The Time Of Salt

.

I've been waiting a very very long time to hear this news and it's brightened my morning considerably - Cate Blanchett and Mia Wasikowska are set to star in Carol, an adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's 50s-set lesbian melodrama The Price of Salt, for director John Crowley, who made the wonderful film Boy A (which gave Andrew Garfield his worthy career).

It was waaaay back in April of 2006 (god I've been blogging a long time) that we last blogged about the book, which is about the doomed love affair between a young girl new to the big city and an older woman going through a messy divorce. At that time I said that Cate Blanchett would be perfect for the role of the older woman Carol - I am obviously psychic. It just takes six years for my premonitions to come true. Honestly though reading the book it's obvious that there is no one else who could ever play the part - Cate Blanchett was born for the role.

I pictured Natalie Portman in the role of the younger woman Therese - obviously I cannot be faulted since Mia Wasikowska was practically still womb-fruit six years ago, right? But Mia will be a wonderful choice for the part. And who doesn't want to see these two lovely ladies going at it? The Price of Salt broke my heart though (calling it "a female Brokeback" isn't too far off the mark) so I don't think we should be expecting too much Black Swan style heavy petting.

Director Crowley is finishing up a thriller with Eric Bana and Rebecca Hall right now (previously mentioned here) and hopes to film Carol early next year here in New York.

OOOH! Sounds hot ... erm, I mean, thought provoking.

I saw Mia in a movie in Australia in 2007, and it's been one of my favorite things to see her rise.
