Everything You Ever Need To Know About Life...

... you can learn from:

Joan Wilder: Why won't you take the elevator?
Mrs. Irwin: Oh pumpkin', I never get into an elevator alone.
You know... rapists.

I suppose it's the fact that I grew up in love with this movie and watching it over and over and over again and therefore it occupies a really fundamental space of Who I Am, but I think of this scene with Mrs. Irwin all the time. I can summon up an exact copy of the way the actress Eve Smith who plays her says every single one of her lines, and have been known on occasion when the moment's right to use her "I jus' keep hopin' for you, pumpkin." When the moment's right, of course. Which is surprisingly often!

Smith didn't really start acting until the 1980s, but she managed to rack up over thirty credits over the decade playing little old ladies, on stuff like Mr. Belvedere and The A-Team and Night Court and Growing Pains and 227 and The Facts of Life and on and on with every 80s staple you can think of.

Thank you thank you thank you for giving this movie some attention! I watched it all the time as a kid. Sometimes I think to myself in Michael's voice, of course, "Joan Wilder...hey!"

Random, I know.
