Good Morning, World

.

A happy 37th birthday to Leo today. I never saw Blood Diamond, which those shots above are from, and I don't know that I ever will. All that screaming about diamonds and blood, no thank you. J. Edgar is out in some theaters now, and the reactions seem to be exactly what you'd expect from everybody - the Eastwood admirers admire it and the non-admirers do not. I was just glancing through Clint's filmography and realized that I haven't bothered to one of his movies since Million Dollar Baby! Isn't that crazy? I suppose that streak will break now, due to the dashing twelve feet of Armie Hammer.

Oh wait I'm supposed to be talking about Leo, aren't I? Hmm. I run drastically hot and cold with him. Most recently I liked him in Revolutionary Road (a film I feel like I hold in higher esteem here in the now than most people do) and I thought he was fantastic in The Departed. My favorite performance from him might be Catch Me If You Can, weirdly. Whenever that movie's on TV, which is often, I get sucked right in. And in the distant past there are lots of things to love - Titanic, Romeo + Juliet, What's Eating Gilbert Grape. But he's not an actor I can get obsessed about. What's y'all's opinion on Leo?

not the greatest fan of leo, but i consider him a fine actor from time to time. i liked him as you did, JA, in revolutionary road (as well as the movie), but couldn't stand him in shutter island. in general i hated the movie, but leo was particulary bad (the accent? horrible), probably the weakest link. and yes, he was such a darling in romeo+juliet with claire (adore every single part of that movie) and he was great in catch me if you can, agreed.

I think he is capable of greatness, and thank you for reminding me of Catch Me If You Can because that might be the last time he played someone with a sense of humor and fun. He needs a new challenge, a comedy or a completely insane character in an indie film or just something other than working for Scorsese.

My opinion is similar to yours. I really like him since I first saw him in Gibert Grape, but I don't necessarily buy a ticket to see a movie just because he's in it. So I guess my love isn't unconditional.

I think being crowned as generation best in Titanic harmed the way he'd choose his projects from that moment onwards, as if he felt he needed to live up to the expectations. I like some his performances better than others, but what's always there imo, it's the pressure, the burden of the responsibility. I don't find the freedom and enjoyment I find in Gilbert Grape or in the parts of Titanic I've seen.

I've tried to see Catch Me if You Can every time it's on TV, but I always end up doing something else.

Does he make too many Oscar baity movies? Probably, or oscar baity projects are offered to him because he can pull them off. The way to end with it it's simple, give him the Oscar. I'm sure he won't be as terrible as Mrs. Bullock.

Ugh. I think that he looks the same in every movie. You know the look, where his brow is always furled?

Tara somebody said he looks like "a fat evil baby" the other day and I can't get it out of my head. He'd make a great Stewie Griffin.

My God... I was obsessed with him in the late 90ies. I loved Romeo and Juliet and collected everything.

But that was more like a teenage crush. As an actor I like him in several movies. He's really talented.
Hm.
37... can't really believe it... 13 years ago... whow

I am a ridiculous Leo fanboy and have been since Basketball Diaries, I guess. I do wish he would switch things up a little more in terms of role/film selection, but within his niche he does consistently outstanding work, and he's still just about the hottest thing on the planet (and never more gorgeous than in The Beach, so thanks for that last shot).
