May The Fourth Be With Jessica Lange

.
Wanna know what American Horror Story's 4th Season is going to be about? It's not everything yet but here's what Ryan Murphy says:

"It’s set in 1950. If you look historically what happened in the year 1950, there’s some more clues in that year. It’s a period piece. We try and do the opposite of what we’ve done before. Jessica Lange has already started practicing her German accent so I’m very excited!"

Scanning through the Wiki page for 1950 the first thing that struck me was Joseph McCarthy. I'm guessing it's some "Red Scare" stuff - I'd love it if the show went full ape-shit politically, actually. It hasn't done that so much yet. There's also all the "Atomic Age" stuff - there are all kinds of sci-fi horror movies from the period that they could riff on. Yeah they did some alien stuff already in the second season but there's plenty more to play with. Maybe Invasion of the Body Snatchers? I'd love it if they did giant mutant monsters a la Them, how funny would that shit be? Jessica Lange wrestling with an enormous tarantula, dare to dream. I'm just throwing out ideas here though - what do y'all think? ETA Ryan Murphy apparently also said "Jessica Lange has always wanted to play a Marlene Dietrich figure, and now she gets to."

Didn't Murphy suggest that he was looking at New Orleans and Santa Fe as potential locales for the next round? If so, 1950 makes sense for Santa Fe, especially with the Alger Hiss and Rosenberg stuff. Plus then he could loop all the crazyass Hispanic and Native supernatural stories. Llorona! Chupacabra! Tumbleweed witches! So, yeah, redbaiting and nukes and radiation poisoning and cowboy ghost stories... Jessica can play a Nazi chanteuse undercover/reinventing herself as a mysterious modernist artist in a headscarf who paints cowskulls and blossoms in the NM desert.
