Chinatown (1974)

The one thing I can't get across here that's vital is the sound, the horrible sound, the wailing, the horn, the crescendo of awfulness as the group of men gets closer and closer upon this horror. But I do love the way the camera itself is in shock - the way it holds back, everything stops for a moment, and then thump thump thump we're there and awfulness awfulness. And nothing worse than this:

Is that not one of the scariest shots in all of cinema? Everything Evelyn did to get her sister her daughter free and there she goes, yoinked away in the arms of the monster that made it all happen in the first place. They tell us to forget it, it's Chinatown, but we will never forget this. It will haunt us forever - like a bullet through the eye socket we're ripped right open.

Hey did ya hear that Chinatown's screenwriter Robert Towne will be working on the last season of Mad Men? Hmm... my sister, my daughter, my sister, my daughter...
