Please Tell Me I'm Not The Only One...

.
... that's made absolutely crazy by the following statement (via):

"I was never really a fan of the official poster for Duncan Jones‘ sci-fi indie Moon. I actually think Sony missed a big opportunity to sell the movie based on cool retro sci-fi imagery or the marketable face and name of Sam Rockwell, instead deciding to go with a trippy psychedelic circle."

Ugh! Ugh! Ugh! Ugh! Notsomuch to the "cool retro sci-fi imagery" part because I can imagine a poster that looked like the cover of an old, pulpy sci-fi paperback for Moon that could've been awesome and appropriate... but honestly even to that I would offer that the "trippy psychedelic circle" itself is actually a "cool retro sci-fi" image so that argument's void too, from where I stand.

But no, it's the second half of that second sentence, that they should've sold the film with "the marketable face and name of Sam Rockwell" that makes me want to set lots of things on fire. Yes, screw anything interesting or original for a poster's art-work - give us a giant Sam Rockwell head floating in space! And make sure his name is really big across his forehead. And hand everyone a sippy-cup and chew up their food for them, too. UGH.

And as a side-note, is Sam Rockwell that marketable a name or face in the first place? I mean, I love the dude, I think he's a great actor, but I can tell you straight up that my mother couldn't identify him out of a line-up and I usually equate her knowledge of such things with the general mainstream sort of recognition out there.

Anyway! Rant aside, the post at Slash/Film where this quote comes from has a purpose, and a good one at that, beyond making me go bonkers right at its start. They found four unused concept poster for Moon that have some nifty stuff about them. I share:

I think they made the right choice in the end but I do like the top right one with the golden version of the psychedelic moon in the background a lot too. But I dunno, Sam Rockwell's awfully small there! Ugh.

The letters on the bottom of the goldmoon-one are nicely (and retro) done.
But the one they went with looks great.

i love the poster they choose but i am glad that even the rejected ones were trying to be artful and not just floating head in space.
