American Santoro

.
I am so proud of Rodrigo Santoro. Proud papa! Unlike another gorgeous actor of foreign stock who shall not be named but whose name might rhyme with Ga'Hoole Sofa, Rodrigo has stuck it out here on American screens even when the roles have been less than (cough Lost cough). He's a huge star back in Brazil - when I first heard of him he was described as "the Tom Cruise of Brazil," for whatever that's worth. He still works back there (he was very good in the soccer bio-pic Heleno last year - but most of his roles seem to be here now, and he's doing pretty good! He's got the 300 sequel coming out in March (actually I had no idea it was that long until it's released - why the heck am I seeing so many ads for it right now?), which is foregrounding his familiar golden-bikini'd presence; he remained one of the constants in the fluctuating sea of cast-members for Natalie Portman's troubled neo-Western Jane Got a Gun; and now comes word that he's going to play the bad guy up against Will Smith in Focus, the new heist thriller from the directors of Crazy Stupid Love and I Love You Phillip Morris. Santoro already worked with them in the latter film, of course...

... yeah that was nice. Anyway Focus involves Smith planning an elaborate heist which gets bungled up by the presence of his ex-girlfriend, who's also a con - reading between the lines it sounds as if Rodrigo's the man she wants and the man Smith's robbing. It all kind of sounds a little bit like Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, to me. Which is great! I love Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. let's hope this movie had half DRS's humor. Before I figured out who the directors were I thought this was a straightforward heist thriller thing but they give me hopeit will have some humor to it. In summation, I hope this is Rodrigo's costume:

He's OURS now, anon! More specifically, mine. ALL MINE. ;)

What of his work from back home should I try and see? Anything you recommend?

Have you seen Walter Salles' Behind the Sun? Great film with a nice turn from Rodrigo. He is also amazing and very different in Brainstorm.
