As I made clear with this week's daily obnoxiousness, I was mightily looking forward to Mark Romanek's Never Let Me Go opening here in NYC yesterday, and went to the first screening I could make it to after work last night. The show was unsurprisingly sold out, but we got there early enough to get good seats in the center. Everything was going great! And then...
And then! What to my wandering eyes should appear but a certain skinny blond woman walking to the front of the theater. My eyes caught her as she attempted to get our attention. The words, hesitantly produced, "Is... that..." fell from my lips but before I could finish the thought she was talking and yes, it was indeed.
She cleared her throat, said hello, and told us she usually likes to go to the opening night of her movies. That she was incredibly proud of this film. And that she hoped we enjoyed it. And poof, she was gone. Goddamn y'all!
So that was nice. If nice means totally awesome. If only that happened with every movie, ya know? I want the stars to wish me an enjoyable time at their movie before every screening I go to from now on. I will not settle for any less ever again!
Unfortunately it went from the highest high to the lowest low because the sound ended up being mucked up for the entire run-time of the movie. If we weren't having to lean forward in our seats to hear what the characters were saying, it was crackling, spiking up and down volume-wise. It was terrible and distracting and I don't know that I can review the movie until I see it a second time. I want to say that I loved it, that everybody in it was wonderful and the film was gorgeously shot and a haunting portrait of extended grief, the sad acceptance of one's sad fate, and the dreams of what could've been, all the things it needed and I wanted it to be, but all that's going to have to wait until I can slip myself into its sad frail landscape a little more peacefully. I got a refund on my ticket and plan on seeing the movie again this weekend, so stay tuned for more next week I suppose. But as long as you find a theater where the sound's working, it should be a mighty big recommendation from me.

Carey Mulligan was standing in front of us.

Oh dear! What theater? Have tickets to see it tonight at Sunshine Cinemas. Now if only Carey would show up again...
It was Sunshine. They know about the problem now, we weren't the only people complaining at the end, so I'd guess they'll have it fixed by now. One would hope!
JJ has word that she's introducing a couple more shows over the next two nights...
Saw the 10:30pm screening at the Sunshine and the sound cut in and out straight through the film. It was agonizing, as I'd been really looking forward to seeing this film. Regardless, I liked it a great deal and today, every time I think about it, I get choked up. More than anything, I was surprised by how smart the picture is.
Gah. She's awesome. She's just so fucking cool.
I am so jealous. I might have died if that had happened to me. can't wait to see this movie!
So did you see it with good sound yet? I'd like to hear what you thought. I saw it at TIFF on Sept 13 and pretty much loved it.
I did finally see it right, trendaway. Here's my review. LOVE. I rambled a bit.
