Oh-Eleven's Possibly Oscarriffic Offerings

.
I know I just yesterday compared the Oscars to generic macaroni (note to self: "Generic Macaroni" should be the title of my auto-biography). And this is usually the sort of thing I'd just link to in an I Am Link post, but I just did an enormous one of those this morning. So let's just devote an entire post to this, a link on over to The Playlist where they're trying their hand at guessing what might fill up the ten Best Picture slots at next year's Oscars, because I found it a fascinating read that got me pretty stoked for what we might see by the end of the year. And what the hell, so this isn't entirely pointless, here are five off-the-top-of-my-head moments from their article that grabbed my interest.

1- Two films by Spielberg! Yes it was lame that they had him announce Best Picture for the fiftieth time at the Oscars, but seeing him reminded me that I have a deep-seeded nostalgia for the man and his movies, and a year where he releases both a potential blockbuster (Tintin) and a Very Serious Effort (War Horse) will always remind me of 1993 when he released Jurassic Park & Schindler's List, and that's a reminder I enjoy having. (Of course it could turn out more The Lost World & Amistad).

2- I couldn't be more excited about We Need To Talk About Kevin if it were sitting on my face. I kept imagining Tilda swanning by in her velvet garbage bag during the awards the other night and it made me smile.

3- I rewatched Citizen Ruth the other night so my affection for Alexander Payne's been made strong anew - you have to bolster it every so often since it's been ages since his last film - and I hope hope hope that The Descendants is as great as all his previous films have been.

4- Could it really be Terrence Malick's year? I think it might be hoping a little much from the Academy. I mean, who knows if The Tree of Life is even any good (although I am one of the easy sots who swooned at the beyond-gorgeous trailer), but his movies just aren't exciting enough for them. Because The King's Speech was filled with killer robots, you might recall.

5- Same goes with David Cronenberg. But oh, imagine!

And will this be the year that Michael Fassbender gets his first nomination? He has approximately seventeen movies coming out - the first of which, Jane Eyre, is getting good reviews already - so I'd hazard a guess that it could happen...

Great choices! Definitely all will be on my radar...can't wait for the Tree of Life and the Cronenberg movie! Also, One Day with the director of An Education...Lars von Trier! Soderberg! Finnes! Meek's Cutoff! Almodovar! Love the book We need to talk about Kevin, hope the movie will be as good!

However, I am not crazy about Tintin because of the terrible and freaky stop-motion capture animation (?)
