Gawrsh...

.
... I certainly picked a good year to pay so little attention to the movie awards, didn't I?

Also, haha hahaha haha ha! The Blind Side! Best Picture nominee! Screenwriters for Lifetime movies everywhere, take heart.

Still there are some good ones sprinkled in there amongst the ruins. What's your favorite and least favorite nomination this morning, yo? I like that Cinematography nomination for The White Ribbon.

Favorite: Either Jeremy Renner or District 9

Least Favorite: Since it's hardly worth getting mad about Avatar, and The Blind Side goes without saying...I can't say. I wish Melanie Laurent had been recognized, though.

Your girl Penny stole a nomination from your other girl Samantha Morton. Not sure how you're supposed to feel about that.

Well I haven't seen Samantha Morton's performance yet so I can refrain from righteous indignation for now. But I thought Penny was good in Nine - her delivery of "With my legs open." is classic. She and Marion were both terrific in it and I woulda been fine with either of them getting nominations. It was just Rob "Hack" Marshall messing up everything around them that annoyed me so much.

I watched the noms on NBC this morning and jeremy Renner was in The Today Show's studio and they cut to him when his name was announced and he was all excited and I actually teared up, a lil'. I am so lame. But yay Renner! It's hardly my favorite performance of his but he's always so good, he deserves it.

Same goes for District 9. I liked it a lot, didn't so much love it, but I was totally psyched to see it get the nomination. although does this mean it and Avatar will split the sci-fi vote and Hurt Locker might win?

I have no idea how that performance in "The Hurt Locker" didn't impress you more. I thought he was the best thing in a very good movie.

Also, good point about "District 9" maybe splitting the "Avatar" vote. I can dream, at least.

I'm just not in love with that movie. I certainly don't hate it, I think it's fantastic that an intelligent action film (directed by an awesome fucking woman) is getting so much love. Maybe I'll like it more when I watch it again. But something about it that I haven't been able to fully articulate has kept me from really falling for it, and as great as Renner is in it (I said it wasn't my favorite perf of his, not that I didn't think he was terrific) I think his character gets channeled through a couple of the script's weaker tendencies... I blame the movie around him more than I blame him, that is.

At first I thought this was going to be a thread about beloved Lifetime movies. (Better than the Oscar nominations, at least.)

But I do sorta love that Lee Daniels got nommed. I figured they'd sneak Clint or some comparable nonsense over an openly gay black man...

My favourite nomination was Alexandre Desplat for Fantastic Mr. Fox. I love his scores, even for bad films like Ben Button.

I really wish Where the Wild Things Are would have gotten SOMETHING. Same goes for Ponyo and Mary and Max. Oh well...

Favorite Nom: The White Ribbon for Cinematography

Least Favorite Nom: The Blind Side (both categories)

It's just sad, I like Sandra Bullock, really I do, but I cannot get behind this film. If only she had given a better performance in a much much better film. Oh, well.
