The King of Cartoons

.

Over at The New York Times they've got an article daring to ask if Pixar's Up might actually lose (gasp!) the Best Animated Film Oscar this year. This reminded me of the fact that out of the animated films I have seen this year I would actually place Up last. I did love the first 2/3rds or so but thought it sorta fell apart in the final act, and there are so many wonderful animated films this year... I think we can in part thank Pixar for this cartoon renaissance, as they've made solid storytelling the bedrock of all of their films, and their films have all been wild successes, proving such things - originality, heart, brains - can actually be popular. So thanks for that, and keep up the work, guys. But I'd totally be down with any of the other possible nominees beating their asses this year. So I ask y'all: what would you guys choose as the best animated film of the year?

If I forgot any, yell at me in the comments.

(related: previously we voted on Pixar's best film) And that picture at the top of this post will tell you my own personal preference by scanning the images clockwise (with Coraline, not pictured, probably tying Up, although I really have got to see that one again, I hardly remember it at this point).

Easily Coraline with The Princess & the Frog as a distant second.

For me Coraline edges Fox - but I haven't seen Mary & Max.

Mary and Max is far and away the best but has such a low rating because it hasn't been seen by many.

I'm def with you on this one, JD. Ponyo rocked my world.

I feel weird that I had such a tepid response to Coraline and it doesn't make any sense to me and I wanna see the film again because I think I'll like it much more on a second viewing. One problem I had the first time was the 3D gave me a headache; I think I'll like it better without that.

And I adored M&M too, anonymous, and think you could be onto something. I actually went a little back and forth between Ponyo and it for my fave, and on another day, who knows. It's a wonderful delightful moving little thing.

Ponyo is great but looses steam at the end. Mary and Max stays golden all throughout. Both are great but I give M&M the edge.

I voted for "Mary and Max" despite preferring "Fantastic Mr Fox". I felt it needed my vote!

I loooove "Mr Fox", legitimately the most pleasant surprise 2009 in film. Loved it. I'll be incredibly happy if Up loses the Oscar. I'll be disappointed if it gets a Best Picture nomination, too. I'd actually rank it as the weakest Pixar movie yet. Everyone loves the opening, but why was I meant to be crying over these people I only just met. Why did the old dude and the kid suddenly become friends once they landed at the Falls? etc etc. It's the first time I've ever had a non-ecstatic reaction to a Pixar film.
