Happy 150, Georges Méliès

.

How wonderful that cinema's original magician, born 150 years ago today, is getting some new attention thanks to Martin Scorsese's Hugo, huh? The reenactments of his stuff in 3D were my favorite part of the movie. Hopefully it'll inspire lots of kids to go back and watch his films, which are still a delight today. I'm sure that was Marty's noble intention. What's your favorite Méliès film? I know it's a cliche but I always have to go back to "A Trip To The Moon."

I wasn't very familiar with Méliès before I saw Hugo, and I hate to be a party-pooper, but I found Hugo's repeated use of that image of the moonface's oozing eye sort of grotesque and off-putting.

Meliese not only invented special effects, he was the first person to use film to tell a narrative story, basically inventing cinema as we know it. Cineasts world-wide owe him a debt of gratitude.
