.  That's scarier than any room-spinning surrealism or gallons of Karo syrup can muster. Just a gentle tap, poof gone.

Another nice tweak is Freddy's anti-pun - if this movie had been made a couple years earlier and had just been one of the usual sequels Freddy would've made a Lionel Richie joke about "Dancing on the Ceiling" or some equally lame slash at funny. But no, he says "Ever play 'Skin the Cat'?" which is so entirely foul on so many levels (do note the rapey nature of a few of the shots, where Freddy's knife-fingers are always one slice away from performing an impromptu circumcision) that it makes your stomach turn. You are not being funny, Freddy Krueger! How dare you!
